As for the realize part, wasn't it more along the lines she went into a raving rabid rant that told Ashford her motives.

That face after Joshua resigned almost says to me (" Just you wait till I get you back to base Joshua! Now I'm going to use red hot pokers along with the whips and chains!"). I take it worker satisfaction is a low priority for Keaton?

Keaton's experiencing a bit of mood whiplash, here.  That's all right, it's good for her.  *evil grin*  From being infuriated enough to be ready to launch herself across the table at Joshua's throat, to feeling the metaphorical floor drop out from beneath her feet.  Good times, oh yes.

I get the impression that Keaton has a great deal of difficulty in dealing with opposition, especially from "mere beings".  First she rants at Ashford, then kills him when he objects to her little plot.  (I'm sure that sort of thing is frowned upon in the Employee's Handbook.)  Then she looks ready to kill Joshua.  For someone who's supposed to have been plotting her revenge for 600 years or so, she doesn't seem to have much patience.

For what it's worth, my understanding is that the plotting was, by necessity, mostly done inside her own head, and carefully at that; after all, it's hard to plot against someone who can read your mind if they decide to do so.

Consequently, while there's been a long time of planning, not very much of that planning involved anyone else's input, or interference. And she may well be less good at making plans up on the fly, which I'd guess is the state that she's in now.


Finally, there's also Jakob, who has spent a similar length of time managing an entire series of kingdoms. Even if they were small "kingdoms", that's a lot of people to practice management skills on, and prepare oneself for the cutthroat world of high politics. I'd bet that he's got a hand in there somewhere with prodding her into doing things the way he wants; not to mention Daryil, who may or may not be involved in any of the plots, purely to amuse himself.

Without someone else to bounce ideas off of, or point out flaws in her ideas, it would be awfully easy to overlook things.  Maybe something very important.  That's happened to me a time or three, and I've never been as obsessed with something the way Keaton is.  As I consider things (having just re-read the whole story), I get the feeling that this idea of stealing Jakob's ion beam weaponry was a sudden impulse, and not thought out at all well.  She found out about the weapons and jumped at the chance to get them.  If she'd taken the time to think things through, she'd probably have come up with something rather more subtle, and less prone to failure.  I wonder if she had any idea of how she was going to use them, once she did get them.

As for Jakob, I'd say you're right; he's had plenty of practical experience.  He also respects his allies and adversaries, be they creature or being, for their abilities.  He certainly seems to try not to underestimate anyone.
