I just read the rules

I can't say a word that had become so stream-lined into my daily language that I didn't know it was vulgar.   :mowdizzy

Anyway, I see this is the thread where I put up things like hi, I'm called Axis and explain how I came to find the sight.  I had an entire post drafted out in my mind then I felt like that was a little too awkward for me.  I've been keeping up with the comic for about  half(maybe a quarter?  I can't remember the day I began reading.) a year now and just recently decided to join the forums.  (Tonight actually.)  So, hello hello all.

Darkmoon

You know, bitching about the rules is probably the single DUMBEST way to start your life on these forums.

Axis

Well, I could have not read the rules.  =)

Darkmoon

Well, if you had read the rules completely, you would have seen this one:

Rule #12
Finally, if you don't like the forum and feel the need to post your dislike, don't.

Through no major leap of logic, that would include bitching about the rules.

As for the word, whatever it may be, that you feel you need to be able to use, I'm sure you'll find plenty of ways to express yourself without derogatory slang.

I never posted my dislike, only stating a fact.  If I posted my dislike it would be more along the lines of, "Dang, I can't say a word that I use rather often."  The little smiley was added for humor.  If I didn't think this was that teasing that was mentioned, I would be somewhat insulted.

Darkmoon

You apparently need to be insulted, then. This was me clearly saying you are acting like a tool in your very first post.

Saying "I can't say a word that had become so stream-lined into my daily language that I didn't know it was vulgar," with or without a smiley, is grousing, plain and simple. As one of the moderation staff (which is also listed in those rules you were supposedly well versed in), my comment was a simple, mild warning that maybe you should find something else to talk about besides things you aren't allowed to do on this forums.

I must have not seen it between the cursing and calling me names.  Why do you keep calling me names?  What have I done to merit getting insulted instead of a simple, "Please, don't complain about the rules."?    It's simpler, gets the message across, and doesn't leave bad feelings.

Damaris

1) He hasn't been cursing at you.

2) While he might have called you names, saying that you regularly use hate language- which is what we limit to make all people on this forum feel comfortable- wasn't a testament to your IQ or your common sense.

To be frank, if you have assimilated derogatory terms into your life so much that you've forgotten that they are vulgar, insulting, hurtful, and inflamatory, then you need to sign off the internet and go read a book.  Reportedly they're good for the vocabulary.

This has been a public service announcement from your local library staff member.

I never said anything I said was a slur, just vulgar.

Netrogo

It didn't seem to me like he was complaining, just pointing out something he learned in the rules of sorts. I didn't know D that is followed by an AM and an N was considered vulgar until I used it in a PG sim on SL and got reemed out for it.

All of the bad words listed in the rules are slurs. I don't know what rules you read that dictate otherwise, but they certainly aren't the rules for CMF.

Netrogo: It's not your job to police the admins. If we want your opinion on whether someone is out of line or not, we'll promote you to admin level.

Well, I was actually referring to the third rule that discouraged the use swear words in titles and listed one which I used commonly.  Netrogo wasn't policing anyone, he was stating his opinion and an anecdote.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound like these rules are so very important to me.  I just felt I had to point out which rule I was referring to instead of being thought of as prejudice.

Darkmoon

Yes. In thread titles. Is it that difficult to control yourself and your language that you have to cuss in EVERY opportunity?

:rolleyes

And yes, he was policing. As were you.

Just follow the rules, play nice, and try not to get on my bad side. You'll be just fine here.

Oh, and watch out for llearch.

It was more of a moment of discovery for myself that I felt I had to share with the community.  I'm sorry you feel that I'm policing.  I feel that I'm being bullied.

Well, it's good practice for when you become a real grownup.  Because most grownups who want a good paying desk job have to learn how to not swear.  I don't know about blue collar jobs, as I've never had one, but I hazard that some of them are the same way.

Also, thank you for sharing your feelings.  You may lodge a complaint to the admins via PM if you like.  They will all be happy to discuss it.

I didn't mean to come off as policing I was just putting in my opinion of the matter as an outside party. I guess the word would be mediate, but it was more just trying to toss in another view point to go off of since the topic seemed to be getting a bit heated.

Anyways appologies for sticking my nose in, I'll just hole myself back up in the LLI section.

You'er fine, so long as you realize that admins police each other. No admin reacts to a situation without discussing it with everyone else.

You didn't know, which is fine. Don't feel like I was lashing out too harshly at you. When I'm being too harsh, trust me, you'll know.

Just to clarify, no permanent action is ever taken, which is why sometimes you'll see a thread locked pending discussion (so punishments can be meted out), and bans seem to take a little while- we try to have a few admins weigh in on things.

Some things, however, are done unilaterally, or with a minimum of discussion, for brevity and efficiencies sake, which is why forumers can always lodge a complaint via PM.  They do actually get discussed, sometimes at great length.

Other than that, here's some friendly advice from someone who isn't a moderator: let it go.  This `argument' is seriously boring.  Well, your half, anyway.  Quit while you're ahead, or at least not in last place.

Would you like a googolplex (gzipped 57 times)?

Damaris

Yeah, there's nothing like a good scrap to get the forum going.

This poor guy's just unlucky we're up this late.  We have tomorrow off, or he would have made it unscathed for a few hours.

Yeah. I'm bored, wired, and looking for a good bit of scuffle. It was either this, or internet porn to keep me awake.

Damn, if I was here, there would have been serious hell to pay, and ass to kick.

Either that, or I'd have ignored it.

I'm sure that's a comfort to all the other members, Bill.
