In theory, its purpose is to "be the last poster" in the thread.

Since that contest will remain undecided as long as people keep posting, no one partaking in the contest wants to not be the last poster, and there are no "rules" besides "the last poster wins the title of Last Poster", it basically turns into an excuse to post whatever you feel like posting.
