Nice save.  It looks like Piflak hasn't done quite as much homework on Dan as I thought.

EDIT: The Katbox version has "Synchronised cover story" as the title.  I was under the impression that Regina -was- Dan's girlfriend for a bit, using him as a cover to get close to people so she could then murder them.  But I could be misremembering it, or it could have changed since we got Abel's Story instead of Regina's.

EDIT EDIT: Yeah, one of the comments on the Katbox page is hinting at this too.  See page 388.

The One Guy

My guess is it's a half truth: they were going to start dating, but then the incident happened, perhaps even on their first date.

Given how powerful ascended clan leaders are, Piflak could probably stop the fight in a split second without anybody getting hurt.  I take Piflak's statement as the standard policeman's introduction ("Can I be of assistance", "Is there a problem", and "What's going on here" being among the usual queries.) in coming across a situation.  Regina's employer is a demon (not to be speciest or racist, but they do have a reputation) and has probably run into this situation many times in the past.  Her next statement, if required, would probably be along the lines of "Regina, there's someone over here I want you to meet".

Edit:

My bad.  Now that I look at the image, Regina's boss is obviously a succubus.  Given the number between cubs, I suspect that both cubs and demons would be used to having to separate people at parties.

Regina definitely at least used to have a thing for Dan, if they weren't dating. Speculation: They wanted to, but Dan couldn't because his friends needed him or something, which drive Regina to kill those people and attack Wildy out of some misguided attempt to win him over. In her head, it was them keeping her from being with Dan, and without them, they could be together.

Also, I thought Regina's boss was a Cubi? ...Can you be both?

Not sure what you're getting at, she is a succubus.  It's not like she's even hiding the fact.

That was in response to an earlier comment that Regina's employer is a demon: I think there was more than a single misunderstanding involved here.

That aside, huh. Guess they didn't need the rumor mill after all.

Hah, that'll teach me to speed-read comments.

Dan's face in panel five is a thing of beauty.  And now I'm realizing that if Regina wasn't as dim, she'd be downright dangerous as a foe for a simple reason - her eyes make it difficult to tell where she's actually looking.

It seems to me that Reg might have the original 'They're my ex' thought and Dan copied it, having heard her thoughts. It seems (based on page 388) that she wanted to be in a relationship with Dan, but chose a rather horrific way of showing it.

Well, there went my expectation for a Regina shaped hole in a wall...

To defend Piflak's background check on Dan for a moment... it's probably worth remembering that Wildy had to tell Biggs the identity of the Demon who attacked their family: http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_1506.php

We also know that Bigg's is pretty well connected; not just with Destania, but also with Kria and with Kria's best intelligence service agent: http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_1479.php  http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_1458.php

We could theorize that Kria's influence was a factor in keeping Regina's name unknown; and we might also plausibly be able to theorize that Kria has taken active steps to keep Bigg's in the dark. I somewhat doubt that given that not only did Kria not know why Dan was set on ripping Regina a new one; Kria also didn't have an issue handing out the address Aliph and Regina were staying at to Biggs AFTER the party where Aliph and Dan cut a deal to not kill Regina: http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_976.php http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_1518.php

We can probably safely assume then that Regina's name and family association was not something that had been recorded. We can probably also safely assume that the only people who actually know of Regina's connection to that attack consists of Dan, Wildy, Biggs, and maybe Aliph after the aforementioned party conversation.

With such a small circle of people who actually know of that connection; it wouldn't be a surprise that Piflak might not have seen a problem with having Dan and Regina at the party together.

I suspect Regina actually has a message for Dan.

Good catch.  I like that idea, and as far as we know Regina -is- the only agent Dark Peg has that he could send himself.  On the other hand, Regina's angry reaction plays against it.
Also, Regina would likely be killed by Wildy before she managed to cross the threshold of Lost Lake Inn, and I don't see Alexsi being very welcoming either, since she's unlikely to forget that incident.
But if it's not her bringing the message, then who?

And if it is her, Regina could accidentally betray Dan's link to Destania by passing on the message within earshot of Torin.

I can't see DP relying on Regina for anything of importance, nor knowing anything about Dan's movements. This looks like a job for minions. He'll just have to obtain some. (I wonder if there's any kind of secure messenger service about.)
