Title: 13/08/2010 [DMFA #1137] - Another cat stuck in a tree

All's fair in tabloid journalism?

Hey, she's got wings!

Chicki's gender has yet to be established. Besides, if he or she is anything like usual insects, those who go wandering around are either drones, immature females, or possibly mature males. The huge majority of bees, for example, are the "female" drones; ants are largely sexless (as distinct from genderless) drones, with the queens and males being just a handful out of a colony of hundreds of thousands of individuals.

Whatever Ambaarrgh has planned for them should be interesting, but making assumptions and getting ahead of ourselves will just make us look like fools...

And yes. Chicki has wings! (Hrmm. votes for immature female/male on the hunt...)

If Chicki gives Abel the camera, Abel can destroy the incriminating evidence unless she's already switched rolls of film or memory chips or whatever it uses.

I think people are assuming 'she' for convenience, like with Mink.

For some reason Abel's question in the last panel has me giggling like an idiot.  Taking the camera would be sensible, though.  Wing-tentacle time?

That's the beauty of it. The longer we assume Chicki is female, the greater the chance of an ebil surprise. Suddenly, Chicki is revealed as a male! Of course, now that her ebilness knows what we expect her to do ...  Ooh! Reverse reverse psychology!

Or, lacking the necessary technological knowledge, Abel destroys the camera, and leaves the wreckage (with memory chip intact) for Jyrras to find.

Hmmm. Here Abel is high up in a tree, wearing a mini-skirt, and Chicki is on the ground, holding a camera. A perfect upskirt opportunity!

On second thought, she's already got dozens of nude pictures of him.

I'd guess Chicki is female drone , mainly due to the whole fangirl thing.
Also, whoever assumed Mink is female out of convenience ??  :erk

Also, it will be fun if (or when?  >:3)  Jyrras catches him at home with the camera, coming from the tree- remember Kria using the same tree to spy on him? Maybe he does suspect something, though so far it's just in the "a stray cat" dimensions...

Is Abel afraid of insects?  Just wondering, because he didn't take kindly to those spiders.  I had been assuming his terror was related to being outed as a 'Cubi, but his insistence on calling Chicki "Scary bug thing" and climbing a tree is making me rethink that.

Exactly what llearch said, perfectly hug-able. It'll just take a bit of effort. Anyway; I'm perfectly sure a made up buggy thingy can sustain such interactions with its fellow bugs and comic goers, otherwise it'd be pretty boring.

Yeah, when the common name for something is "tree asp", you might not wanna touch it.
'Specially if you name starts with "Cleo".

Also, how do you guys imagine Chicki's voice? In my head, it's kinda high, with an almost mechanical tone. A bit like:
"I ahm A rEE-port-errr. I tAYch the pick-tuuurrrz."

In case you don't recall, some cameras had a glass window on the back so you could see the film, which usually had a counter on it to show you how many were left.

Admittedly not SLRs, which is the sort of thing a pro would carry around, though. ;-]

Actually, my old SLRs have a little holder where you put the end of the film box as a reminder, like this:

But Chicki's camera is definitely not an old-school SLR. Could possibly be a compact, but most probably a modern digital.

I think it's a "camera".

I know that sounds a bit silly, but I really don't think Amber took the time to consider the insides of something as small as a camera.
For all we know, it runs on magic and it has a little picture imp in it.

I think here you are doubting the great mind that is Amber.. Von.. Amber Amberstein.

Clearly the intricacies of the thing you call a 'Camera' have been worked out to the most minute details. I fear I must report the camera really is an elder being from another universe, whose name I dare not pronounce in fear and awe of it's majesty, this camera, so evil. So well crafted from the bones of a god. That it has entire galaxies inside it. worlds with in worlds inside of it, those poor, helpless planets act as film, recording the lives of those caught with in its glass eye stare of doooom. Capturing their soooouls. Forced imprints onto the poor, helpless beings that must live on these slave planets. Living out mock lives of these 'fake souls' force onto them. Oh yes, this is no mere ordinary mortal camera. It is a plot so great, so foul. That even the strongest of beings will have their wills broken like sweet, sweet candy glass at the reveal of the twist.

OH THE HORRORS IN STORE FOR POOR BLACK AND WHITE COOKIE DUDE WITH WINGS.

Anyhoo, time for wild and woolly speculation.

Abel will probably take the camera. He doesn't know how to erase the pictures, and he doesn't want to take any pictures. And since he doesn't want to be caught with the camera, he hides it somewhere in Jyrras' house.

So, who will find it later? I'd guess Deebs or Lorenda.

Jyrras: You're spying on me?
Abel: No, I can prove that this isn't my camera, it's got naked pictures of me on it!
Jyrras: ...what?

...Awwwwkwarrrrrd...

... Amber von Amberstein ?

Dude, that's crazy!
Nay, Amber von Amber Amberstein!
...
Okay, that is a bit much.

My guess is that
A: Abel leaves the camera, gets ambushed upon exit.
Or
B: Leaves camera, Chicki finds a way inside.

Also: Cicadas are crazy loud! If the Insectis spoke like that, I would run too!

I made this prediction before, but I think Chiki's an agent from the magical council/Aniz. That, or Jyrras(or Dan. Think about it) gets the camera, and hilarity happens.

Why does everyone think she is evil, maybe she is just a cute bug lassy. A cute, huggable lassy bug who is lovely and curious and just needs friends for her hive mind (and hugs)

... friends for her hive mind ...

Ok, that's pretty freaky.  :D

Mind you, the real world is even stranger.
I once read that a jumping spider has to pull it's mandiblbes trough it's brain, when it molts !!
I don't think even Chicki does that.

I think you are right on the money with the hugs tho. :)

Maybe people think things would be more interesting if she were actually a cog in a diabolical master plan. Also, she's a bug. Who are people more likely to empathize with and trust? A buggy critter, or a fluffy fur?

That said, I'm with you on this one. I could use a friend like Chicki; she'd balance out my cynicism :3

Hello.  This is Draken, founder of the Hugs for Bugs Foundation.

For centuries, bugs of good makings have been given undue hatred and scorn, even those of a cute and ultimately huggable variety.  Our foundation is made so that those who deserve a nice long hug in response to such unwarrented abuse are given freely.

Like poor Chicki here.

She has just come up into the world, and already people are thinking the worst of her.  Accusing her of being a murderous cubi in disguise.  Or a pawn in some evil plot, some theorizing by a chess-master fey.

All she wants to do is see the world and bask in it's wonders.  She is in desperate need of a hug.

So please.  Help our foundation by hugging the nearest love-needing bug you can.  As many times as you can.  They have feelings too you know.

*Cue cheesy charity music*

I believe that Amber was talking about every other day:  Friday, Sunday, Tuesday.

However, let's avoid bugging Amber about when the bug will next buzz into view.  Remember the words of General W. R. Monger:  If I'm not there on time, it'll be because I'm dead, or late.

And for the nit-pickers out there, I do know that insects are not true bugs.

When I started reading the official schedule was Mon/Wed/Fri.  Then Abel's Story started and it became Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat (or was it Sunday?).

Then she married Mason and to fit in with his job, it became Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun (I believe).
Now it's shifted again and with the close of Abel's Story, the official update schedule is Fri/Sun/Tue (as per the website - the more I wrote about this the less sure I became...)

The comic updates... when you least expect it. BWAHAHAHAHA!  :veryevil

I need to work on my evil laugh.

Theatrics can cover that up. Who would nitpick a laugh, while fire spews from the ground, thunder strikes, all becomes dark, and eerie shadows are cast on your face.

Me too.

Though I'd nitpick that it couldn't be very dark with both fire from the ground and thunder from above.
And why does he have to play dodgeball with shadows ?
Don't cast shadows at him, shoot him instead - He's obviously evil ! :D

Not bad. It is the kind of laugh one gives while gloating at the heros over a cup of tea. Me? I prefer mine in a deeper tone with more reverb in the throat. The kind of laugh one gives in the lab while conducting experiments that perverts the laws of God and Man. Like chicken, pinapple, and pickle pizza! Buahahahahaha! (Actually, it isn't half bad, but in the future I think I'll save the pickles for bacon cheeseburger pizzas.)

"Despite its proven stress-relieving effect, I will not indulge in maniacal (evil) laughter. When so occupied, it's too easy to miss unexpected developments that a more attentive individual could adjust to accordingly. " That's what comes to mind when I read these few last posts.
