Title: #1000's Fan Picture Final/done on the 1st post
Post by: Prof B Hunnydew on January 27, 2009, 07:38:10 PM
Now, this is a thread to come up for something special for Amber for page 1000.  I've watch and read DMFA a long time and every time a "mile stone" comic comes and it goes with Amber drawing a blank. (on what to do.)

So, this time, We, the Fans, could try to help out,
And think of something good, and maybe have a Guest Comic Artist to help her out.

Any ideas, ....
We have some 30 comics or 10 weeks, before we need it.  But hey, it is better that last minute.

(await of course let us roll the main character first).

Okay Rolling the cast to artist matches......

We could have a groupshot of the gang.  Preferably a funny pose one.  I can just see Abel looking irritated, Mab being distracted by something shiny, Dan trying for a sexy pose (or being chased by Pip), stuff like that.

I ahve an idea, we should make a comic for Amber to celebrate comic #1000

fair is fair, after all. (except, you know, it should be someone or someones with talent who makes it, which leaves me out >:3 )

Come up with a one-shot, have everyone draw one panel?
Title: Re: DMFA #1000 special
Post by: Reese Tora on January 28, 2009, 03:02:50 AM
Yeah, something like that.  It's be a lot of effort, though, and someone would need to take charge, get it written, get each of the artists a panel, merge the panels, and so on... or it could be drawn similar to the Comic improv game, where each artists is given a turn to make a panel one after another... but if someone flakes that could be a problem, and it would be harder to keep the finished comic secret from Amber...
Title: Re: DMFA #1000 special
Post by: Jairus on January 28, 2009, 03:09:49 AM
Or it could simply be a celebration not of the comic and its characters, but of the comic's creator. Which I think is a little more appropriate, given the circumstances. Maybe the characters applauding or congratulating Amber, something like that. A bit cheesy, and I have no idea how to arrange it or set it up, but that's what I'd do. I know I'm planning to do something that day.

comic 1000 ideas

Amber announces dmfa will be an animated series with collectible card game
Amber announces she is with spawn, which shall be released upon the world at a later date
Amber announces she hates us all and wishes we would shut up and die
Amber announces the dmfa video game, rated mature
Amber announces her candidacy for emperor of the newly formed unified atlantic empire
Amber announces she has talent cancer and her talent has to be removed, thus ending the comic
Amber announces dmfa is over, heres some other comic based around turtles and psychotic women who think slaughtering people on the street is normal, which seems to be an underlying theme with Amber and should probably raise a little red flag somewhere

I think a good idea for comic #1000 would be definately for the fans to do something special for Amber, instead of Amber having to do some massive group shot after all the stress she's been through. Amber definately deserves a break, a real break, not a OMG PAPERWORK break because they just stress her out more. My pitch I suppose would be that the fans each draw a little something and someone could put it all together for her somehow. Yay ambiguous!

Post by: Prof B Hunnydew on January 28, 2009, 08:55:35 AM
Of course, this is something for us, Fans to do.... Amber doesn't need to do it.   As for a chairperson, or collector of panels... I could do it...(oh no what have I started. now)

:mowdizzy

a large group shot would be good, or a small comic page(s) with a panel per artist.... but I want to have ideas/writers from others for some of this.  That way, everyone has some input and maybe a poll on the final pieces.

Amber can still do her comic..but this something from the fans...As for Amber not knowing about this ..that is too late.  But the planning could be move to one of the other forums with PMs to the artists once a idea is flesh out.

Okay, so a collaborative effort. Either a group shot or a extended comic.
It could either include DMFA characters (+Amber & Fluffy) or characters based on us, or both.
General objective is to celebrate and support Amber and the great work she does.

You know, it occurs to me that if we discuss it here, Amber can easily find out all about it. (Can Admins hide posts from all but one person, even if that person is an Admin?)

You can ban a person from a specific section.  I really, really don't know if it works on moderators, though.

In a word, no.

Many things are possible if one is devious enough.  You would have to create a fake topic.  This fake topic would then be matched with a real topic.  The PHP for the pages would be modified so that attempts to access the topic will display information from the false topic if the user is logged in and the user is not Amber Williams.  Amber Williams and guests would then see the real topic if they looked at the site and would be unaware of the fake topic.

You would also have to insure that creating or modifying messages for the fake topic will not affect the statistics shown on the index of topics.  There might also be a requirement to modify the code for searches.

If Amber accesses the site via PHP or WebDAV, those packages would also have to be modified to hide the changes.

A far simpler approach would be to carry out coordination efforts for the project on another bulletin board system for which Amber is not an administrator.  Messages could also be passed by PM (private message).  Although it may be possible for administrators to access such messages, they would probably not be aware of such messages unless they were looking for abnormal behavior.  Since we are all abnormal, the information would be lost in the noise.

Actually, I was envisioning a page where Fluffy takes a big stick to all the people telling Amber what she should do on *** her *** website.  Planning of such a page could be carried out using a Yahoo group having a relatively innocuous name.

Now if somebody wants to create and administer a FriendsOfAmber deviantart page, we could send the owner of the page various pieces of art expressing our appreciation and love of Amber.  Ownership of the page could then be shifted to Amber's hubby.

It's the thought that counts. Just look at Ambers first few comic-pages and think what would have happened if she had given up back then.
Only practice will lead to better skills. Take this opportunity to get some.

Okay, It seems we have many votes for a large group shot or maybe a just Fan-art...of the cast.  I would think that we should keep forumites characters out of it. or just in the backgrounds.  Main cast members to the recurring cameo members in the comic, would be best with Amber and Fluffy.  Anyone who has been in the comic is fair game.

Any idea's where an group picture(S) should be....?

On the shores of Lost Lake.

By the sea.

The Theater... with Amber and Fluffy on stage.

Heaven

With a group shot you can pick a theme and a character, put each person's piece into a group setting.  We would have to agree on a theme, so everyone's character would fix the right in with right clothes and acts and moods

I would suggest not necessarily having a background as it would be hard to get everyone to draw a background that 'fits' with what others have drawn.  Not to mention doing a group shot with multiple artists seems, to me, kinda hard to pull off (however I will be the first to say I'm inexperienced in such things so if anyone has an idea on how it can be done, by all means).

The idea I had (and feel free to shoot it down obviously) was to generate a list of themes and a list of characters and artists.

One theme would be selected and then each artist would be randomly assigned a character.  They would then attempt to draw their version of the character in the context of the theme.

It should be noted that the theme decision and character assignments would be pm'ed out, so as to maintain some degree of surprise.

That was just one idea though.  If anyone can explain to me how to do a drawing that would fit into some collaborative group shot I'll be happy to try and contribute any character you like.

... mao, you suggested the same idea i had... either that, or do the background as a different layer, and have someone more skilled than i with photoshop then do a cutout of the character in question, and proportion them somewhere in the picture...

I'm voting for Mao's suggestion, as mine would require a lot more work...

...i'd say the beach would be pretty cool, as people involved could play around with the characters a bit more than in a usual setting, mess around with different props that don't normally show up in the comic, different clothing and overall, just have fun messing around with poses, since people tend to be goofier at the beach... but, since you seem to want to do the background, i'll leave the choice up to you... just let me know who i'm doing, and like mao said, size and resolution would help as well (i know you can resize, but sometimes distorts the image)

If we're going to consider Ink as done, for the sake of continuity I'd say we consider Drawing the cast in Disgaea Themed outfits.  I would suggest not doing outfits based off of the main characters, but rather as the units, unless we all want to agree on which chars get which outfits.

Have you considered that some people have no clue what Disgaea even is?

EDIT:
Or that basing stuff off what is probably a commercial venture might not be the best idea?

Indeed I have... but given that the internet has lovely things like search engines, I didn't think that people would have too much trouble with it, Tape. ;-)

Any particular reason why basing it off of characters from a game is a bad idea?  Fan-art, last I checked wasn't a crime.

It's giving me trouble.  Nothing I have found so far, not wikipedia nor the official site (which seems to be extremely crappy and broken) has given me sufficient material to work from.
A simple list of what the characters are and what they look like is proving surprisingly difficult to obtain.

If you'd like to contribute an other idea, I'm all ears.  I'm merely offering suggestions here.

The other point is that the readers of the thing might not know what Disgaea is, or have any inclination to find out.  DMFA readers are a subset of all humanity - DMFA readers who have played Disgaea/Deus Ex/Imogen/Monty On The Run make up still smaller subsets.
Maybe I missed something and Amber's a big fan of the thing - if the project is targeted at her and her alone it might be okay, but I was assuming you were thinking of a greater audience as a show of appreciation.  But if she's never played it either...?

Anyway, alternate suggestions.
Firstly, just a simple gathering of all the characters.  A few years ago there was a collaborative bar scene picture which mixed DMFA and fan characters.  I'll dig it up if you're curious.  Something like that with a beach setting seems like a sensible idea and has no external dependencies.

Alternatively, assembling an actual comic.  This would take some effort as there would be writing involved and a certain amount of effort to get the 'DMFA feel' right.

Does that help?

I'm sorry Mao, but the whole Disgaea thing doesn't work with me either- never even heard of it and have no desire to comb through the net to search for pictures of it! As for the comic idea, maybe there is a way to do it. We could agree on a simple story from a writer and then have a rudimentary storyboard done. Afterwards the artists, already assigned characters, draw the poses in sync with the storyboard. It won't be perfect, but it will be unique.
Title: Re: DMFA #1000 special
Post by: Sunblink on January 31, 2009, 07:15:47 PM
I'll be honest: I don't think a Disagea theme will work, if only because it just sounds like fanservice intended for people who happen to be fans of both Disagea and DMFA, not a celebratory image. Sure, it'd be great to those who recognize the iconic uniforms and whatnot, but for everyone else it'd just be the DMFA cast standing around in some fancy clothes.

Besides, if this is going to be a gift for Amber, we'd need to make sure if she even likes Disagea first.

In case I wasn't clear, I'm totally down for helping Amber in any way.
My medium of choice is pencil on paper (unless you want to delve into my horrific past of sprite editing) but I'm not the best. Recently I've been having a hard time getting a handle on my skill recently unless I have a direct reference to work on (such as copying by sight).

It was a running theme on my gallery. And Mab just happened to fit Flonne's personality so perfectly; it was not intended to start a theme/continuity in the special art you people have to do. The point of this was to show appreciation to Amber, and I wanted to do it in a way I know how. I didn't want to wait for a specific milestone to say 'Hey, I like how you draw this comic, keep it up!'. Besides, she needed cheering up at the time.

(And just so you know, I've never even heard of Strawberry Shortcake at the time she draw me that picture. If she doesn't know Disgaea, then I've at least shared something. Heh.)

You are free to ask of me for another, you realize. After you've all decided and convinced each other on a specific who, what, when, where and how. You people have great ideas, I'm sure you don't really need my input.

Okay Okay

I was hoping that we could try and keep in the Amber-ish style, since this is to DMFA... Disgaea-ish  is too manga-ish for some people to copy.... Why can't we try to stay in our own styles?  I would be the only one who would ask anyone to try to do any character from one artist and do that character on another artist's style... That is insanity, but wait where am I...Oh yeah, Lost Lake Inn.

Okay, a random lottery like Zina Cat secret Santa.... We can try to marry up artist with characters.. I will PM which character goes to which Artist....and maybe I can get some other "fans" to add ideas to the artists.

The Beach idea is good... But we could do Fairyland, too.
There, you can do anything.

From this point, If you want in as an artist or a "writer"... Please post or post again.  I will post on the first post, who is in and PM their main character to them.
The writers can give ideas to artists,  A Writer could post ideas for any characters, they want, but the artist decide what idea can do once they get their "secret" character.  PMed me If you have trouble with a idea or character.

The Character Lottery will be on Feb 14th. and That will close the writers' ideas and the artists entries.

Badminton: Matilda / Dan
Volleyball: Wildy + Pyroduck vs. Biggs + Destania

I like that arrangement Tiger- I could get down to making a sort of a mock up of the complete picture- sort of a one panel storyboard for artists to check their assigned char's position and overall posture! If noone has a problem with me doing it of course!

Note: Anyone who has a vision of the arrangement as well- put it into a rough sketch and present it, so a choice can be made. Otherwise we go with the one I present.

@ Kipiru:
You go ahead - I'd say.
It's always good to have a concept sketch.

Fi and the Basement rats could be eating icecream.
Some of them could play Boules.. like: Abel / Merlitz / Azlan
Amber-wiku-worm sitting on a palm tree (disguising as a leaf) and
Fluffy hanging on a branch of said palm (hiding a-la coconut)
Family Soulstealer burrying DP in the sand... :P
Did I miss anyone?

Any other suggestions?
On the Cast page there are:

Dan
Mab

Pip
Jyrras
Lorenda
Wildy

Alexi
Abel
Pyroduck
Azlan
Fi

Kria
Biggs
The Basement Rats
Matilda
Dark Pegasus
Merlitz
Aliyka
Regina
Aaryanna

Fluffy

Regretably I think it is. So I take it for now we are going with Tiger_T' s layout of the beach scene- I'm starting work on the storyboard picture, which will help artists see the overall pose and position of the characters they have to draw. If anyone else thinks they can do this- then go ahead and we will eventually choose one of those. But be quick about it, so the artists can get to drawing as soon as possible.

NOTE: Sorry if I'm beginning to sound too bossy, but I'd really like to see this project done in time.

Jyrras could be building a sand castle (techno-style with a crane and everything) - and Deathbringer could play queen on one of its towers (with crown/fancy dress/etc :rolleyes)
Badminton: Matilda / Dan
Volleyball: Wildy + Pyroduck vs. Biggs + Destania
Sunbathing: Mab / Alexi
Pip: Chasing seagulls
...to give just a few suggestions

Let's not wait too long with assigning.
At the current pace it's just ~ 7 more weeks.
Nice, but how/where does a crane fit on a castle? *Pictures Jouster standing on top of a tower.*

Building it using a tower crane is what I meant. [one of these] (http://images.google.de/images?hl=de&ei=8-CaSefnIouc0AWt6sy5Ag&resnum=0&q=tower%20crane&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi) :P ;)
But since he's building a sand castle, it should probably just be a toy-crane. :3

LOL at the mental picture of Jouster playing crane. :giggle

It doesn't have to be ON the sand castle, but somewhere near it. It doesn't even have to be a crane- a robotic arm is another way to go. Imagine Jyrras remotecontrolling a robotic arm holding a bucket of sand.

i can honestly say that either way you do it, i doubt i'll be able to help... my assigned character is already going to be giving me a hard time getting it just right...

i'd say, put her on the wildcard list and if someone wants to take up the challenge, then they can... if not, i don't think it'd hurt the collaboration too much if she wasn't included

Sorry for the bad quality, but I'm scanner deprived right now and didn't want to stall these any longer.
These two pictures are the unofficial START sign of this project- all you artist, this is your sign to get to drawing!
Note that the images in the pictures are only for overall clearance of what one's character should be doing when the artist draws him. The poses are not mandatory! You can come up with your own way of drawing them but have in mind the activities they are depicted here as participating in! Example: I drew Wildy jumping to strike the ball in the face of Biggs, that does not mean that whoever has Wildy to draw should make her in the same pose, but he should make her playing volleyball!
Here is a list of the characters in the pics:
page 1
1. Jyrras
2. Deebs
3. Dan
4. Mab
5. Alexi
6. Lorenda
7. Kria
8. Dark Pegasus
9. Matilda
10. Pyroduck
11. Wildy
12. Biggs
13. Destania
page 2
14. Abel
15. Merlitz
16. Azlan
17. The Basement Rats
18. Fi
19. Pip
20. Fluffy
21. Wiku Amber

I hope this helps- now on to drawing, try to get the art done as quickly as possible so the Prof could splice the whole thing together in time!

Right, I did forget her...or did I  >:3. My bad- whoever's got Regina must think up a beach activity for her- she could be all gloomy selling hot dogs or splashing around in the sea. There is also Fa'lina that I missed drawing, but I already have something in mind for her and I'm just waiting under the Prof's orders to see if anyone else would like to draw her. So far I haven't noticed anyone with such aspirations so I'm taking Fa'lina as mine. If anyone has objections to that- please say so.

I actually sent a PM to the Prof, offering to double up and do Fa'Lina as well. For what it's worth to mention.

Those drawings do indeed look very cool. Pyroduck giving Wildy a boost so she can smack Biggs upside the head? Fun. Mind if I change the pse a little, though? So it looks more... boost-y? Then again I might just leave it at that.
So how do we get our bits to the Prof when we're done? Image hosting site and PM? If so, which.
Don't laugh. I know I'm an idiot.

Not in the slightest, that is a good question. Yes, send your finished works to the Prof through PM. We are not going for any kind of secrecy here, like the Secret Santa project for instance, but it will be fun to see the pics for the first time once assembled. And something I think we neglected to mention- drawings must be in color and properly scanned! Don't fear if you aren't good with color- even basic flat colors without shading will do.

Okay I am going to set a date, and it is a goal, I need some time to combine everything and clean it up.  But this should get anyone some time if they are running late.

So the Date is MARCH 31 2009

This should be a good point, and with Amber's RL problems and all..we will enough time   Even If she goes and crank out 5 DMFA a week... we have about 5 weeks left....

Colors should be Amber's character's colors scheme.  and flat colors are Better then with shading...I will have to match the light source (the sun) for every character in combine picture.

Any question or comments?

The Prof is right- if possible send flat color images so we won't  have trouble with the light source. Later if you wish you can post the fully shaded version of you drawing in the Art thread.

Hmm... perhaps you could just let us know where the light source is going to be so we can shade appropriately? It's an outdoor scene, after all... the light is going to be the same for everyone.

soo, update for me: thanks to Tapewolf's help i finished up the project, the compy is completely salvageable thanks to backing up most of my files and settings on an external drive... though i had to re-format the hard-drive on the computer itself.

Long story short, after a few hours of chanting "i'm going to break you... you have no idea compy, one day while your in sleep mode..." and following along with progress bars and promptings that required a click of yes or OK the system is working like new for the most part... and hopefully i'll get everything i need restored before too long...

Would it be possible for me to do the same? I've been way too busy for comfort and my drawing task ended up being rather complex itself. I've finished drawing it after a few weeks of hard work, but coloring would take me a few more days (and even then I would need to know which parts should be colored, as I don't know where it will fit into the big picture nor what colors will be used for the sand and the sky), and I'm still terrible at shading.

I'll send you my drawing, JP. Then maybe you can help me, if only by offering some advice.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know, while I made a post a while back expressing an interest in helping, I sorta let it drop and in the end, I decided to go with an idea of my own. I worked on it and I just e-mailed the result to Amber.
I did want to say thanks to you guys though. This thread and all the talk about the 1000th comic really helped put my head in gear for providing Amber with something to celebrate this landmark. Also, because this thread started up so early, it really gave me time to get my mind comfortable with the task (despite me always being nervous of undertaking creative ventures) and enabled me me making an early start that let me make the deadline. It's highly unlikely I would have completed anything with short notice as the panic alone would have taken up a huge chunk of time, let alone doing the actual work.

Anyway, thanks again guys, and of course, thanks to Amber for creating such a great comic and bringing us all together in the first place.

If it's not too much trouble, I would like to see what everyone did for Amber's 1000th comic.  Amber, Llearch, or whomever's responsible for DMFA's website, please make a page that has all the fan contributions for this occasion?

Amber. And sometimes Darkmoon, but only if Amber asks him to.

I have no access to the server at all, otherwise I'd be poking about fixing little typos and the like without bothering Amber with them. ;-]

Sorry, PBH. ImageShack must have been down at that moment, but it's working now. I've colored the sand castle in an attempt to make up for the lost time. I'm afraid I did it in a rush, so it's not so great, but in any case it's better than having white sand.

Looking good!  :judges

I hope Amber likes it. ;3)

Merlitz's pose may look a bit strange when Abel isn't there for him to be mad at, but anyway... :)

Here's to another thousand!

I can't see the Alexsi original, I get a 404 error. O_o

Anyway, good job, everyone! :mowsmile
