I cried when the Companion Cube died.

Though earth and man are gone,
I thought the cube would last forever.
I was wrong.

I invited your friend, the Companion Cube, but he couldn't come...

Because you MURDERED him.

Guilt trip, much? :B

Think the activation engine will work in WINE?

According to splitpaw (search for "Team Fortress 2 Wine" on youtube - I just closed the window) TF2 works on wine. He also says "just like HalfLife 1 and 2" - I -think- he said Portal as well, but it's the same engine for all, he said.

So.. quite possibly.

Yeah, all of the games are running on the same engine.  If you open up the task manager and go to processes, it will list Team Fortress 2 and/or Portal as HL2.

Agreed, It's sad how people will porn something as unsexual as portal just for the sake of it. I've already seen Portal Porn by that Douche darkneko0gami...

As long as nobody makes porn of the cute little turrets I think I'm going to be just fine.

On-topic, I haven't played Portal, but I have been interested in it after hearing everyone rave about what a great game it is. I'm not really good at first-person perspective games, but this game just seems so inventive that I want to give it a try.

Besides, Glados is really really awesome.

I've actually heard quite a few people compare GLados to Shodan... the AI from System Shock 2. Sure theres the obvious rampant AI comparison. But they're still different in their own special ways rite?

I ran through the Developer's Commentary last night for S's & G's... and I learned something.  It seems that the author of the song is none other than Jonathan Coulton who also wrote the song "Code Monkey".

Also, it seems that they have a hard time getting their playtesters to look up in certain areas.  I find this odd, because in this generation of players who do the deathmatch thing, there are tons of maps that will put you in an almost literal "death from above" situation... and so looking up should be instinctual, shouldn't it?  I guess that's how the developers were thinking too.

I like hearing the developer's commentary and hearing about how certain areas were set up originally and how they retooled them.

Did you know that you can't get achievements while listening to the commentary?  I was trying to get the Camera Shy achievement during the commentary, and halfway through I went to check it and even though I had taken down a whole bunch of cameras, the counter was still sitting at 0.  Go figure.

Then type DIR to see that there are two executables.  Run NOTES first to get a "history" of Aperture Science, and then APPLY to apply to be a test subject.

At the end of the application where it asks you to type in your 64 digit code, instead type THECAKEISALIE to get a little bonus screen.

it's odd I can't seem to get Portal to run on my computer

Since halflife 2 runs fine I figured I could play portal but it won't even load.  hell I don't even get an error

Dannysaysnoo

Has your computer changed since you played Half Life Two?

rt

Hare, if you are on an older computer you may be out of luck, I checked for my system which did run HL2, but portal seemed out speck. Hopefully I have the minimum suggested requirements here:

HL2:
1.2 GHz Processor , 256 MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows, 2000/XP/Me/98, Hard Drive: 4.5 GB, Internet Connection, DVD-ROM Drive

Portal
1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 8 level Graphics Card, Windows Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Portal uses the same engine, but it's a far more resource-consuming trial for your computer to run.  Same with the Half life 2: Episodes 1 and 2, as well as Team Fortress 2.  All of them are much more of a strain than Half life 2.

There's a lot of 2s in the orange box...

yes but I'd still expect some sort of error message.

though this might explin while it ran ep 1 seemed a little more prone to lagging then half life 2.  I hope I can run Ep 2

Azraelle

Episode 1 is when they first introduced HDR lighting effects, which will kill just about any video card pre-2006.  My ATi 9600 Pro ran HL2 at about 20 fps, but Lost Coast and Ep1 around 3 fps until I disabled the feature.  Ep 2, TF2 and Portal not only use HDR, they also have motion blur effects which will drive another nail into the coffin.  Ep 2 also casts dynamic soft shadows from the HEV flashlight.

Bottom line - you need a beefy video card for these games.  I'd recommend an NVIDIA 8800 series, or whatever the ATi equivalent is.

Fuyudenki

20 FPS?  Did you consider scaling back on texture detail and screen resolution?  My 9600 SE runs Episode 1 perfectly fine, until random bugs cause it to crash like a one-winged airplane.

I suspect the sector on my hard drive where my Steam games are stored is damaged.

llearch n'n'daCorna

screen resolution is important. If you don't have as much screen resolution as you can, you miss things.

Of course, that has concomitant issues with making sure you have enough video hardware to keep up with the game as well... *shrug* As with all things, it's a balance of issues.

granted.  There was that one-pixel enemy I headshot for a win in Acid Arena Turbo once, but honestly, I prefer refresh rate to pixel count.
