You should use a simple php script and have the avatars rotate.

:< Tried.. and failed. Now I have a folder I can't delete.

We can set you up a sig folder on ICVD if you'd like. PHP works fine there. ;)

That'd be awesome if it's okay :3 Though I have about 800 avatars I've created in my folder... it'll be hard to pick out which ones to use >_>

RJ

That's like 25+ mb of avatars.

xHaZxMaTx

Oh, it can't be that much.  After all, all the avatar's I've seen are only 100x100 pixels, which is probably 20Kb at most.

(20(800))/1024 = 3/4Mb

...either I can't operate my calculator anymore (at 2am, this is quite possible), or you are mistaken...
(20*800)/1024 = 16000/1024 = 15.6 MB
And if we take RJ's current avatar (29kb) as a guideline, we end up at 22.6MB

And although I don't think that 20 MB or so will kill Darkmoon's server, it may be a good idea to limit the selection a bit :animesweat

Whoops, forgot a zero. :confused  Still, 20-30Kb for a 100x100 image is pretty big.  On another forum I go to, the max file size for a sig (550x120 pixels) is 50Kb.

Quite a few would be more around the 30kb area.

Meh, most of them are bases anyway, and some are most pretty than funny.

*shrug* slightly more intelligent would be use the current hosting to provide the images, and use the php on Darkmoon's server to select a random one on the fly.

heck, -I- could do that with my server. It might take a little setting up, but it could be done... and I'm only on the end of a DSL...

You could do that if you prefer, but it doesn't bother me either which way. My server is not going to die from 25 MB of pictures. I barely touch the 250GB of band I get every month, and my site is super-popular.

I wasn't offering, I was merely suggesting, since I already have the setup for it, I could set it up with little effort.

Of course, my version is in perl in cgi, rather than in php, but the basic concept is pretty stable....

The other thing to consider is that, by having a smaller number of rotating avatars, people can associate them with you, as opposed to never seeing your posts with the same avatar twice.

It's all part of brand identity.

Would you like a googolplex (gzipped 57 times)?

:animesweat Good point... I think I'll stick to whichever one I like this week :3

Me too! :3

Though I can't pick the latest bunch of quotes. Though they sound a lot like something Jack Sparrow would say.

Pirates of Pinzance (sp?), I believe.

Ah, Penzance. It's Light Opera - Gilbert and Sullivan.

Interestingly, Penzance (a small town out on the west coast of the lower tip of the UK) was chosen because it was a haven of respectability and common sense - apparently at the time the opera was written, it had recently come up in a survey as the most law-abiding place in the UK, or something of that sort. Which makes the idea of a bunch of pirates there even more laughable... :-)

(fangirl squees) PIRATES OF PENZANCE!!!!!
(singing) Oh, it is, it is, a GLORIOUS thing, to be a Pirate King!

GOD, that play was awesome! Except the version I saw was different from the classic version... I saw it at the Goodspeed (with Andrew Varela as the Pirate King).

It rocked nonetheless.

It is HURRAH for the pirate king, HURRAH for the PIRATE KING.

This brings back memories. Of the "I was just in that last year" variety. In the pirate chorus. Fun.
Jeez I need to update this thing.

RJ

I remember watching the play on tv last year. The Pirate King was Jack Sparrow.

Man, Darkmoon would totally get me to watch it if Johnny Depp was in it.

Although... I'll really watch anything with him in it, so that's not saying much.

The actor wasn't Johnny Depp, but the Pirate King character was Jack Sparrow. I think it was some gimmick, but the guy was really, really good at it.
