I enjoyed the Thief series, especially Deadly Shadows.  They have a lot to live up to, at least for me.

personally, i'd like to see a more industrial revolution/steampunk approach if they're gonna diverge away from the medieval theme..

How do you mean?  That's basically what they did in the first two, wasn't it?  (Never saw the third game)

Eidos-Montreal is owned by Ubisoft these days, so it's going to be weird no doubt. I didn't like the sound of the things they were doing with Deus Ex 3, which was basically to turn it into another bland console shooter (a la Invisible War) and I'm not sure I'll be looking forward to this either. I know there's a good chance that a lot of the people who worked on the original Thiefs' will be working on this, but that doesn't mean much in the world where games are developed today.

I'd also be really disappointed if they followed Thief up with a modernized remake. As cool as it would be to play a 'modern' thief, I think that would be a real blow to the atmosphere, which was always Thief's main component.

The third was all about prophecy and the power of the runes, and by its end the runes were gone, the supernatural creature using their power destroyed, and Garrett the "One True Keeper" for setting it all off - very supernatural themes, that one (oh god the Cradle). Then he disappeared into the night with a little girl who saw him, ala the opening of the first game ("You have talent. Not everybody can see a Keeper...")

It would be interesting to have the game played with the girl as the main char with Garret around as her teacher.  Starting out as an aprentice theif the first mission in the game could involve Garret taking her on an actual robbery. As the in game tutoriel.

An open layout like deadly shadows would be cool but with a larger city, more factions, and a less touchy crime system.

I agree with you tgh, I think a sequel based directly off the third game, in which the girl Garrett catches becomes his apprentice and the game revolves around her. They've pretty much closed out the storyline with Garrett himself afterall.
