An interesting point.

Some stories go into pointing out why people turn into vampire and werewolf.

Maybe it depends on the injury and exposure to certain things. If it was a virus that changes you into a werewolf, then the amount of exposure might effects your odd of becoming one.

Like a bite is close to a 100% change and if its just a scratch you get a 90/10% chance against you not turning. Though if that is the case, theirs the chance of mutations and what not.

Curious how that all ended up. Magical plagues must be the most annoying things to figure out.

I'm betting on the fact that the sword absorbed the magic somewhat, which might have been enough for the transformation to not hold effect.
