well... after going through a lot of different things this summer, i got my muse back a few weeks ago, and started doing some sketches... all of them need to be scanned once i get a new one (scanner died finally). For now, i've got one of several sketches i've got waiting to be posted, as it looks alright when viewed from the digital camera picture... but really it all needs to be scanned...
anyways... I give to you a finished sketch of Bas, my "fur-sona" as well as my Character for the Mad God's Masque RP
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/Bassketch-1.jpg)
So Bas is really a demon dog :mowsmile I like how the head came out, you do need, however, to work on the arms- they seem attached to him like a doll's hands would be. Another thing are his hands(fists)- they are too small. Still, not bad.
heh, the main focus was on the head... the rest was more secondary placeholder until i worked up the muse to finish it . the head took about 30-40 minutes, the rest took about 15... as such... i'll be updating when i truly finish it...
Ooooo, nice ^_^ His dark eyes sort of scare me though >_<. And yeah.. pictures of art just plain suck, hopefully you'll get a scanner soon!
I'm not quite sure what's happening with the eyes there. Aside from that I think it's only really the arms that spoil it.
after buying a new scanner on sunday, i've started scanning my sketches in, here's a redone version of Bas, without the blur you get from a camera... Again, this was primarily for the face... which i've been working on for a while... and the rest will be finished at a later date...
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/scan0003.jpg
Here was a sketch which tech requested a few weeks ago... he wanted to see if someone could sketch a war forge... it gave me a bit of problems as i've got a horrible case of artistic ADD, where i'll be midway through a sketch, then suddenly be inspired to do something else... and thus... the first piece is forgotten for a bit, and when i come back... well, it never finishes quite right... after 3 tries, this is what i came up with... and i'll be finishing up the final one later, once i can figure out why the hands aren't coming out right...
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/scan0004.jpg
That war thing almost looks cute :mowmeep Now on a serious note- the hands. The reason they seem detached in both pics is because you are drawing them separately from the torso, meaning the chest should not be a straight barrel to which you attach the hands as on a doll, but it should curve out and into the shoulder and pits.
(http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/3985/armdetail.th.jpg) (http://img505.imageshack.us/i/armdetail.jpg/)
The chest and shoulders should both form the torso barrel, like an inverted cone, this way the shoulders won't stick out as unnatural as they are now.

I'm trying to give you some advice here, though I know from my own experience, that the problems you're having now will smooth out quite quickly with practice. You have a good foundation on which to build on, so in time you will perfect it.
Thanks, bassy! And Kipiru's right; it does look sort of cute. To me, it seems almost like something you'd find in a children's cartoon, with a goofy grin like that :P
Ah, but that's because no one expects a grin like that before it's metal fist punches you in the face....
Also, yea, it's one of the things i was working on... the war-forge looked a little off... but looking at the references, it's humanoid, but not quite human... as for Bas, it's more an issue of not taking the proper time to setup the body correctly... either way, thanks for the advice kip, and i'll keep that in mind.
Going back further, i noticed many people commenting on the almost black eyes... Bas himself has brilliant, solid dark blue eyes. Think something akin to Regina's only in a deep royal blue, almost falling into the range of navy.

It was more that one of them was black and dog-shaped, and the other one was white and saucer-like.
Now that I look at the scanned version, I can see that the large, white eye is actually his cheek...

Something i re-did during today's on and off rain...
The head is a bit too big , but at least the hands(shoulders in particular) are alright.
Is she yawning?
yes, yes she is indeed Tape...
XP... it's something that i haven't seen yet, and it changes Keaton (the character) from a psychotic, yet attractive killer, into something far cuter... the curling tongue was surprisingly hard to get right... which is part of the reason the head is just a smidgen too big...

Actually, the hands are too small. For consideration:
- The hand is as long as your head is wide, or half as long as the chest is wide.
- If you took the distance from the corner of the elbow to the tip of the fingers, the hand would take up 2/5ths of that length.
-The hand is twice long as it is wide.
Aside from that though, I have to agree with Kipiru. The anatomy on the shoulder looks much more accurate, and it gives a real sense of depth.

Something i did for Zina for the CCC, the hands didn't come out right, and i'll be submitting an updated one to her once i get my drawing muse back on track...
For those who don't know, the character is Dorian, he's a llama and was a rather interesting challenge to draw... hope you like Zina...
Sorry for the long delay here, but, as of late, i've been on a major art kick, and as such, i'm taking requests for a few sketches if anyone is interested :3
Oooo!! Do you think you could draw Chance? =) I'd like to see your take on her ^_^
*raises hand*
I'd be interested in a rendition of Dorcan if you're up for it and have a free slot. I can provide references.
Alright... i'll start with 3 slots, and as things get done, i'll open more up... :3
1: Wuff: Chance
2: Boxy: WITT
3: Tape: Dorcan
4: Cog: Giles (which some references would be awesome)

You count gudgud. ;-]
Cog made a request earlier, so i figured i'd throw it up there... once i finish with WITT, i'll take more... :D
alright, my scanner is being a total B**** right now... i finished with Wuff's Chance and Boxy's WITT, if i can't get it working in the next little bit, I'll be giving up for today and try again later when i have more patience... I'll have them posted Saturday at the latest... As is, i now have room for 1 or 2 more requests if there are any takers :3
Tapewolf: Dorcan
Cogi: Giles

appologies for the triple post,
Boxy's WITT

Tapewolf's Dorcan (sorry that i had a little fun with the shapeshifting... i kept going back to the "dorcan on a bender page, and re-imagining it if he'd had shapeshifting abilities... and thus... this is what i came up with)
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/Dorcanwicked.jpg
i now have 2 open slots for sketch requests if anyone is interested

Heh. That would explain the razor-sharp hands, then. It's a pretty good likeness, attitude notwithstanding. Critique-wise, there are two things that strike me.
Firstly the picture itself is kind of angular (the abs especially are a little squared-off). Secondly, the proportions of the headwings and the tail are a little out.
Anyway, thanks for doing that, I hope it helped you.
hehe, thanks for the request, i noticed a few things that seemed off and i'll probably go out and fix them this weekend when i've got time :3
As is, i hope you enjoy your sketch
Oh, I do. Thanks heaps.
As it goes, I have an open slot at the moment...

Is it just me who's tempted to put tab A in slot B?

Bahahahahahahaa!
I hate you both... sooo sooo much... *facepalm* and boxy, how could you be so mean after i sketched WITT for you?! D:
It's easy, Bas. I just step out there and do it. ;-]
It's like sex. It's easier after you fall off the bicycle.
haven't updated in a while...

Ed, my cubi character from The City... seems he is being lazy

Filler sketch of Kassin for The1Kobra, i'm still trying to find a post that works with him... sorry for the delay :/

Just a quick sketch i did while being bored and trying to study, took about 30 minutes or so :3
turned out pretty good, and i plan to fix this one up as the head is a bit too small
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/Edaric.jpg
Somewhat NSFW due to violence...
Anyways, this is something i started the other day out of a strange mental image in class... which has now turned into a Halloween themed picture. For those of you who've followed the RP The City, you'll know Ed is rather absent-minded, comes off as rather charming from first impressions, but is actually quite the brutal fighter...
The image came out a little creepy, and quite brutal (sorry if i offend anyone, the victim is intentionally nondescript)... I'm looking for critiques on the poses, anatomy, and things of that nature... anyways, this is the work in progress... i'll post an updated one after inking, and possibly coloring (dear gawd i hope not D:)

Sorry, Bas, I am unqualified to offer critique on art. However, I am interested to see the final result.
My main reason for posting is your statement quoted above got me very curious as to what class were you attending, and what was going on in that class to give you such a mental image? :U
It's pretty rough and anatomy needs a bit of a brush up. You have the arms done really well but the legs feel like they need a bit of a muscle tone to them, even though they are wearing pants. Keep working on the anatomy of the head, study off some pictures until you got them down. : D

Pft. This shouldn't bother any
real artist >:3 . Once you see renaissance anatomy studies (Da Vinchi "in vitro" work, for one), nothing will get to you.
Anatomy can be a real pain. Proportions aren't so bad because you can just study the numbers, but getting into anatomy means studying how something actually looks which is a lot more information to absorb. Honestly, (IMHO) anyone who is going to study anatomy
needs to work with real life reference.
The general proportions aren't bad, actually. Most of Ed's torso looks good, in terms of relative measurements (Width of the shoudlers vs. the head, length of the arms, and the size of the torso vs. the head). The anatomy is alright in places too; particularly the shoulder, biceps, traps, and neck. The hands look like they're the right size, just a little shy on the detail... which is also a matter of anatomy. Same goes for the eyes and muzzles/noses. The eyes have a sort of "Egyptian Hieroglyphics" look to them.
The things that look off seem to be mostly from one of two things: Gaps in the anatomy, or the angle at which things are drawn from.
Ed's left shoulder looks off since it's so far forward. At that angle, the shoulder is usually mostly behind the chest.
Ed's right leg looks uncomfortable, probably because of how the foot is turned.
A forearm usually has most of it's muscle mass close to the elbow, and tapers to about half way to the wrist. The wrist is usually about half as thick as the widest point of the forearm, but this can vary depending on how muscled the person is. Also, the wrist is wider then it is deep, so that measurement can change depending on pose as well. (The victim's forearm muscle looks like it's in hte middle of the forearm, and Ed's lower forearm don't really seem to taper at all.)
Ed's hips seem like they should have more mass to them. Might just be me, though.
We don't see much of the victim's ribcage or pectoral muscles, and one of his legs looks longer then the other.

I'll second that. Most effective kind of practice there is in art.
Thanks for the advice Whitefox :) i've gone and tried to adjust some of the things you've mentioned without completely starting from scratch.

The updated version
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/EdClose-up.jpg
this one popped up while trying to practice for a face/head...

This was something that popped up out of seemingly nowhere, muse hit me and i went with it
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/BasandAleyna.jpg
As did this one... which... ironically, came the day after i re-did the Ed sketch...
I'm 90% certain my muse is insane... but, i'll let you be the judge of that
The Ed pic looks much improved.
Looking at the Close Up, there's a few things I could mention about eyes that might be useful. Bearing in mind that most of these guidelines don't apply to manga art styles, nor animals. This doesn't really cover how eyes look from different directions, either.
(Two very quick-and-dirty diagrams later...)
Proportions:
(http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/diagram/eyes.jpg) | 1: Devide the width of the head into quarters, then eighths. 2: Draw two circles. They'll be 1/4 of a head wide, and centered on the quarter marks. 3: Two more circles, for the iris (color) and pupil of the eye, which will be 1/2 the width of the eye overall. 4: Add eyelids. 5: Clean up.
(Some guides say to divide the head into fifths, but I find that nearly impossible to do accurately, and it leaves too much space between the outer corner and the side of the head.) |
Anatomy:
(http://www.northernelectric.ca/~whitefox/images/diagram/eyes2.jpg) | 1: the upper eyelid rests just on top of the pupil. This is key when making them looked relaxed! 2: The lower eyelid is almost always relaxed, and usually meets the bottom edge of the corona. If the eye is looking upwards, or the head is tilted forward, there will usually be some white underneath. 3: The upper eyelid is not usually one smooth arc, unlike the lower. It will usually "peak" closer to the inside corner of the eye. I find the peak, on average, lines up with the inside edge of the corona.
Dotted lines compare the width of the iris to the overall width of the eye. |
(Whee! I figured out how to put tables into a post.)
In the Victory pic, Bas' head and the hand holding the shield look a bit small.
I like the poses in the Aleyna pic, and his feet look good considering the angle they're drawn in.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/BasAleynaCuddles.jpg
Went and did this not too long ago, it's still quite rough, but figured i'd put it up now, seeing as it'll be a little while before it's worked on... Also, beware the adorable :B
So... starting with a little story here... on MSN, our good friend, and one of our favorite vixens, Gabi, often times has connection issues. Melody, Aish, Keaton and myself often find ourselves 'fishing' gabi back it. This produced a silly mental image this week, which because this rather quick sketch

Next up, a conversation with Cog, from his RP... the Mad God's Masque.
"How would one challenge a tri-wing to begin with?"
*long and drawn out conversation of various ways one might try and confront such a powerful force*
Cog:"So... how would Baseel fight a tri-wing"
Me: "Uh..... Sucker-punch and RUN! no need to stand around to see if it actually worked..."

(appologies to Azlan, as it's more a joke than anything. Kiet's face is rather generic... in the future i'll send some proper gift art your way)
Something keaton and i discussed of our respective characters squaring off for a duel... it came out pretty well, thought i'd share the latest update.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e268/EWork88/BasVsKeatsUpdate.jpg
This one i noticed a few things off compared to the original... it is now quite obvious the pair are both demons... and they're still lookin' adorable. :B

(I'm fixing Pal's request up with a few minor things, it'll be posted some time tomorrow)
Nice. I am thinking that your canine muzzles are rather too long and pointy, though. It me it makes them look a bit like kangaroos or something.
heh, it's been something i've been working on, yes... i agree, and i think it doesn't help that the muzzles are a bit too narrow as well... but yes, thanks for pointing that out Tape :3
Some of the noses look, to me, like they're not quite at the same angle as the head. As though they're turned more towards the camera then the rest of the face is.
The thing that strikes me about the faces, though, is that the forehead seamlessly blends into the bridge of the nose. There isn't any suggestion of the brow, or the bridge of the nose.
I hope this doesn't turn into as big a discussion as it was in my thread, but the shape of the bewbs look off. Smaller bust lines don't sag very much.
The torsos of the characters look really square, like the spine is stiff (I might have mentioned this before). It's most notable in BasVsKeats and Suckerpunch.
In Fishing, the wing lacks a distinct bicep and forearm. Wings are always a pain, but I thought I'd mention it. It's a cute scene, tho.
In Bas+Aleyna, her arm looks reeeally long.
Other then that... Nice work all around. Suckerpunch got a chuckle out of me, as well as Fishing, and the facial expressions in Bas+Aleyna are very sweet. The ends of the noses are looking better all around (though they do look kinda long).
