This thread serves three purposes: To find out whether someone still plays Quake 1, to organize Quake 1 matches, and to discuss the appeal of the game's several aspects, whether level design, gameplay, or whatever.

Also, to make it more appealing, you can talk about all the stupid or silly things that have happened. :D I once jumped over one of them explosive crates(I forget which level) while a guy was shooting me. He rocketed the crate just as he walked up to it. Giblet fun.

I shall start.

I still play Quake. I play both the normal version and the mods that come with some servers, such as RuneQuake at (IP:209.239.113.236).

Personally, my favorite level is the level END, where you go up against Shub Niggurath and all its craaaaazy guardians. I believe this is a good deathmatch level, mainly because it has a central room We all know how often people like to hide in obscure places in wait for people to come into the central room. There is a circular platform space surrounded by lava, and a path going around that lava moat. The best weapons here are the nailgun, rocket launcher, and lightning gun, if you don't get shot acquiring it. Also, Quad Damage. That always makes things awesome. The lack of a Pentagram of Protection simply serves to this level's appeal, as you won't find anybody hopped up on invincibility running around and firing rockets at people in the central chamber.

Alrighty! Your turn.

Seriously, I better not be the only person here. ಠ_ಠ

I never liked Quake all that much, even when it came out.  It had its fun moments, like quad-damage rocket fishing, the 'GIVE H' business(*) and it was fun to play to the 'Psychedelic Years' CDs instead of the sucky default soundtrack, but it just didn't do much for me.
I only played the thing end-to-end because I was convinced the end boss was Satan (owing to the line "Satan's power reflects %s' telefrag" as one of the death strings in the main executable).  Going head-to-head with a giant sea-polyp was something of an anticlimax, to say the least.

I do still play Doom from time to time, though  :P

(*) Entering 'Give H' on the console caused the player to immediately roll over into a very strange state where he is neither alive nor dead, but drools vacantly - only able to jump up and down (on his side, no less) and fire his gun.

This becomes interesting since 'H' is slang for 'Heroin'.  Actually, if memory serves most of the cheat codes are abbreviated to their first letter, so something like:
'GIVE SMACK 100'
'GIVE RESIN 100'
...worked.  I wish I could remember them all.

Have you tried the RuneQuake mod? It's full of some cool stuff, such as the Rune of Wierdness, which allows you to launch little floating bubbles that upon contact with somebody else causes them various disabilities like 'Too Much Coffee,' 'Uncontrollable jumping,' 'Drunkness,' etcetera. Also, you get a grappling hook. :D

By the way, 'H' was short for 'Health'. By 'Give H'ing you were giving an indeterminable amount of health, giving you properties of both life and death. If you gave yourself too much health, you'd go into that state. I Used to put like, 666 or something.

For the cheats, 'God' was godmode, 'Fly' was flymode, I don't like that too much. 'noclip' was... well, no clipping mode. Means you can walk freely through stuff. 'Notarget' made monsters not attack you unless you attacked them or around them. 'Impulse 9' was all weapons and full ammo, and 'Impulse 255' was quad damage. I think you could do 'gravity x' or something to change gravity levels. Not sure. But then there was '+mlook' which enabled mouse, and 'crosshair 1' to enable a slightly off crosshair and 'crosshair 0' to remove it. Then there were the bind commands. All the console stuff I know. :D

It looks like the last time I played Quake seriously was in 1997.  Now that I think about it, I did enjoy the NPR-Quake mod.  I always wanted to make my own that gave the game a 1974 videotape look, with slight blooming, colour trails on the lights and explosions, and segment dropouts.  Sadly I don't have the experience with writing that kind of image filter, let alone in realtime...

Specifically, it gave you zero, which the game did not like one bit.  It took us a surprising amount of time to realise it was expecting a numeric parameter.

Azure Agony.  It wasn't mud-coloured, and it made a good spot for rocket fishing.  If memory serves, the background music for that was "You keep me hangin' on" as recorded by Vanilla Fudge.

Ah yes, a fun level. If you had enough armour and health, you could rocketjump atop one of the ledges in those little + area pockets and hide in the darkness until someone came near. That was fun.

I suppose it was because I played the trial too much, but my favorite levels were mainly limited to the stuff you'd find in the first episode. Ziggurat Vertigo, Gloom Keep, and The House of Cthon. Shub Niggurath's Pit was the exception.

I've got Quake on Steam.  It came bundled in the id Super Pack.  It comes with GLQuake and QuakeWorld.  I also have a Quake CD laying around somewhere for non-Steam installations, but it is possible to mod Steam's version if need be.  It's been a long time since I actually sat down and played any DM with it, so it's just sitting in my Steam account, uninstalled.  I prefer Quake 2 over it though.

I've never really gotten used to the Q2 system.

I'm thinking of picking this up via steam soon.

Quake 2 could be played the same as Quake, although with some difficulty.  It was during my time playing Quake 2 that I finally switched over to wasd+mouse instead of just using the arrow keys.  I've never gone back.

But I digress.

It would be fun to play Quake again... I suppose I should do that one of these days.

+mlook in Q1 allows you to WASD+Mouse. :3 So it'd be fun to see how much better you are with that.

Always thought it was odd that they'd de-emphasize mouselook for the first Quake when Final Doom essentially required it.

Orion Asmodeus Dezagrats

Final Doom required it mainly because it was designed to be more difficult than the rest. The use of Y-axis auto-aim in the system allowed for ease in shooting up or down, but it's true that the keys simply didn't do what the mouse did; they did not have the speed or ease allowed by a mouse to high rates of reaction to fire from another direction.

And ultra-violence, whoo. Don't even TRY that with the keys.
Of course, the zDoom mod helps you in that respect, granting you access to many features, including mouselook.

But de-emphasizing mouselook on Quake, I suppose might have been to make it easier on younger players who would, probably, most often go for the Easy difficulty gate in the beginning. The older players would generally have the inclination to figure out how to access and enable mouselook and customize WASD settings, so...

Of course not everyone figured it out. :B

Quake is the game I have the fondest memories when it comes to modding and stuff. I've already made a bunch of cool/funny stuff with it, including:

- replacing the grenades with human heads, and the sounds accordingly
- making the axe strike 5 times per seconds
- LOTS of new weapons
- make the enemies run away from you
- An f-zero like racing game
