I'm making a note here; Huge Success!
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction
Aperture Science.
We do what we must becasue we can

For the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead
For there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
Then the science gets done, and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because.
I was so happy for you.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line.
And we're out of beta, we're releasing on time.
So I'm glad I got burned, think of all the things we learned.
For the people who are still alive.

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I'd prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa.
That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance.
Anyway, this cake is great,It's so delicious and moist.

Look at me still talking when there's science to do.
When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you.
I've experiments to run, there is research to be done.
On the people who are still alive.
And believe me I am still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm still alive.
I feel fantastic and I'm still alive.
While you're dying I'll be still alive.
And when you're dead I will be still alive.
Still alive.
Still alive.

Click here, as well as Here, if you have no idea what these lyrics are about, and don't mind having the final encounter, as well as the credits (and the ending song) spoiled for you.

The last level was crap.

The rest was great, though.

What?!  You're quite mad, Bill.  The final part of the game, where you get to explore the inner workings of the ESF and learn about the place and it's connection to the Half-Life storyline, is easily much cooler than the rest of the game.

bill

I was expecting some amazing super-tough uber-puzzle. The last part, though cool, was easy compared to the levels that preceded it.

There was very little in the game that could be considered genuinely hard.  I'm generally terrible at puzzle-type  games, yet I only needed assistance with one room in the entire game.

bill

I didn't realize until consulting the guide that you needed to grab the portal gun in the third room.  :<

I haven't played the real game...

but I have played this

Portal is nothing short of pure genius.  Perhaps the most innovative game to come down the pipe in years.  I love it.

And I went and bought cake because of it.

But the cake is a lie! :<

Also, don't abuse the Biting Pear of Salamanca (no, really, that's the original's name, it was made by ursulav on deviantart) with your foolish image macros! :P

BEST.  THREE.  HOURS.   EVER.

For such a short game, they managed to pack an insane amount of win into it.

I don't think anymore needs to be said than that.

I'm gonna start on the advanced maps tonight.  The mapping community needs to pounce on this one, seriously.

I've yet to see an explanation of precisely what Portal is, how you get it, what the requirements are etc... anyone got a good summary?

No it won't, because it apparently requires attaching a Win32 machine to the internet.  Well, I guess that saves me some money  >:3

You know, you can play it offline.  The only thing it does online is record how much time you've spent playing it and it downloads updates automatically.

What about product activation?  Can that be done offline via a challenge/response key?

No. However, despite Windows not being very secure (lol), I doubt anything bad will happen in the 2 minutes it takes to verify your key.

llearch n'n'daCorna

Or, you oculd play the flash version, which is here:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404612

Note that it's about 7Mb in size.

Hey I'd already posted that

You stole my link you box

Azraelle

Blah, the flash version sucks; too clunky and relies on too many split-second timing puzzles.

The only way to get Portal stand-alone is buying through Steam; the only way to buy it offline is to get the Orange Box.  But the OB is lots of fun too.

Ryudo Lee

Level 32 of the flash version is a pain in my backside...

Think the activation engine will work in WINE?

I was wrong.
