Truth be told, I did debate about holding off on this for a bit since it was following up a prior surprise and some people would likely complain about the very *wham-bam* feel.  But then I realized that would be stupid since I'd then have to fill in with a bunch of filler and drag my heels away from the actual story.

Though props to TGH for catching the super-subtle hint about Mab's dialogue in the interview comic.

Ok that grass skirt must be spinning like a propeller now with all the plot twisting. I was blind sided by that one

I've heard of state farm dropping people for little or no reason, that's why I would never deal with them.
I would recommend CAA they told me that once I was approved I wouldn't be dropped for any reason and their rates are really reasonable, the only catch is in order to get it in the first place you have to be a member, but with towing car boosting and all the other goodies of membership it is worth it

Actually, what's most surprising to me is how this affects things retroactively.  For instance, Mab trying to flirt with Merlitz way back when.
It also makes me wonder who he father is, although Amber has said that in some cases it can happen with only one parent (I used to know the scientific name for that).
Another question it raises is who got recycled into Rose.

honestly... I don't think I was shocked. I think #836 dropped a less telegraphed bomb. Like TGH, I double taked over the "Kids these days" line but simply wrote it off as Rose being an extremely young fae.

It also was less of a shock for logical reasons. Mab hasn't been in the fae kingdom for a long period of DMFA comic time. There is an explicit reference that Mab was exiled from the Fae kingdom...a plot line that was followed up on when we found out Nutmeg's tail wasn't as fluffy as Mab's (or if it might be said, James and RJ as well).

If Mab was in a state of non-communication... why was she able to get a handle on Rose all of a sudden? And why would Rose suddenly fill in for Mab's place? Ergo, Rose is either close friend, or... something more. The question then, I think, is how the story plays out from here. As I see it, Rose can go into some kind of "well, not really my mom, but close enough" or "hey, I'm really a purple kitten fae that was shape shifted so you wouldn't catchon!"

***

As to her Dad? ... Well, call me.. um... crazy... but if I recall the Fae background properly, only Fae can deliver Fae. So, that would mean that Mab's "husband" was probably a fae as well.

... Ooooo Mr. Azlan, you wouldn't happen to have a daughter you neglected to tell us about  :mowwink  :mowtongue

When I herd Rose's last line I said the same thin Jyrras said.  Though with a lot of searching there is a bit of family resemblance, like their pendants and eyes.  Rose's has a green (ish) pendant and purple eyes, Mab has purple pendant and green (ish) eyes.  Lets not forget that their fashion sense is a little similar.

Though Mab being a mom was as surprising as her orange super hero costume.  I was surprised that it was orange not that she had a superhero costume.

...My reaction when I saw this:  "Whaaaaaaaaa...?"  :erk

So Mab's a mommy.  And the first question that pops into my mind: I wonder if Rose is gonna get her own profile now that kinda-sorta-maybe-integral fact has been revealed.

That is unless she's a mommy from another time.  It's now gotten hard to tell with Fae.

I'm not getting how this is supposed to be a twist.  We hardly know Rose, and she certainly didn't have time to explain that she was Mab's daughter (or...yeah, I'm not going there).  So I assume from Jyrras' reaction that I'm supposed to be shocked, but it really doesn't seem to be anything but normal exposition to me.

Ah, phew, and here I feared I was the only one who thought so.

This is pretty much a "...so?" case since it's been pretty much established that Fae are pretty much masters of time and space and don't even reproduce the way most other races do.

If today's revelation had come before this arc, it would have been a twist in the "OMG!" category (just imagine Rose walking into Lost Lake, casually asking if anybody had seen Mom), but at the moment, it's more a case of "Ahu."

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad or underwhelming comic, but the fan reaction here makes me wonder if I'm missing something...
Title: Re: 11/02/07 [#839] Who knew?
Post by: zaehlas on November 02, 2007, 11:49:37 AM
I don't see Jyrras as being surprised because of Rose being Mab's daughter.  I think he's more surprised with Mab being a mother, and yet barely ever acting like one, or never mentioning it.  But he should be getting used to Fae peculiarities.  If one can ever get used to them.

Well, I did actually think of this when Mab said the "Kids these days" line... but I thought there was no way Amber would go there.

I was wrong.  This is Charline level twistiness.  I mean, at this point having Fa'Lina as the father is the only way to make it more strange.

*Charline erms*  Don't give Amber ideas.  The Fae simply don't resemble their parents because they don't rely on genetic inheritance.  I doubt they even have a proper atomic/molecular structure.  Besides, I'm the father.   >:3

I was just wondering how long Mab has been holding the grudge about being exiled due to the fluffiness of her tale.  I would assume that it occurred after Rose was born but before Dan was about five years old (http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_558.php).  The main question is how much contact Rose and Mab had during this period.

But the question here is that when did Mab's had Rose i'm guessing age here in terms of a being i see Mab's at a age of mid to late twenties but in Fae years i'm thinking that Mab is maybe in the thousands of years old in this department. Because the age of Rose is somewhat similar to Mab of much younger like maybe 18 or 19. I'm wondering what age she went with somebody and have that night of passion and who is the father. But all in all that shocked me that Rose revealed she is Mab's daughter will wonders never cease.

And then of course their is children of her own... but wouldn't she need the genetics of a spouse/life partner in any way? And on top of thought, I suppose it could be kind of weird to have your mother as your child...
What about gender though... where does that fit in? Is each soul a set specific?

Considering the means in which Fae have children, one doesn't necessarily need a partner or even a particular gender for that matter.  There have been many times when there was only one parent.  Or the one parent is considered male.  The way it works tends to involve more *poof* "Theres a bebe" than any actual pregnancy.   Most Fae do like to have children as a couple though, they find it delightful.

QuoteTime travel stories always affect me because of implications such as these.
Also, does this place Rose as just short of 100, or did she only recently get out to the mortal world?

Rose is just short of 600.  And she's only recently started hanging around in mortal worlds.  There is quite a bit to do in the Fae world after all.
I just looked through the old posts again and it seems I was mistaken in my memories.  One possibility is that she have come to the mortal worlds soon after her mother's self-imposed exile.  Which would put the length of her separation from the Fae world at about a century.

Had you been reading some of the other conversations in older topics you'd know that Rose is about 600 years old.

You'd also know that fae having babies does not require sexual interaction, or two parents even, nor does the parent in a case of there only being one have to be considered female (Therefore I believe it's safe to assume that in the case of two parents they don't have to be of the opposite sex. It's also possible that a fae could have more than two parents, but who knows with Amber). Instead it's just that once the soul is in the process of being recycled after it has decided to "die" it goes to whatever parent(s) is/are chosen, or to one at random if a parent is not selected after a certain amount of time of the soul being "dead". Then it's more of a "...*Poof* 'There's a baby'..." scenario, as Amber so elegantly put it.

Also, I don't think it's possible to label a fae as being at any certain stage in life, because they could live forever if they wanted to.

Why's everybody looking at me weird? I can pay attention sometimes too!

Mab is a master of transformations.  When Dan was younger she had the appearance of a child.  Forgot what strip that was but Mab looked so child like and cute.  Mab still acts like a child at times but her years and wisdom show through at random times.

Now that Dan is probably going to live a few thousand years I think Mab will keep the teen-ish look for a while.

Though one question comes to mind.  Who IS Rose's dad (if she has one considering Fae are Big on recycling).  Considering how Pyro made the joke about coming to Lost lake to protect Dan and Pyro was from the Future, which he denounced a second later.
For all we know Rose could be part cubi (Dan's daughtor considering how she acts at times) but I doubt that's the case.

Probably Mab got lucky and is an only parent to a bright (and troublesome) daughter.

you know this makes me wonder just how fae are born.

What are there early stages of development.  Do they go threw an infancy as we would know it?

here is my speculative take on the matter.

A new Fae parent brings home the bouncing baby soul.  They then care for and nurture it, or maybe just stick it up over there fireplace, for a gestation period.  During that time the new fae's body slowly coalesces around the soul.  starting out as a faint outline and slowly solidifying over a number of days, months, years, what ever.  It's early appearance is influenced by the fae it's around during this gestation period, as are it's personality and speach patterns.  Once the new fae is fully developed so it can interact with others, the parents then start to teach it things it needs to know.  Most fae can speak at this point but they are now taught history, rules, how to use there powers and how o interact with other creatures and beings.  How long this lasts is anybody's guess

I would support a ban on any fan fiction that features a half anything character, its an over used idea, I accept that trying to create an interesting character is hard without resorting to cliché's. Make them a pure race and give them a interesting back story and personality traits, if you do it right the result is far superior. I do like the idea of the cubi race though.

I'm not quite sure what you mean here.  If you're talking about something that is actually half-'cubi half-Being like Amber says can't happen, then yes, your idea bears consideration, notwithstanding that you can have half-Demons (Lorenda) and possibly part-Angels as well.  Thus unlike part-'Cubi they are a valid construct within the world of DMFA.
Half-Fae or Half-phoenix-oracle in this manner is probably not a valid construct given that their 'afterlifecycle' is different to and incompatible with other races.

If you meant a ban on Creatures which were born to a Being parent (e.g. Dan, Abel and Lorenda) then I think that's a bit overkill, not least because it's something 'Cubi in particular seem to do quite a lot.

As for the Fae creating the 'Cubi race, I'm fairly sure they are a synthetic race, and the Fae almost certainly have the power to do such things if they see fit.  Around the time Pyroduck's race was revealed, someone claimed the Dragons were the creators and have since been trying to 'undo the mistake' but there is no evidence to support it.

Well, tapewolf, I don't believe the demonology states that a phoenix can't breed, only that their specific race only has 42 members (All female).  It's possible that no pure phoenix will ever be born outside of a rebirth and, should any member of the species decide to fool around, any resulting children will be normal beings.  Or creatures, depending on the father.

Then again...

And while there are always rumours of half-breeds with a Phoenix or a temple of males...there has never been any evidence to this and most consider it the ramblings of wishful idiots.

Erm...heh.  *Ninja-vanish*

My guess is that if you get anything at all from a Being-Phoenix or Being-Fae union, it would be another Being.

If any sort of conception is indeed possible, that seems to be the most likely outcome.

I mean any Half creatures/beings not already firmly established in the story, there is no cure for the Mary Sue pandemic, only prevention.

Well, sort of. If their 'unique' species is a central character detail alarm bells should start to ring.

There was several reasons I stomped out the vampire race from Furrae.  One of them being that I find vampires to be an overdone and easily Mary-Sue exploitable race.

Granted the hybrid genetics bonus arc will cover most of these bases, but I'll still ramble on them.

Now, there are a few races that can't hybridize.  Either due to their structure being far too different from other species to work, or due to other reasons.  Sure, that won't stop the ultimate Mary-Sue writers from just going "oh but my character is an amazingly rare and miraculous exception." but it can at least stop me from having to acknowledge their attempts.

Other species can hybridize very easily...but often the end result isn't all that "ooh aah" impressive.  Usually the half breed is exactly the same as the pure breed or a lesser form.  There isn't really an "all of their strengths/none of their weaknesses" gimmick because half the time there wasn't an insane amount of weaknesses to begin with.  The closest to issues with that might be a couple purist groups who dislike the idea of inter-race hybrids.

Honestly, half the time I don't even think too much on it because more often than not I find that it isn't so much about lineage so much as what one does with what they got that makes for a better story.  Not to mention that there are a lot of cases in Furrae's history where some creature who hailed from a powerful lineage got completely stomped because they relied too much on what they took for granted.

Really, just have your mary sue be a half mythos/half mythos, then you can give them whatever powers you want even if they don't make sense together, without any of the weaknesses you decided they would have had if they weren't a halfbreed.

Or they could just be a fae. An exiled fae, of course, so that they didn't have to obey any of the laws. Exiled because they didn't have anything resembling the typical fae mindset, so that you don't have to worry about writing any personality other than your own.

Any questions? Didn't think so.

Also, "Mary Sue"? I sort of understand the implication, but I don't get the reference.
