Mr. Tuppenny Man only specified that he hand over Niall, he didn't say which version. So now we know that:

a) Niall is not going to die to the guillotine
b) His real body is most likely in stasis right now

EDIT: Niall fails at basic medicine. Crossbows are not as fatal as you think they may be. In fact, when you got shot by one, or a bullet, pulling it out is the worst thing you can do. This is due to the fact that the projectile is plugging up the arteries it just severed, and with (cross)bows, this feature severely handicaps their lethality. Crossbows may be very good at punching through armor but guns are generally better at killing due to the tendency of their bullets to fragment and really mess things up. (I would link to a photo I posted a while back but that one is just too gruesome)

I expect if flamethrowers exist, Matilda would be tempted to install one into her shower.

Same goes for knife wounds, actually. Leave the bugger in there until you have competent medical attention at hand - it's safer where it is.

Hurts like the dickens, mind, but pulling it out won't change that, either. Just try not to move it, too.

I heard that crossbows tended to cause some kind of hydrostatic shock, but was from another story which may or may not have done its research.
What Niall is doing here is, as you say, not a good thing.  In his defence, most 'Cubi are poor at medicine from what Amber has been saying lately and he's in a lot of pain and perhaps not thinking quite straight.

Thinking about it, under normal circumstances, this might actually be the right thing to do, strangely enough.  The DMFA world has spells which can do this kind of healing largely automatically, but which are likely to require the foreign object to be removed first.  Of course, Niall wouldn't be able to cast such spells with those bracers, but again, he's probably not thinking clearly.

EDIT: And if I were smart I'd have pointed out that Niall doesn't try to remove the bolt until after he's realised something abnormal is going on.  The original story for this was written about 7 years ago so it's difficult to remember quite what I was thinking myself at the time :3

You mean that it's not bleeding and he doesn't feel nearly as much pain as he should? Yeah, I guess in that case, the medical concerns don't really matter. Can't worry about bleeding out if you're a robot and don't even bleed in the first place.

Besides, I did say that it was Niall who failed, not Tapewolf.  :P

Indeed. And we appreciated that, too. ;-]
