VSMIT is banned because from what I recall, the four years in high school are basically accounting for the three years you're required to take in high school (at least where I went) and the two at the UC. It's complicated, and to be honest I really don't care.

Jairus is banned for forgetting us Canadians are forced to learn French from elementary school, and although most people decide to ignore it to pursue a different language, your graduation language requirement actually starts in Grade 6 (at least that's what I've been told the new change is) and you don't have to take one in Grade 12. Thus, five years. I think it's kind of silly myself.

Darkdragon is banned because while I did not know when you started studying French, I do know that certain individuals in Canada are maintaining the status quo of two official languages of English and French, requiring all documents and signage have two languages on them. My sympathies.

Jairus is banned for not knowing the differences between the Canadian system and the US system.

Anyways, you can get around especially in western Canada with only English, and I've heard you can get around with only French in Quebec and New Brunswick (I've never been there). I've also been told the language requirements change from province to province and it gets about as complex as setting the correct time on a VCR machine from there.

VSMIT is banned for being misinformed. You can in Montréal (which has a large English sector), but outside of that I'd suggest you to stick to French.
