But isn't it what we've come to expect?  Lorenda and Kria are a little out of the ordinary, even for DMFA characters.  One wonders if Jyrras had anything to do with this development.  On the other hand, maybe Lorenda might ask him to help things, uhm, enlarge a bit (assuming she wants that, and you get the feeling that she does).

(Edited to add the strip number, as per convention. Convention enforced by the mods who have nothing better to do with their time, but convention nonetheless. :-] -- llearch )

If you expect the unexpected, then isn't it expected? (Or something like that.)

If Mr. Williams is trying to play "Loom", what system was it for/is he using?
Jeez I need to update this thing.

Wanderer

Amber, tell your husband to look for a program called Dosbox. Run a Google search, it should show up. Every old DOS game I've tried in it has been able to run perfectly. And I seem to recall a friend of mine specifically stating that she used it to play Loom, back when we found Loom available on an abandonware website...

Nino

Well, it's probably because Lorenda is not full demon. Personally I think they look okay at that size, and since they're apparently functionally useless, it might be easier not having huge wings to drag around.

4-9 hours per comic? Wow, no comment on that.

Tezkat

Yup... DOSBox.

Oh great... will "Best Patch! Wing Size Enlargement!" become Furrae's version of Cialis spam?  :mowtongue

There are a couple different versions of Dosbox.  Not like GNUMACS vs GOSMACS, but like Dosbox 0.28 vs Dosbox 0.29.  Some will work on one but not the other.  Don't get discouraged!  Usually, you'll only need one version, but you can probably install two side-by-side.

Actually, if it's LOOM, you might want to look at SCUMMVM.  Says Loom is 95% compatible.

*goes back to playing Darkseed*

WAIT... obDMFA: Did she get those wings from Abby Normal?

*Now goes back to playing Darkseed (well, not really)*

I have Dosbox 0.65, and I haven't had trouble yet. Of course, I haven't used it a lot yet either... I've been spending all my time playing newer games in recent months.

Yes, I heard it recommended too. Dosbox is just the thing I tend to suggest straight off.

Small hard to detect wings are an advantage, they can be hidden.  So when in 300 years someone tries to do you in as if you were a normal being they get a big surprise and you get in the last shot.   :doh

doesn't have that much to do with the current comic, but anyone else noticed Kria suffers from an ear growth syndrome similar to Jyrras'?

by the way, Freedos <link> can be a good choice, too, since DosBox tend to be SLOW. couple it with VirtualPC <link> if lazy to mess up with HD partitions

Her head is just at a funny angle which Mrs. Amber is probably unused to drawing.  I'm willing to cut her some slack, how about you?

Or you could buy an old 286 and MS-DOS 3.3 and try running it on that.  I assume that that is suboptimal, and that what they're really looking for is something that they can run without having to reboot every time they want to start/stop playing the game.

Seriously.  SCUMMVM.  It was designed to run this game.

I don't think it's just angle, I've been noticing it for quite a while, actually

that's why I pointed out VirtualPC lol

If ``For a while'' means sometime between 193 and 229.  Her ears at 229 are pretty much the same size we see in today's strip.

In fact, I retract my earlier statement of cutting Amber some slack.  She doesn't need any--Kria is on-model.

I thought you said that VirtualPC would mess up partitions if combined with Freedos.  Never having used either, I wouldn't know if that were true.

I thought it was kinda funny when Kria was thinking that another pull would get the wings into full size...

Art styles and character evolve over time.  It's one of the natural laws of comic evolution.

Opus the penguin from Bloom County / Outland has a beak that continuously expands and shrinks throughout the art cycle.

crud, I make an account just to mention ScummVM, and it's already been done...

oh well :rolleyes

...back to nowhere...

Nino

In Kria's cast page it says that she has larger than normal ears =P

Mashi

Funny, I was just there but I forgot why.

I don't know what Lorenda's so worried about. I think they're cute little wing-a-lings.

Vraptor140

I'm sure Kria's not the first to get that idea.  ;)

But I think Lorenda's wings are Ok like they came, she's half demon and it's easier to have small wing rater than large ones, specialy if you can't hide them at will.

Yay Young Frankenstein references!

Anyway, I think Lorie should dooooo eeeeet.  Afterall, she gets to look beautiful, Kria gets to test her theory, the store makes a sale, and we get an eye-full of Lorie+corset action.  Everybody wins!

The Loom thing: use http://www.scummvm.org/. It was designed to get old lucas-arts games working on modern computers. Loom is listed as 95% compatible, which is as good as it gets.

Hey hey.

Mason has tried the Scummvm program before...thats actually where his problems are coming from.  He managed to get it to "run", and some sounds work...but the sound seems to keep messing up.  I guess at certain parts of the game there are different notes and dialogue but oftentimes only one note will play followed by silence.

Illusionist

Is it wrong that I actually think Kria's suggestion is completely logical?

Odd. I "acquired" the cd version of the game with ScummVM and it runs perfectly.

Looking at the two comics you linked there, Kria's ears seem to be about the same size in proportion to her head (except for the first of the three panels in the older one) They're longer and pointier, but they're narrower too.  I would call it more of an evolution of the art style than it is spontanious ear growth.  (And, I might add, her ears aren't the only thing that's changed between her first and her most recent appearance, though they certainly are the most noticable change!)

I'd say it was a perfectly logical suggestion.

Doesn't mean it would work, but it's completely logical.

Try it again; ScummVm updates rather frequently.

Also, if you like Loom, you need to try Beneath a Steel Sky, now free. Yay.

Download, and get the 70MB version if you want the game to make any sense at all.

Tapewolf

Dammit, this will teach me to have a lie-in  :rolleyes

For Loom, use DOSbox.  That's how I play it these days, although I have the EGA version.
The hardest part will be setting it up to access the real PC's disk, and given its massive popularity I'd guess that they've covered it well enough in the documentation by now.

If he was able to play Loom back in the day, he should be able to set it up and run it in DOSbox no trouble.  And if not, there are people like me who grew up with DOS and were gutted when Windows came along  >:3

And I absolutely agree about 'Beneath A Steel Sky'.
(Still thinks a 2D point-and-click adventure would be the best videogame use of the DMFA concept)
