DMFA: Apparently People Like It.

I came across a website ranking thing called Websiteoutlook.com, that estimates how much a website is worth based on traffic.  They are here: According to them, DMFA stats are:

Pageviews/day...12,470, Rank (out of ALL websites)...88,205th, Net Worth...$28,769.30 US

For comparison, some other comics:
Lackadaisy:       5,045                                            218,006th

Sabrina Online:  3,860                                           284,901st

Vinci and Arty:    1,236                                           889,836th

Jack:                  21,100                                           52,131st

Remember, those rankings are out of the more than 5,000,000,000 websites on the internet.  That means DMFA is more popular (traffic wise) than 99.9982% of the whole internet.  More stuff here: http://www.websiteoutlook.com/www.missmab.com

Another, not quite so scientific list is the Belfry Web Comic Index.  Belfry is a list of 5,737 webcomics - mostly anthropomorphic ones.  They run a subscription thing for webcomics.  Looking at their list of most read comics, http://belfrycomics.net/view/mostread, out of those 5,737, here are the top 15:

# 1 *Better Days ALV
# 2 *Jack ALNVX
# 3 *Peter is the Wolf ANVX
# 4 *Dan & Mab's Furry Adventures
# 5 *Kevin & Kell
# 6 *FreeFall
# 7 *Twokinds AN
# 8 *Furry Animal Magic ALNVX
# 9 *Sabrina Online A
# 10 *Danielle Vix ALNVX
# 11 *Wacintosh File... New! ALN
# 12 *Las Lindas ALN
# 13 *Girl Genius V
# 14 *Ménage à 3 ANX
# 15 *Sequential Art AL

Those letters are various content warnings, which DMFA doesn't require, of course.
A Adult Situations
L Adult Language
N Nudity
V Graphic Violence
X Explicit (NC-17)

Just thought I'd share.

It is difficult to trust any figures that you see on the web.  As they say, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.  The site says that it merges information from multiple sources, but doesn't say how they are combined or evaluated for accuracy.  I would actually view the belfry statistics as more reliable, at least for ranking sites, because it apparently uses a simpler algorithm with less fudge factors.

I also find it difficult to believe that there are 5 billion (5,000,000,000) web sites.  As I recall, the theoretical limit of IPv4 addresses is only around four billion, and only a fraction of those are actually in use, with only a fraction of those having web sites.  Even if the average host has 10 web sites, the number seems too large.  Five billion web pages might be possible.

However, entering "dan mab furry" on http://www.google.com indicates 10,800 results, and the blurbs on the entries are quite favorable.  Since the numbers on rankings seem to agree, this seems to lend support to their validity.

However, I believe that the most accurate and meaningful measurement of the comic strip is the response to the auction for a guest appearance.

Impressive.  Mine is worth less than a tenth of that by their metrics.

I have been wondering whether Abel's Story should be listed as a separate entity for that reason.

Still, this leads to an obvious conclusion -
If Amber wants DMFA to gain in popularity, and gain further money-making potential, she needs those letters.  Lets see some outbursts of profanity and adult situations,  or maybe nudity.  Explicit sex and graphic violence can be added later.  We know you can do it.  Once you get those letters you will rule the web-comic world!

I have to agree, it is rather hard to trust such websites.. They went by daily views? Well, Sabrina Online only updates monthly. And on the last and first of every month, its traffic rate goes haywire.

None the less, time to cash in yet, Mrs. Williams? ^^

AmigaDragon

Those popularity ratings need to take update schedules into account. Rather than a per day (week, month) reader count, take a per scheduled update count. If a comic updates monthly and the readers know that, you arent' going to have everyone checking for an update every day. So in that case you can take the whole month worth of views.

Websiteoutlook is just based on total traffic per day.  Obviously more updates equal more traffic.

Belfry though, is looking at how many people read each comic, not how often they go there, so it tells you a little better (perhaps) how many fans a comic has, regardless of the schedule.

Peter is the Wolf, for instance, only updates once a week, but is just ahead of DMFA.  If Amber added just a little werewolf porn, I'm sure she could overtake them.

I vote for this path to higher ratings..... >.> <.< Nah just kidding I'm a dirty old man but I'm not that dirty :P

I get a huge kick of DMFA which is is first comic I really started to follow, doing so well as a PG rated comic. More props to Amber I say!

Or Shanna, Anna and Hanna... Maybe a shot with all of the female cast.  Though all of these sound like an *awful* lot of work.  Especially considering all of the other things currently 'owed'.

Edit:  Added quote to what I was referencing for clarity sake.

I say good man, haven't I seen you somewhere before? I never miss a face..

Amber is currently under enough stress.  We don't want to encourage things that will result in more situations like this one.  Amber should follow Shakespeare's advice: "To thine own self be true."  Although one fervently hopes that Amber won't encounter a situation like the one in that play.

Regardless of whether we get any DMFA smut... apparently people are already looking for it. >_>

One of my satellite pages gives me statistics on the search keywords folks use, and lately I've been seeing more than a few from folks apparently hunting for the stuff.

Oh, and I think the site is a little suspect at best. According to it I get almost as many pageviews as Vinci and Arty does.

Paladin Sheppard

DMFA porn, or Last Resort porn?  Or both?

Interestingly, I've had people come to mine searching for Last Resort.  No porn searches yet, though.

Keyword yet, and it should stay that way really. But just because those people haven't found any doesn't mean there isn't any. Mostly because of rule 34 I suppose, but I myself have found DMFA porn on a site I favor, I'd tell the name but I would likely get in uber trouble. Not much really but it is there. Specifically 7 pics, But I shall say no more.

I didn't say it didn't exist. I said I was having trouble finding it.

I know if you want it done right you have to do it yourself, but what's the fun in that?

Just to be semi-serious for a bit, I really, really like DMFA the way it is, and trust Amber's judgment and talent to keep it that way.  It's high-quality work, and it shows how popular and respected you can be, even without purient content.  (But I'm sure any porn would also be respected as well.)

And assuming things stay as they are,  I will defend DMFA, even against porn-wielding Zombie-Mab armies.

I get the feeling that those stats were rigged somehow.

I'll get to the bottom of this if it somehow kills me.

I'm still rather shocked that Better Days is #1.  Everything I've heard about it is that it's utter Randroid crap.

Would you like a googolplex (gzipped 57 times)?

Ghostwish

Dunno.. read the series myself, I do, and it seems okay. But, then again, in my opinion? ALL polls are rigged. It's a political contagion, I tells you.

It has good art. Subpar storyline imo.

I also heard the creator is a total egomaniac as well as a fullfledged jerk. Just what I heard though.

Obscurity is that which keeps the double edged rule at bay. That's why I wouldn't put artwork of the characters I've created on the net even if I could draw. As all should know , absence is the greatest form of obscurity.
