I like the Tardis. Other than that, it looks like excellent work - but not to my taste. Sorry about that...

I think you need to experiment more. You're work looks great, but there's not a lot of variety.

(I had a big ol' rant prepared, but I tossed it. )

Dang... I've got a lot of practice before I can get there. Those are all amazing. You'd think you were actually sketching something you saw. Bravo.

I think my favorite of your current batch is "Hazzy," though your Tardis one from your old batch is really cool.

Excellent work indeed!  I'm quite fond of the hazzy one as well but the quality of the the rest shouldn't be overlooked.  The anatomy is spot on and some of them (the smile one in particular) have a real savage and almost frightening look to them.  I like it.  I'm a bit curious about the one that looks to be wearing a gas mask and has what seems to be a small robot riding on their shoulder.  Is this just a recurring drawing character or is there a story background to it?  If so is there anywhere I can view it?

Do you have any that are in a more finished state?  I'd really like to see how some of your inked and colored stuff would look.  I like the way you did the colors in the Tardis pic so I'm really exited to see what you do with some of the reptilian characters.  I do like the colors that you have done so far, but I dunno.  I'd just kinda like to see the whole production if you know what I mean. :)  Anyway, all looks great.  It's really impressive.  :eager

These are awesome.

If I may crit, however, most of them have really really loose line work, which is hurting the overall readability and definition of the drawings (I have the same problem, actually). The pic of Hazzy is the exception here. Did you line that one differently?

At the same time, they have this really great fluid, natural, quality. It guess it comes down to finding a balance.

I love the anatomy on "Waaa" and "Him", and Hazzy's facial expression is solid gold. I think I like furryds0 the least, though. I think it's her face that puts me off.

He is indeed a recurring character and there is quite abit of background story behind the two. The person being Maal and the small shoulder bot called Harvey. As for their back story I do not have a place you can view it on. I can offer afew old design sketches though.

Welcome to my naming system, aka. Smackin' the keyboard randomly.

I did not really do anything diffrently from Hazzys drawing, I just rather like the more sketchy style and unless stated otherwise by the person who wants the drawing, it tends to be what I do. As for the furry one, it was a quick 5 minute sketch I just decided to throw up, There's probably lots of errors with it but it's not something I'll be touching agian, just a quick doodle out of boredom.

And while i'm here I might as well throw up some other stuff.

Great sketches and awsome anatomy on the humanoids, but most of your work stand like it still in progress, not finished. Also it may not be you thing but maybe you should experiment with color some more.
Other than that, you have some potent imagination. Very nice!

Other then that... Gorgeous. It's pretty clean, but doesn't loose it's fluidity or volume. Love the hair.

Ooh, very cool, Alteisentier. The first one sort of looks like a Final Fantasy XII construct-style boss (that's a compliment, really it is, I think it looks awesome), and the second one looks great too. The helmet-mask thing in the upper right corner kind of reminds me of Kamen Rider G3, or maybe G4. My one minor gripe is that the "tail" doesn't feel long enough on that snake-like thing down in the corner. Maybe it's just me, but it feels a little short for what it's doing. But the drawings look great.

Alright, I need to type that you are an amazing artist. I agree with the others about the excellent anatomy and muscular design. I also enjoy what you do with the creativity of it all, especially the robitic designs. Probably the ones I most enjoy would be:

waaa.jpg?t=1219012524     very awesome

Avataroth-2.jpg?t=1219194704       Wow, you'd do well as a cg artist.

On the expirement, I love the color balance. Very subtle highlights and shadows. I don't wonder if there should be some shadow under her left breast, tho. I like the line variation, too.

As for the shy one... Gorgeous anatomy. Very exaggerated, but that's part of the appeal. The wings aren't so effective, though, since there aren't any "finger bones" to the struts. I can't really tell how the wrists themselves are actually built or posed, it kind of hurts the readability. The muscles look really heavy for wings, or even just compared to her arms. I like how you handled how the horns root to the head. Looking at the angle of her muzzle, I don't think we should be seeing as much of the left side of her face. I love the pose and anatomy of the feet and legs.

Ooh. No lines (Well, not very many). All I can say is that the top of the generalissimo's hat lacks the definition/contrast his face has.

On the other hand, the cloth on his sleeve is really pops out.

This looks like something Ren would love. :3

I definitely like the look of the lower amount of lines.  It kinda reminds me of cell shading work, but this has a more paint and canvas feel to it, which is neat for a digital image imho.

On another note it could also be a bit of a harsh commentary on certain things.

(His) right hand doesn't seem to be in a very comfortable position. I'm under the impression that it should just droop, limp.

Once again, nice fabric. The rumples around the knees look a little off, but the coat overall and the cuffs of his pants are great.

Title: Re: [Art] Alteisentier Art. - Tuesday the 26th
Post by: WhiteFox on October 28, 2008, 03:05:34 PM
When I look at a drawing, I stop being an artist and start being a viewer. If I have to understand fabric and light as an artist would to view your work then only artists will be able to appreciate your work, and not viewers. As an artist, I understand what you are showing me. As a viewer, I don't think you've shown it as well as you have else where in the drawing.

If you intend your work to be technical and academic in nature, rather then presentable by a general audience, this point is moot however.

This is a very minor point to be laboring over, and if you don't want to hear my reactions to your work I won't bother you with them any further, and I'm sorry if I annoyed you.

It's a sketch, a quick run of the mill 5 minute sketch. That's it, there's not really any need to get so analytical over it. I just thought it looked neat and decided to share it. You really have to stop going around and trying to find a flaw in every drawing to point out. If I were to do it to you I could write essays.

I find clothing folds excruciatingly difficult to draw, myself, so I'm terribly impressed with people who can just eyeball realistic folds in a 5-minute sketch.

Agreed, You'll find, whitefox that art isn't all about anatomy as you would think, strange as it may sound, -physics- often comes into play, how a material would work, it's thickness, and how it'll fold, for example, as well as gravity, and a myriad of other things, judging by your comic, you still have a lot to learn about anatomy, as well as physics, you'll come to realise that a certain amount of 'stylism' also comes into things, whether it be part of an artist's preferred style, a timesaving shortcut, or just lack of ability.. Given the griping about wings you've given practically everybody who's drawn them in the past (Me and Amber included) you yourself haven't much of an idea of how they would work on a winged biped.

For Example, a winged biped would not have the physical strength to lift themselves off the ground by simply 'taking off' under any means by sheer brute force. There's a reason why i haven't shown any of my characters flying yet, i cite the 'gargoyles' reason for this, as the wings are simply for gliding, not for actual 'taking off'.  also, you've studied anatomy, so have i, but i've also had a zoology major to talk to who knows more about structure and practicality than i did at the time.
Seeing how you draw wings, you'll find that they're structured not too much unlike the arm, there is even a "hand" in there somewhere.
(http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/migratory/waterbirds/shorebirds/images/figure3.jpg) case in point, here.

Alright. I don't think I've really presented myself or my principals regarding art very well. But I'd rather not clog up Alte's art thread with this conversation. That being said, I'm going to put up a short essay in my thread about some of my veiws, and I hope I can clear up a few misconceptions.

I like how the phoenix appears to be sucking the flesh out of the hand as it grows. Was that intentional, or did you just get the tendons in the palm of the hand emphasised a little much? ;-]

To be honest I did want to put emphasis on the tendons, but I didn't think I had over done it that much (Drawing at 3 in the morning yay)

Although I'm rather liking the effect now, and a few people have come to the same conclusion, so i'm going to run with it and play that up more.

I like how the hand is fleshy, apart from the part the bird is on. That's a nice, subtle touch.

And the hand is well drawn, too. The bird looks more like a parakeet than what I'd expect a phoenix to look like, but that's a minor issue.

We can get fired for swimsuit calendars.  In fact, it's happened.  I saw one guy get the boot because his gf sent him a picture of herself in a rather scanty (but tasteful) dress and he viewed it at work.  One of the women here saw it, was offended reported him for looking at lewd pictures and that was that.

Looking at the Comissar-1 pic, I just realized something about the cloth. Military uniforms (I'm not talking about fatigues here, I mean officers uniforms here) are normally made of a really stiff canvas (at least, I think it's canvas), so they don't usually rumple up so much. Sorry I made such a fuss about it before.

On the other hand, I love the fire/smoke/dust clouds in that pic.

I love the figure in the stormsketches.jpg pic. Particularly the hand, face, and pose.
