The Saw movies are overrated. It's like the director wanted to make Se7en, but didn't have a good enough script, so he threw extra gore in instead.

Yeah, I didn't find those scary.  Just gory.  The same ilk as Hostel.  Not scary just excessively gory.  I was more grossed out by them than anything else.

wow, either you guys are callous, or you need to see a freaking psychologist or something.

the closest to a scary movie i'd ever been was doom, and the first resident evil. i don't really watch scary movies, real life's scary enough.

doom wasn't so bad compared to what some people say, it had a comic relief but even with my dad in the room i was scared crap-less.

resident evil though i was alone, i got about an hour into the movie or at least until the guy gets scanned with a laser. then i just said no, shut off the tv and went and played a game, probably animal crossing, until i forgot about it.

Tapewolf

Company of Wolves.  Not really a horror film.  Actually I find it very beautiful.  And I can't say that the wolf transformation effects have aged well.
Nonetheless, the scene near the start where Alice is run down in the forest by a whole manner of strange creatures still creeps me out.

the consensus seems to agree- and yet 'horror' movies today just seem to think the best way to attract an audience is to show every detail of someone with their hand in a blender.

and yet, when i speak to people in person most of them are 'wtf? ho cam yu sez saw am not scar3? it am much suspended!'

what the world needs is another hitchcock- he had special effects consisting of a stuffed bird on a stick and got fifty times the pantwetting of any of the new gore movies. thats what is called well done

yeah, lets classify those as 'gore' not 'horror'

I don't think the two Johns are the same. John Doe kills people for symbolism. Jigsaw gives them a chance; he's only ever killed one person himself.

That being said, I like the Saw movies. Quite twisty, and able to keep making sequels without getting too boring and overplayed. Seven may be the more brilliant movie (I'll admit that), but Saw has its place among the really good horror movies of the past ten years.

Yes, as an example of the fact that people will still flock to a horror movie, even if it doesn't have a great script, so long as it's released around Halloween.

It's not a horror movie but Short Circuit 2 was on last night and my family sans me watched it. Nevermind it's old, or how it might be a bad sequel, the scene where the villains mercilessly beat down a pitifully begging Johnny Five is more traumatising than most horror films to a kid - and I can't watch it today. Just -hearing- the soundeffects from the kitchen made me feel ill.

by this value judgment i have to say 'a Christmas story' is the same for me.

i absolutely loathe the fact that theres at least two or three channels that play it non stop for a full week at Christmas.... ugh...

While I'm not into horror movies per say, there are a scant few that were really enjoyable to me. First of which was the very original "House on Haunted Hill" Sure its old now and the affects aren't what they are now but that movie, honest to goodness, freaked me the heck out with what little effects it used. Another one, more recent, was Silent Hill (maybe I just like hill movies who knows) The story was engaging and at 21 years of age the film gave me nightmares. I suppose that's what horror films are intended to do I suppose.

Saw and Hostel are apart of the genre Gorno or Gorenography that's gotten popular lately. Torture porn. Whatever. It's like watching a snuff film without the actual snuff (hopefully). They tend to leave me with a distinct dirty feeling after watching them. Not scary, just really...ick.

I'd rather watch something that makes me feel genuinely afraid rather than something that makes me feel like I just watched someone get raped. =/

i thought Doom was a comedy?.. since, well.. doom 3 was scarier.

"Predator". That nearly-invisible nuclear-capable THINGY terrified me, and he still looks wonderful (in the first movie, the second was...bizarre).

Oh dear.

this is the whole point of a scary movie, you get an adrenaline high.

nausea and an adrenaline high, how can those be confused with each other?

Zina

It's not really nausea. I have a really strong stomach and can deal with gory movies.

It's more like I'm watching someone get beaten, tortured, and humiliated in the worst ways, both physically and emotionally, and I know that there's someone out there that's getting off to it.

Brunhidden

in a way its a lot like people who thought forest gump was a hilarious movie because it had a mentally retarded person in it....

While I thought that some aspects of the Saw movie were pretty creepy, the idea of someone getting off on it makes me feel ill. That's crazy.

Snuff films themselves are typically intended for people who find watching living things die arousing. Gorno is like watching a snuff film without the actual snuff, so yes. There are people out there who get off while watching Hostel and Saw.

Debate- was 'Gremlins' a horror or a comedy? i know gremlins 2 was a comedy, but gremlins 1 had some very scary parts, including use of gore in a way that is actually scary what with a gremlin in a blender.

then again i think horror/comedies may be better then romantic/comedies, probably because the market is flooded with bad romantic/comedies that arent funny and bad horror movies that arent scary

I'll nominate horror, because those little things were creepy. I also remember (to top the blender) one scene in what I think was the second movie (they're gremlins. it's not comedic damnit) where they push one into a paper shredder bit by bit. Gaaargh.

To me, that was more of a comedy even when I was a child.  It was so cheesy that I couldn't help but laugh.  I think if I were to base it on intent though, I'd have to say action/horror for sure.
