But then, so does everyone. Failing him, I'd be pointing my finger accusingly at RJ.

I'd much rather have the fame, hate and fear.  I have the hate in massive abundance, no fame yet, and a fair amount of fear.  I'm doing okay so far, but I'd like to trade in some of this hate for fame.

Well, Clue isn't important, either.  Fun, though.

(Once llearch put up there that he wasn't doing it, it became pretty obvious who it was.  That and I totally missed when he said ``...I told you she was here....''  I figured he meant Damaris, since she hadn't been mentioned.)

Ah, well.  I do hope that I've caused some mental anguish by making you imagine Patrick McGoohan naked.  I'd add ``It's a Man's Life Taking Your Clothes off in Public,'' but that might be over the top.

Feel free, Tiger (if you actually meant me... but without quotes saying otherwise, I'll just assume you meant my post just above yours - and why are the disclaimers often longer than the actual message, anyway?) :P

And Azlan... a quick and random Google search for "nyheter" points to Swedish. :erk

Lemme see if I can puzzle this one out with the help of the Phoenix Oracle Internet.
Vi - we
be om ursäkt - apologize
för - for/to/of/by/[some more]
felen - mistake/fault
inne - in/inside
om - of/about/by/round/about/again/...
nyheter - news
Den - he/she/it/the
här - here/host/army
ansvarig - responsible/answerable/liable
har - have
blitt - [not directly in an online dictionary, so it may be a conjugated verb. I guess it's the equivalent of "been"]
plundra - rob/loot/plunder

So in the end, I guess it's just the Swedish version of the English News: "We apologize for the fault in the news. Those responsible have been sacked."

And tsk tsk tsk. Silly Azlan! Rules are just for the non-Admins! :rolleyes

As I see it, the only exceptions admins have are those required to actually do the job.

eg, spamming or double posting in the course of duties, etc.

And, also as I see it, one can bend rules if one is amusing. This particular case, the translation was also posted, so it's kinda borderline. And it's funny, which gives it a little slack.

... I'll admit that I may have a strange sense of humour. :-)

Seriously, exploiting imaginary loophole in the rules about it being okay if the the translation is somewhere nearby (like in another News entry) wasn't exactly funny the first time (especially when people have to wade through a dictionary to realize that it's just a translation of another News message), but going the kiddy way of backwards text is just plain lame in my eyes.

If the Mods have so much free time on their hands, they should just spend that time to comment on some art in the Tower or something. I think it'd be more appreciated than coming up with new, "clever" ways of keeping the mortals "entertained".

Well, the language and translation for the first one should have been obvious.  I'm willing to travel to give people a personal screening of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkf2U9VlrkI) --so long as I don't wind up sitting next to a party from Rhyl who keep singing ``Torremolinos, torremolinos'' and complaining about the food...

The backwards stuff is a little over the top, though.  Can Caesar ciphers be far off?

Yes.

Backwards text, I can read without sitting down to think it over.

Ciphers require (not necessarily for me, but for some, at least) a little more effort.

But your point is noted, and I, at least, will stop here. Although I had stopped, after the backwards text, anyway.

Please, hardly anyone reads it anyway, much like people don't read signs in stores, whether they're important or not.  Why do you think we had three sticky threads reiterating what was in the news anyway?

And be honest, do you really want Darkmoon posting in the art threads?  This is probably a much better outlet.

Now, back on topic, please.  Otherwise, this thread will no longer be necessary, and you'll be stuck with the glitches that haven't been found yet.

Actually not.  The measure of the total amount of matter contained within an object (http://chandra.harvard.edu/resources/glossaryM.html) is mass, and what comes out of a nuclear blast has less mass than what goes in.

Since it's being converted into photons, it's no longer matter.  Only fermions and a few bosons have mass.  I could get into the proof that photons don't have mass, but it's rather boring.

... which is utterly irrelevant, since I didn't claim that the mass remained constant.

I claimed that the sum of the system (when accounting for energy = mass * c^2) was constant. Some of the m is turned into e, in various forms, but the sum total is constant.

And yes, much of that is photons, which have negligible mass, at best (it's still a bit uncertain, last I checked - theory states no mass, but that's still unconfirmed, when you get into extremely high energy states, etc)

In fact, stating that "the mass goes down" is pretty much exactly what I said.

Now, according to the theories, it's possible to take energy and turn it back into mass, somehow, but we haven't figured out how, yet. If we could, you could, theoretically, take a nuclear explosion and turn it into a, erm, unspecified mass of gold.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for such technology, though. :-)

You're winding me up on purpose, aren't you?

The matter is gone.  It's been converted into energy.  You can convert it back to matter again, but it's not matter just then.  And we do know how to do that.  For example, an electron can interact with a muon neutrino to form a muon and an electron neutrino.  There is more mass, and therefore more matter.

It's just that we don't know of any efficient way to do this synthetically.

Quote from: llearch n'n'daCorna on February 04, 2007, 08:02:27 AMAnd yes, much of that is photons, which have negligible mass, at best (it's still a bit uncertain, last I checked - theory states no mass, but that's still unconfirmed, when you get into extremely high energy states, etc)

Photons do not have mass.  We can prove this by looking at the equations for a photon's momentum.

p=h/λ (1)
p=γmv (2)
p=mv (3)

That second one should be a giveaway, since gamma is infinite at v=c.  But let's look at the non-relativistic version (3).  An observer moving away from the source of the photon sees a red shift, which changes the wavelength.  If the wavelength changes, then so does the momentum (1).  And since the momentum changes, but the velocity stays the same, the only thing left to change is the mass.  And mass cannot change like that.  There is such a concept as relativistic mass, but that is simply its invariant mass multiplied by the Lorentz factor (γ).

See also this article (http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/ParticleAndNuclear/photon_mass.html).

...In other news, that "News" message is misspelled. Can see now why it got taken off.

The proper way to say it is: "Vi ber om ursäkt för felen med nyheterna. De ansvariga har blivit sparkade."

Which directly translates very well and clearly to: "We ask about apologization for faults (pluralis definite form) with news (again, pluralis definite. Swedish doesn't have a "the", you see). Those responsible (pluralis, becomes definite in junction with "de") have been kicked (which suggests the ass, and means "sacked" in Swedish).

Thank you for letting me be of service.

Regardless, it is easily the best reference that I have seen thus far. Chuck Palahniuk, you are wonderful! And if you didn't know it, TGR, it's a book. A book! It's meant to be read first... [mutters]

I honestly wasn't aware that it was a book, either, though so many movies anymore start life that way. I prefer reading books to watching movies anyways.

Hm. Re-reading my post, perhaps I should have clarified. I meant the RPG inspiring the quote, not the book or movie.

Oh, it can't be that much.  After all, all the avatar's I've seen are only 100x100 pixels, which is probably 20Kb at most.

(20(800))/1024 = 3/4Mb

...either I can't operate my calculator anymore (at 2am, this is quite possible), or you are mistaken...
(20*800)/1024 = 16000/1024 = 15.6 MB
And if we take RJ's current avatar (29kb) as a guideline, we end up at 22.6MB

And although I don't think that 20 MB or so will kill Darkmoon's server, it may be a good idea to limit the selection a bit :animesweat

heck, -I- could do that with my server. It might take a little setting up, but it could be done... and I'm only on the end of a DSL...

You could do that if you prefer, but it doesn't bother me either which way. My server is not going to die from 25 MB of pictures. I barely touch the 250GB of band I get every month, and my site is super-popular.

I wasn't offering, I was merely suggesting, since I already have the setup for it, I could set it up with little effort.

Of course, my version is in perl in cgi, rather than in php, but the basic concept is pretty stable....

The other thing to consider is that, by having a smaller number of rotating avatars, people can associate them with you, as opposed to never seeing your posts with the same avatar twice.

It's all part of brand identity.

Ah, Penzance. It's Light Opera - Gilbert and Sullivan.

Interestingly, Penzance (a small town out on the west coast of the lower tip of the UK) was chosen because it was a haven of respectability and common sense - apparently at the time the opera was written, it had recently come up in a survey as the most law-abiding place in the UK, or something of that sort. Which makes the idea of a bunch of pirates there even more laughable... :-)

I think that's the standard IP address assigned by WiFi networks.  192.168/16 is one of three address spaces allocated for private networks.  You aren't supposed to be able to access them by those IP addresses from outside the subnet.

Me, I prefer 10/8.

I notice that there are a lot of words that Firefox spellcheck doesn't have.

In addition, my spelling is somewhere between American and British (I spell math, flavor, estrogen, but travelled, dialogue, grey), which means that Firefox says that I've spelt a lot of words wrong.

My guess would have been Tony Banks who had a similar attitude, but yeah - I figured it was something along those lines.

For those who don't know what we're talking about, it's a sort of sound sampler made with 1962 technology.  Probably the most famous use is the flutes on 'Strawberry Fields Forever' by the Beatles, but the strings turn up all over the place.  They were originally recorded in 1952 in Harry Chamberlin's bedroom.

Sugar-based soft drinks in the US are different from those anywhere else in the world.  Because they're not based on sugar.  We subsidize corn and put protective tariffs on sugar imports, which makes high-fructose corn syrup more economical to use than real sugar.

So in most of the world, soft drinks are made with sugar, but in the US, they're made with corn syrup.

It looks so weird when you see it spelled out. It's also hard to read when it scrolls so slowly (too slow for the beat). But I suppose it would like like a blur if it went at the beat.

She is god awful. The black eyed peas could kick her ass out and be perfectly fine. I weep whenever a song is ruined by her annoying voice; they give her shit lyrics, too.

It's a lot like No Doubt turning into Gwen Stefani, turning into "Gwen Stefani and a black chick singing some horrible 'rasta' solo in every song."

Why do you have to add fail to the equation?

Coach: Oh, really?
Chazz: We're gonna dance to one song, and one song only: "Lady Humps" by the Blackeyed Peas. "What you gonna do with all that junk, all that junk inside your trunk? I'm a get you, get you drunk, get you drunk off my lady humps, my humps, my humps, my lovely lady humps."
Jimmy: [disgusted] I'm not skating to anything with references to lady humps. I don't even know what that means.

And Witch Doctor isn't so bad either. At least once you watch Akamaru do it. (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36529964/)

Someone has been at the Rolf Harris though... that negates it.  AFAIK there is only one situation where Rolf Harris songs do not constitute a crime against humanity, and that is when you bleep out some of the words to make them sound suggestive as was done on "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again".

Ignorance is bliss  >:3

I guess that either means it wasn't you wot dun it, or or the song in question is a cover.
Which might go either way, depending on how old the song actually is.

What, "Two Little Boys"?  Checking the release date it's actually from 1912 but the popular version was done by Rolf Harris in 1969.
In 1970, when the BBC flatly refused to do anything vulgar, a certain radio series hit upon the brilliant idea of taking annoying songs and strategically bleeping out various words to change the meaning of the song into something that they shouldn't have got away with.  Llearch either has a copy of that episode or he's come to the same conclusion as Bill Oddie and John Cleese.

They also did the "Julie Andrews Dirty Songbook" which began with the line "All I want is a **** somewhere..."
