Face it, Jay - Dilandau was a competent pilot, but he was weak-willed and lacked self-control, and this was the reason why Van kicked his ass (though when Van was kicking Dilandau's ass he lacked any self-control whatsoever himself... ) - though Escaflowne definitely helped.
