Hopefully some people recognize these games. If you have only played one or two of them don't be afraid to ask. My personal opinion is that Grandia II was the game for the Sega Dreamcast. It had good graphics (even for today), good music, strong characters, a great gameplay system, and best of all a fantastic storyline. Post your own opinions. I'm interested.

Note- If you think of any other RPGs for the Dreamcast you thought were better just say in your post.

Man I'll say skies of arkadia hands down.
It had a unique world, great graphics, a compelling story, and the fact that it reinforced just exploring the map.

Personaly I felt there could have been more done with the ship to ship combat system (I'd have liked to see some of the random monster encounters as ship sized battles)  more roving patrols, or pirate attacks.  but still it was a blast

PS
TIME STALKERS sucked so hard... that game was just plain horrible

I agree with all of this, however I still believe Grandia was better. I also don't think Time Stalkers sucked. I liked it. Starting at level 1 each dungeon seemed bad at first but eventually it seemed good, especially when you got up in ranks.

Grandia II had problems (the story sucked so hard--Just once, I'd like to see something other than the hackneyed ``Church is corrupt and actually is doing evil'' plot, because you can see it a mile away and it gets really boring).

But it had an awesome combat system, far better than anything else I've played outside of a tactics game.

Specifically, in most games, you have three or four fighting options:

- attack
- special attack
- magic
- items

And usually, you only use two or three.  For me, it's usually items.

Typically, by the time that you can afford enough healing potions to be useful in battle, you have a mage who knows a more effective healing spell.

Grandia II was the only game where I would regularly go into all of those categories (including items) during battle.

--Edit--

Also, this quote:

So this is the power of the Granasaber... It fights evil and has plenty of leg room.

Actually for it's time the plot was great. Actually I have only seen it two times. Both in Grandia II and The Da Vinci Code. Is there somewhere else it was used?

Stigmata.

Final Fantasy Tactics.

Dogma
The Da Vinci Code
The Seventh Sign
End of Days
Godfather Part III
The Name of the Rose
(possibly) The Bridge of San Luis Rey

I could go on.

It's kind of like This PA strip.  If you've got a priest or preacher as a character, watch out because he's going to turn into a ravenous, genetically altered diabolical monster before the end.

While it wasn't the main plot
in XenoGears there was a section where you meet a young Idealistic priest and gear pilot who joins you when he finds out that not only is his church corrupt but that they have been using the orphanage he's been running for the order as there own perves little playground

Yet I fail to see your point.

Both Final Fantasy Tactics and Da Vinci Code came out years after Grandia II
And I don't see any direct connection between GII and either Stigmata, The Name of The Rose nor End of Days.
(and I haven't seen the other ones)

Heck, the "ancient evil that must be vanquished with an ancient weapon" portion of the story seemed far more clichéd than the religion part of it. However, it's the base of 90% of japanese RPGs, so you can't blame them for that

Does Shenmue count? Cause I'd totally say that.
Otherwise I didn't care for any of the DC RPGs.

Rakala

Shenmue wasn't really an RPG. Yes, Shenmue was a great game and arguably one of the best for the DreamCast. It was more of an action detective game. Although I feel sorry for Ryo. They never finished the game.

Kenji

Well if they classify Zelda as an RPG, I figured Shenmue fit in too. Granted I'd be happy if neither was called one, but ah well. I tried. :B

Rakala

I would classify Legend of Zelda as more of an action/adventure game. How is it an RPG?

Kenji

Don't ask me, its what every game site seems to classify it as. Despite 2 being the only RPG.

Fresnor

Weren't the Phantasy Star games originally on the Dreamcast?  Thought that would have been considered to be the best considering people played it even after the system bombed.

Jack McSlay

Phantasy Star was originally on Master System. Phantasy Star Online was originally on Dreamcast :3

tho it's not all fun now all the servers have been shut down. and even otherwise, you'd need a dialup connection or lurk on ebay to find a broadband adapter

Oh snap! I forgot all about Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast, ever since I started playing it on the Gamecube.
Yeah, that would definitely be my vote for RPG.
Unless... unless you count the disc that had the original Shining Force in it.

Rakala

Bleh. Shining Force 2 was so much better than 1. Unfortunately it was never remade unlike the first one which has been done over SO many times. I got an emulater on my computer just to play the second one.
