Random.org and LavaRnd are absolutely random (they use an outside source of entropy, i.e. sound). I use Robbie's script which is "random enough," that is it uses rand(), so it's kinda random.

Of hugs, Madd the Sane gets tonight's.

The method I use, while the longest, is probably the most random of all, because I actually go through the entire userlist, meaning, all 13-odd-hundred of them.

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but how random in the random number generator behind this? I've had about 3 random hugs, given the number involved my odds of getting even 1 hug are less than 0.1%.

I don't object to the hugs, quite the contrary, they brought a little smile to my day. Good job to you guys to coming up with idea and keeping it going.

I have been told it(random.org) hashes of the static from a web cam, so pretty random.

It's the nature of randomness to have clumping of points.  Many people confuse random with what would be a more uniform spread. For instance, near the begining of the random hugs, I recieved six hugs over the course of about two months.  I havn't recieved one recently, and I didn't recieve any in the first month.  In a truely random ssytem, some people will get many hugs and some people will get few or none.  The median will be pretty uniform over time, but there will always be apparent anomalies.

also, your odds are 0.16% of being selected initially, but much higher as only members active in the past 30 days are eligible (or as the random hugger's preferences lie)

By the way, tech, that doesn't exactly make your selection more random, you just have a wider range.

Well, I have been working on my script, and I unveil to you: Version 3!

It will never return members that have been inactive for over a month, the text is multi-colored, and, if you click on the image, you get the non-image version, which has links to the person's profile, and a direct PM link. Also it tells you the number of attempts  it went through before it found a member which complies.
It still works off rand() though.

Version 4 is the same as version 3, but it uses LavaRnd as its random source:

Whoopsy, forgot yesterday's huggle. I was out on the boat with my familiy; they were wakeboarding, I was kneeboarding. But I haven't done that in freaking-forever. I gots a mild sunburn and my muscles are all achy. Not to mention we got our rope tangled up in the prop at one point, and I bashed my elbow pretty bad trying to keep us off the rocks (the wind and current were really stong). It still hurts when I put the slightest pressure on it. So the huggls slipped my mind when I got home. Sorries!

I actually had an excuse as to why I missed Random Hugs on Sunday, but it just slipped my mind, last night.  So, to make up (as I have done so many times before), 3 hugs are being given.   Charey, Nerikull, and SkipSandersget all get hugs.
