Redcaps are for real my favorite faerie creature because somewhere, someone decided that there was a creature that lives in abandoned castles and murders people who wander by it, to dye his cap in their blood - and if he doesn't, and the blood in his cap dries out, he dies.
Poor thing.
This... was a warmup speedpaint type thing, and was tonsoffun.
... Iiiii think I'm glad that I live in the US now, where there aren't any abandoned castles to worry about with something like that.

Thankfully, all we have to worry about are abandoned mines, dark forests, dark streets, abandoned buildings, condemned buildings, and monsters under the bed.

Kobolds are rodents in WoW, but in D&D, they're actually a race of small reptile-men who hang out with dragons. :B Still, with a good DM, anything's possible. You could make up some kind of anthro-mouse race, or just be someone polymorph-cursed into one.
Oh, and a fiddle, you say? BARD. :>
Take the Perform (Strings) Skill and I believe there's many interesting items that go with a fiddle

Aha, thank you very much. The piece was very much an exercise in warm and cold colors, and the green suit the purpose of a colder color very well - it takes the warmth of an orange, and the cool of a blue very very well. I do love a good green.
I totes need to find a D&D group to play with - one that wouldn't mind a complete beginner, hahahaha. I tried to play it once or twice, but I spent so much time going "DURR" and looking at my character sheet and information that I got killed out of convenience before I could think to shout "thunderbolt" and throw a hankie at the DM. ... I hope I could be a little better at that now!

I have just a bit of critique towards your artwork and it is the mouse ears. They look very realistic but sometimes they look like they are not attached to the head, as if they are worn over the hair. I myself am terrible with animal ears, so this kind of bugs me, sorry.
As for the D&D thing- you should look for a group that doesn't stick to the rules that much. I myself am a DM and our party doesn't even bother with stats- we just go instinct.
So you mostly go by rule zero? "The DM is the last word?"

Yes, I expect the players to react naturally to each situation, unencumbered by rules and stats and since we've been playing for so long we all know eachother's characters by heart we only roll a dice to make up for the element of chance. This leaves a lot more room for roleplaying instead of solving math problems.

Wanted to change my hair around, and practice matte surfaces vs shiny surfaces (hair vs fur/clothes) - texturally, accomplishing things in digital painting is a little more difficult. I'm discovering that I actually have to TEXTURE things, rather than draw a couple of lines, point with my magic finger and proclaim "THIS IS A ROCK." - if I do that, it won't look like a rock, it will simply look like plastic. First step around this is drawing a character that looks like it has more than one surface texture. I think I'm getting closer.

I went out with some friends last night, got a wee bit smashed, and when I got back I wanted to do something impressionistic, because I remember reading that Chinese art was traditionally super duper impressionistic and stuff. So here we go!
Hey nice lotus, though I think it would look better if it was a lighter shade of pink on the tips and the base was lighter than the tips of the petals. Also what time of the day is this taking place? I thought it was early morning or late at night due to what seems to be a light source on the right of the picture. The clothing design is quite well done, and the shading is excellent. However it doesn't seem to have quite the nice effect in the bottom right corner because now I can't tell if the boat is moored or not

Personally, I like the color of a harsh red against a moody purple like that, it gives the eye somewhere to travel along the canvas. I'm not too sure of the specifics of this, it's a rather impressionistic thing I did when I was a little on the drunk side, so much of the piece is really up to the viewer to interpret.

I was feeling a little tired and blah today, so what better way to pass the time than by drawing cute pets? This is Fluffy, and I think he needs to go for walkies or something. He looks like he needs to go - and bad. What's that, Fluffy? Kisses? After you've had your walk.
I don't really draw monsterish things very often, so hey. It was a lot of fun.

Much love for the action picture :mowhappy For a first time this is awesome, one can feel the dynamics. Do more :)
Right, here's some critique. An impression I've had from your artwork - and it may be incorrect - is that you tend to default to a mouse-like muzzle. The first Hussar picture was a good step away from that and the second picture really improves on it.
However, with Dymkarra, if I could make one suggestion, it would be to lengthen the muzzle face to give a more equine look to him.
I realise it's a little late now, but that's critique for you :P Hope it helps.

Quoted for truth.
What jumps out at me are the nostrils, which are round and kinda forward facing on a horse, and the cheeks and jawline, which on most horses are very sharply defined.
The ears look more like triangular canine ones than a horse's round and upright ears, but that might be in part because his hair is covering the base of the ear.
I gotta say, I love the fine gold lines on his shirt. Very elegant, very refined.
On an anatomical note, both of his sternocleidomastoids (gawd, what a mouthful...) are shaded in. When a person turns their head like that, the far muscle ends up behind the throat, out of sight. Fhe forward edge of the neck is defined by the throat, which slopes forward to meet the chin.
I've been doing a fair bit practice on horses recently... if you want, I could do a redline with a few suggestions.
Thank you all very much for your help :) I'm doing a little to fix it right now. After all, giftart needs to be good quality.
Red lining will not be necessary, but thank you for the gesture.

Thank you for your help to improve that image :) I do see that it looks much better than it did. Though honestly, I don't like making muzzles too long - too long, and it's hard to make them look... 'human', for want of a better term. The closer the mouth is to the eyes, the easier time I have with facial expressions - though this could simply be my immaturity and inexperience as an artist!

I'm familiar with that feeling - you just have to tell yourself "Okay, thanks for warning me, now let's move on" - doing the really dark contrasty shadows always scared me, but when I actually put them in they look so cool!
I herd a story from a TA when I was at college...
A professor hands out an assignment: make a painting, and spend at least 8-9 hours on it.
Next week, everyone comes in with their paintings. The professor looks them over, and says "Good."
Then he starts handing out X-acto blades. "Now, destroy them."
Understandably, the students were much alarmed. "But, we put a lot of work into these!" they lamented.
"So?" Says the professor. "They're paintings. You've made them before, you'll make more in the future. In the grand scheme of things, a single painting is just one painting. If it's so precious that you're afraid of destroying it, you won't be able to take risks, won't be able to experiment, and probably won't even be able to finish anything for fear of screwing it up. It's best get over that sense of attachment as soon as possible, so lets destroy these paintings already."
It made an impression on me.

But what's this about the kids parents ENCOURAGING their kid to kick other seats? People are losing all respect for anyone else these days. Sadly, I'm becoming less and less surprised every day and get getting more irritated at how irrational people can be.
The tree on the lower right gives me the impression of focal blurr. I love it, it adds a lot of depth.

The expression. I really like it but can't place the emotion. It seems to say hurting, but also seems to hint at a subtly hidden rage that is forming. Either revenge or vengeance. This is really good! You can do malevolent, Nyil. On the really scary, subconscious and psychological level.
Well done!

I just add how much I like this piece to one more spot. I really can't say enough how much I like it even though I think the original lip colour was better.
I think the part that I'm most impressed with is the ear. I know that, for the most part ears aren't that hard. However I've always found that human ears are hard to make look good, so when I see what you did with that one, I'm damn impressed.
I got some advice from my mom to change some things, so here's a few changes. The hairstyle is different, the skin tone was changed to look less pasty and corpse-like, and her nose is smaller now.
I love the feathering of her hair at the temple. The flowers in her hair sort of lead into flowers on the branch behind her... I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it's really cool.
The lighting on the shoulder throws me off a bit. The shadows on the back of her shoulder seem rather deep, and the highlight on the upper hem of her sleeve continues all the way around to the front of her dress. The "backlit" edges on both sides of her arm make it somehow look flattened to me.
Wow, I only just noticed the flower embroidered on her sleeve. You really like those little touches, don't you?
And right now she's thinking: "Some day, my mouse will come for me..." :<
The change to the nose really seems to suit her; as does the hairstyle. Her hair doesn't look as thick anymore.
It's a really good piece, and it'll make a fine addition to your portfolio. But above all, I love those little flowers. It's the tiny details that make your art great. :)

I feel bad that I haven't been working on furry stuff as much as I have been, but I have other things to work on right now. Oh well! This was a lot of fun to do, though a lot of the designs aren't Indian, but are Egyptian Islamic or something. Or inspired from those, with my own flare. I'm kind of bad about that, I have to add my own flare to freaking everything. Oh well!

An experiment with drafting with white lines instead of black lines. It was interesting, but quick - I think I'll be experimenting with this more in the future. I don't... Ever seem to really draw myself as happy anymore, oddly. I guess I'll have to do something extra happy the next time I do!

Ah, I absolutely love this one. I think the thing I like the most, outside of my preference for the fantasy style, is the way you handle sources of light like spells. I've admired this in a lot of artists and I really enjoy seeing examples of it. Keep it coming, Nyil!
The first thing my eyes were drawn to was the sword. And how well the handle and blade were drawn. Then I noticed the fire and light sources and It's.. just so pretty. o_o

Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun, gray characters can pull this look off so much better than I can - it's just with how easy contrast is to pull off with a character like that.

(S)he is -always- angry. I don't think it would be quite accurate to draw a smile all up in there, do you?
I'll keep that in mind the next time - maybe some delicate highlights would have done well there.
Well... you _could_ draw a smile that looks very angry. That's always an unusual expression to give a go at.
Just a thought for something to try sometime, mind. No objections to what you're currently drawing, nor how you're drawing it.

And yes (having quickly glanced through the FA page), furries wearing hides and stuff is a fun idea to play with in a gruesome sort of way. When I want to portray someone as being a total psychopath, leather made from their victims usually figures into it somewhere...

... Oops, that painting is actually really really really really old - the first one in this thread. Guess I accidentally quoted that when I was posting my other painting last night.
The spell circle was done in a separate file, several blue circles and then some freehand doodles inside them to make them look more complicated, and then set on top of everything else in the painting. I then set that layer to... color or lighten I think. Some mode to make it look glowy and neat. Just a little something to 'cheat' Photoshop into doing what I ask of it.

With regards to the step by step, I'd say post it anyway, regardless of if people seem to care or not. Only way to get them interested is show them something. The only question that actually matters is if you want to post the step by step which can be a hard thing to decide, I admit, when you feel like no one is interested.
I'd ask myself: Am I proud of the process? Did it yield a result that I am proud of and thusly want to show my work? Did you learn a new trick that might help someone that you could showcase here?
Anyway, just something to consider. You're a very talented artist, Nyil. Even if people aren't responding, I promise you that people are looking.
Actually, I would very much enjoy seeing a step-by-step process (if it doesn't require too big of an effort from you)

I just think the process for this one is a little funny, and shows how much things tend to change for me on a total whim. At first, this was going to be a knight templar about to go ballistic on someone, but the background looked kinda cool so I decided to paint it in. I don't have all the teeny tiny little steps, but the process as a whole, I think, is interesting, and illustrates how flexible one needs to be throughout the process, and just go with new opportunities as they're presented. This particular painting also demonstrates how I use things like framing and scaling to attempt to suck the viewer right in. So the thoughts might be interesting to see, even for me - I'd like to see how I rationalize things afterwards.

wall of text\
Basically: It's game where you play as a single character who you can go around anywhere you want (as long as you can reach it) you kill enemies (or civilians if you want to go on the odd rampage) collect their dropped weapons/money/jewelry, you speak to some people, do some errands (quests) kill (lots of) dragons, get rocketed up into the sky by giants (a glitch), you explore dungeons for treasure, usually crap by the end of the game, you can use bows, shields, axes, swords, daggers, maces, (possibly spears in a later update) and magic, you can use 1 weapon each hand ( a shield in 1 and a sword in the other, magic in 1 hand sword in the other, 2 swords in each hand, double magic, ect) you can buy houses, steal everything from everyone in existance, and just basically fool around, the more enemies you kill (from wolves to dragon) the stronger you get in what you used to kill them, the more non-combat abilities you use the better you get at them (alchemy for example, you level it up by making potions, and the better you are at it the more potions you can make) The game has a massive world, filled with secrets and different areas (from snowy tundras to lush valleys, no jungles or desert though, the climate is mainly frigid)
/wall of text
Basically: it's a game about hitting bad guys (or not so bad guys), exploring, and collecting loot.

Something I noticed, a lot of your figures seem to be facing left recently, if not always looking left, and in quite a few pieces their chins are down. Not a very consistent observation, but one I thought I should mention if for no other reason than a "Oh hey, lookie thar".
More on topic, I love how you did the hair in the last image. Very natural. Something seems a bit off with how the dress lays on the chest (sounds pervy when I say it, but not sure how to say it technically), though I haven't exactly studied anatomy so it might just be a lack of experience. The way you do blood is very neat; it stands out as a good contrast to the rest of the scene, but it doesn't seem ridiculous.

This weekend was spent at a competition for Irish music - this was my band's set. This was recorded a few days before the fleadh, when we finally decided on what to play and how to play it, though a few hours before the competition we made a few more major changes.
The competition was a sobering experience, one in which I realized that judges would prefer a poor musician to me, a half Asian. Although many of the door guards and staff thought I was a judge because of my playing (I practiced in the halls and spare rooms when I had time before my solo competition), I was given last place, despite many of the other competitors not having kept beat and being off tune.
Regardless of the weekend, the judges' prejudice has only strengthened my resolve to become an even stronger musician, and to continue growing. Irish music is part of who I am, and part of how I communicate and spread joy to those around me. No judge will ever take that away.
Gogogo! show 'em who's boss :mwaha

Hamburger eaten by a cow. So awkward.

Hamburger eaten by a cow. So awkward.
For awkward, that ud-
utterly trumps the fact that cheese is a dairy product.
I'm pretty sure I've seen Lorenda eating a hamburger in the comic...
I like the drawing, but I sstill think you drew Lorenda a bit too fat, but otherwise to the people saying that it's awkward she's eating a hamburger, don't forget that the cheese doesn't have to be from the dairy product of a cow, (goat cheese for example) and where I live we don't always have beef in our (homemade) hamburgers, other types of meat work equally well (turkey burger is my fave)
Wasn't there a couple of strips that dealt with this very concept much earlier in the comic's history?
I don't think Demon diets are restricted by anything like biology, awkwardness, or common sense.

Now that we're done derailing Nyil's art thread with, offtopic food choices of a character and irrelevant theorizing about demon biology. Feel free to take that to the general discussion board.
Time to go back to talking about the artwork.
Which is I think she looks healthily overweight. And it's got the typical Mouse stylings of rich depth shading I do enjoy looking at. My favorite part of the picture is the expression, something about the facial expression just feels right. Not sure I know how to word it.
Anyways, keep on rolling out that artwork!

Thanks for getting things back on track - I kind of thought that the way I drew her was a stylistic thing - things drawn in a more cartoony way tend to be a little thinner than things in a more painted way. Oh well, I'll take that into consideration the next time I draw her. Thank you!

I have to say that I'm really impressed with the anatomy on this one. Normally your method of presenting characters leaves the anatomy blurred and unclear so it can be hard to get a good gauge on it, but in this picture, it's very clear and well presented. I like it!
Now on to more serious stuff.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm not the best where it comes to helping people sort out emotions, but if there *is* anything I can do just say the word. You're a great person, Nyil, and I'd rather see you flourish than suffer.

I still think Merlin should draw him. Over and over and over again. With all the details - I was originally going to put tattoos in there, too, just to make the details more fun. ... But Merlin should definitely draw him about a thousand times.

But anyhow, about the drawing, it's pretty good, but somehow I think that the head might be a bit too small, and the left part of the leg/ hips/pants is somewhat off.

I can't help but notice that a lot of your work is soft on defining shadows, and it makes things look flat. The hair has very little depth, and the inside corners of the ears don't seem to "lift" off of the inner ear.
Conversely, the lighting makes things pop right out, like the shape of the muzzle, and that highlight on the shoulder. Not to mention your use of color: the green eyes look incredibly vibrant.
The other thing that throws me off about the hair is that the dark strokes don't seem like shadow, they seem like dark streaks of hair. I love how fluid and silky the hair looks, tho.
Dat lace. :dface The detail is gorgeous.

Aw, thank you so much, hun :)
Honestly I stole the patterns on the wing thing from the Book of Kells (or one of those knotty books) - it's just a repeat knot, then some other details carved out of it so it didn't look quite so empty. It was actually really quite random!

*squee* What a surprise to wake up to! I'm really starting to like what you're doing with the hair stylization. I personally like your use of shadow here. Some people have the tendency to give the red panda face too much depth, and I like the way this portrayal came out - I like the shorter muzzle look on my girl.
And we all know how much I hate you for your freehand lace skills. :)

Ya know, what I love about this (I mean, apart from the usual awesome use of colour, economy of detail, and organic shapes/lines that your work always has) is that the figure and ground plane are very literal, and the clouds are very stylistic, but neither one conflicts with the other.
...
I dunno if that made much sense. It's like... let's say there's a drawing of a character with completely realistic, humanoid anatomy and a head drawn in warner bros. or anime style. The result is something too realistic to be cartoony and too cartoony to be realistic.
This, on the other hand, is a comfortable mix of both... I think that's awesome.

The only thing I can really say about this picture, in terms of critique, is that I really like the how you did the sky here. I've seen a lot of different representations of clouds and the sky in general, but this style has always stood out as one of the neater ones. The swirls man, the swirls!
Ah, I suppose I can also say that the colour for the dune itself feels off to me. Feels almost too... muddy? I dunno. I'll chalk it up to me expecting a desert sand dune. X3

Huh, I don't really think it's a desert dune, due to the reed-like plants on the picture, not too mention all the clouds wouldn't fit into a desert (unless it's spring)

Note the part where I said I was expecting one. I didn't say it was one, or was intended to be one, merely that I was expecting one. When I think of a 'dune' I admittedly always think of a *sand* dune.

Oddly enough, I had a very similar thought when I first saw/commented on this picture on other sites.
Gollum: The furry edition.
It gives me a rather sad feeling of little to eat and little to do, with nothing really being around.
I'm not sure, but from how this is drawn, I'd say he was under water. The lack of more fish gives a rather bleak look to the environment. He's starving and all he was able to see and catch was on fish. Not good for him, not good.

Digital painting is a lot more flexible than most other styles, once you start getting the hang of it!
I actually enjoy drawing humans a lot, but it seems a lot of the people who look at my art aren't into that kind of stuff xD it's a shame, really.

I would like to try that more... When the computer can manage to stay on longer than half an hour. :B
I actually tend to draw furs only half the time. The other half is usually humans, elves, and the like. I just wasn't expecting human here was all. ;3

It's a statement of the existential suffering experienced by human/dragon kind in a society where those who defy their cultural norms are thought of as lesser beings and denigrated for acting on their beliefs.
It's hard to be a dragon in a furry's world :'(

I didn't have any paintings to post for today (it's been busy), so I just thought I'd post a wee little set that we did last year. This was literally a few minutes after we came up with this set - enjoy!

This was a lot of fun to do, I can't decide which I enjoyed more, thinking up the facepaint designs or figuring out a way to make an all white ugly as heck bridal gown look interesting. I had this in my head since Friday, but since Saturday was a work day + birthday, I didn't really have a lot of time to work on it until today. But, finally, she is finished!

Haha, thank you! I got a little lazy with the slit on the bell x3 Next time I'll do something fancier, promise!

That looks like your average deep sea creature. They look scarier than they are dangerous, and since this is what you think of your shriveled heart, you are not dangerous, and only your heart is scary. :3

Awesome art is awesome. Real fun seeing you put this one together. To see a whitish blob with a blank background become this... it's amazing.
I don't know which picture is more beautiful, the one with Wildy looking towards the stone stacked pillars or the one with a mouse standing on a human skull with a sword and arrows in the background.
Thank you guys so much! It was a lot of fun to draw for everyone, I'm actually surprised at how easily it came out - sometimes I have problems getting ideas out in the first few minutes, but this one flowed really well!

Mao carrying a box on the bottom of the sea. In a way, I want to think the face represents Llearch grinning a troll face while he tricks Mao into carrying him. After all, we all know him as the box.

That's one of the reasons why we didn't cover Nouveau in art history class -- it's a DECORATIVE movement. ;) Though, it's also Mucha's thing to be positively dripping with filigree. You can find other artists of the period who were way more spare. The highly defined linework, sweeping/flowing motion, and penchant for sweet sweet S-curves are all there, though. ... Um. anyway.

I'm enjoying watching these, in case nobody mentioned.
These physical representatives of sins are quite nicely done. Not just how well their done, but also how well they seem to represent their respective sin in how they are shown. Nice! :U

Commission for Kimmy Kitsune. Human flesh tones are odd, which is why this was a fun challenge for me. Skin tones have a lot of parts - base tones, mid tones, light tones, dark tones, cold tones, warm tones, and they vary depending on how thinly spread out the skin is in a particular location! At least fur is somewhat stable across a particular body!
Well, I digress. It was fun for me to putz around with human flesh tones, I need to do it more often.
