[Art] Nyil's ImagineFX Prep (Ambargh the Great)(5/19/14)

Alright.. So, I know I had an old art thread, but that was full of old art, and I kind of want a progress thread just for this year. But I have a good reason for that, aside from avoiding old art! In a year's time, I'd like to start submitting my art to ImagineFX magazine - one of the biggest fantasy digital art magazines in the world. The competition to get accepted into FXPose is intense, and they only accept the best, so I have a ways to go before I'm ready to even consider submitting art. So, at the end of the year, I'd like to have a record of my progress to see how much I've improved, and if I'm actually ready to get published internationally. It's an intimidating prospect, but it's a goal I plan to meet!

So for now, what I have are three things, posted in chronological order:

A dreamscape commission uploaded on January 21st, this is when I started to pay more attention to texture, and started to branch out from JUST using the Hard Round brush in Photoshop (which is still my main brush, but still). The technique I use is the same as usual - start with a splotch of color and see where it takes me!

This was part of an art trade with WolfintheWalls, otherwise known as Wolfie, who some of you Anthrocon and MidwestFurFest attendees might be familiar with (or, your butts might be familiar with her hands. She Peenches!) I took a little longer on this than usual, to detail the chainmail and to make it look emotional and whatnot. It was an interesting experiment in a limited palette. It was uploaded on January 24th.

This was my half of a trade with MoodyFerret. I really had a fun time of this one, experimenting with a lot of things I don't normally do - narratives, exciting poses, and keeping the phrase 'don't rush' in mind. Admittedly, I have a bad tendency of rushing, especially towards the end, and I did rush the ending of this a tiny bit because I just wanted to see it done. I still like how it turned out, though! This was posted today, February 5(Technically the 4th when I posted it, but whatever, splitting hairs)

Another of the Four Horsemen! This one was a bit of fun to do, pretty different from how I tend to approach things, but I think it worked pretty well!

This was a commission piece. He tipped me an extra $25, so I got to really take my time on this. The bricks were all drawn in by hand, as were all the textures - I only used the hard round brush in PhotoShop, as well as a custom dirt brush for some of the bricks. The perspective was also pretty much just winged on the fly - I know how to do the perspectives up to five point, but I just decided to try it from my head this time. It was fun, and I got to do some research in to Arabic culture and architecture while I was at it!

This was a commission for someone's birthday - I wasn't supposed to post it for a month, so I stepped it up a bit so I wouldn't hate myself in a month. I got to post it early, though, so I decided that that 'little bit extra' should become standard, so that when I do do something extra, it'll be even better.

Gift painting for Tony the Cookie. Someone pointed out that I tend to shy away from sharp contrasty shadows, so I experimented a little with them and made the shadows a little darker and sharper than normal. Cast shadows and form shadows and all that!

Wow, that looks so awesome.

It makes me hope that someday you draw an anthro displacer beast (if you haven't already), holding a different object in each of its four hands like a Hindu god and coming out of a really elaborately painted interdimensional portal or something. Now that would look amazing.

After a couple rounds of chit chatting with a friend, I decided to try a slightly different method of blocking colors in, so colors will get less muddy. Once I get the hang of things, I think it'll look pretty spiffy.
