Amber,
Good luck and have fun on your vacation. One thing just occured to me. Do you have your passport? I don't know when the new law requireing a passport to travel from Canada to the US, and vice versa, goes into affect. I am not sure if you are aware of this or not.
I hope you have no trouble at the border. I'm still impressed by your blue pencil. I haven't seen anything like it.
By the way, what happened to fluffy?
I'll proclaim this one to be first...
Good luck and good fortune to you, Amber. Do try to get that rest. From the way things have soudned, you really do need it.
(I merged the two topics, just to clarify why there is a "first" comment, and nothing new and shiny in the mine)

Amber, it seems, is the master of drawing really really light.
... unlike my work, which is (mostly) hard ink and hideously sketchy as a result of using lots of loose gestural strokes as opposed to paying attention to proportion until I'm close to finishing. :B

And after the border ordeal is over, then it's time to party!

There are easier ways than braving the border guards... All you have to do is to visit the Speakeasy, tell the bartender you have a hankering for maple syrup. When he asks you "Need it be fresh?", you answer "Straight from the tree!"
Bring $1000 in small used bills and everything will be taken care of. Oh, and say that Stig sent you.
Heh. She's trying to -leave- Canada, not enter it.
Perhaps on the way back... ;-]
Pah. Don't be sorry for taking a break! You've earned it. 800+ comics, even in the face of college, traveling, and getting married? And all for the sake of us lowly nerds... You are a force to be reckoned with, Amber. Enjoy your rest.
Have a nice vacatoin, Amber. We all hope you'll have a lovely time, and will return well-rested.

Well, it ain't the Canada branch, she made deals with us regerding DMFA merchandice production.
We were going to get started on it as soon as she had a buffer...
1) When did she agree to that?
2) Amber is never going to have a buffer. Last I had talked to her, she purposefully avoided buffers at all cost... mostly because it takes her eight hours to do a single comic, and trying to build up a buffer of those leads to her having no life at all.
Heh.
Actually, I was thinking about this. If she falls back to a mon/wed/fri/sat cycle, and drops the Thursday updates completely, she could use Thursday (or Wednesday, whatever time she'd use to do Thursday's update) to put in a single comic into the buffer.
Over a month, she'd have a week's buffer, no problems. And having a one day buffer would give her that much less stress about being on-time and all.
This would result in less comics for a while, but, honestly, she's been -so- regular, and -so- predictable (as far as comic time, not content, goes) I figure she's due some break time. And I don't think anyone would be -too- upset if she fell back to M/W/F after Abel's Story finishes, which would give her another chance to build some buffer.
Except her, of course. :-]
... all this presumes that she'd be happy with such a suggestion, and, on the whole, I think I've got more chance of persuading the Mississippi to flow backwards than I do of persuading Amber to change her work habits this much. So I don't think anyone should hold their breath. ;-]
Maybe if I bribe Tailsteak.... ;-]
Eh, somehow I think if Mab had it so she didn't have to update less, that would only result in her spending less time on the comic.
ya think? ;-]
Knowing my sister, she'll invariably go for the lazy 99 times out of 100...
Although, having said that, I'm sure she'll now see it as a challenge to actually be productiev.

For a while, now, she's been doing things like Cubi Information, or the Fashion things, on Thursdays. She's mentioned in rants that she doesn't seem able to keep up with daily-barring-Sunday, but if she drops Tuesday, she's reasonably ok.
Bear in mind I'm not looking to put pressure on her here - rather, I'm looking at ways of reducing it, so that she can focus on the art - after all, I can't do art, so why should she be expected to code webpages for the updates? Seems fair enough to me to get someone who does things well, and enjoys those things, to focus on just that. *shrug*

just ask any comicgenner about a buffer and they'll say "what's that?" seriously, buffers are for people with too much free time on their hands, and no life at all..
I'm not sure comicgen actually enables using a buffer, though.
Especially since they seem to have a random delay on actually updating, once you put in your update. Or so people seem to keep complaining...

I don't find it particularly entertaining--I find it more heartening, because it means that US exports, which have recently been extremely expensive, are now going to begin selling better.
(I am slightly miffed that the Canadian dollar is roughly on a par with the US one)

I don't know ... I still somehow find it weird to see evidence of the webcomics outside of "The Internet". I know this is nonsense. I know wecomics - and DMFA specifically - are the result of hard work from dedicated and very real people. But still... something in the transition from the web to "The real world" feels strange... Kind of like if you saw the main character of a novel running around in broad daylight...

Does that mean that the woman in the TMNT shirt with the convention badge reading "Miss Mab" is Amber. I assume that this is an Anthrocon badge, but there isn't enough resolution to read those details.

hmm... pic and name tag look just fine to me. Firefox's zoom is soo much nicer than IE's. :mowhappy
I still think Tiki was channeling Scott Kurtz (PvP) on Friday.
Agreed. But if I remember correctly, IE7 stole uses the same type of zoom as Firefox.
Wonder if something happened at the border. No posts from Amber for a long time.
I would imagine that we would have heard if anything had happened to Amber. I imagine that she's just resting, and we should encourage her to rest and regain sanity. It may just take a while for her to build up enough courage to face the weirdoes on this forum. (I include myself.)
When I want to examine an image on a web site, I don't use the zoom in the browser. I move it to a graphics program and then I really zoom in. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the browser, just that I have difficulty reading the smallest text on the badge.
Well, for my book, what I did is:
1. stuck subtitle-text onto all the comics via a script
2. cleaned the whitespace off all sides of each comic via a script
3. resized each comic to a max of 817X400, 600 or 800 depending on the shape
4. stuck the lists of comics into my own template, and printed the entire thing at 200dpi
This yields comics approx. 4 3/16" X 2
Here are a couple pictures.
1. An early page under unshielded 4-watt incandescent light(i.e. night-light) Full quality(1.40 megs) (http://robbiethe1st.ktserv.com/images/IMG_2432.jpg) | Low quality(120k) (http://robbiethe1st.ktserv.com/images/IMG_2432-v.jpg)
2. Warrior for hire page, under automatic camera flash
Full quality(1.51 megs) (http://robbiethe1st.ktserv.com/images/IMG_2440.jpg) | Low quality(232k) (http://robbiethe1st.ktserv.com/images/IMG_2440-s.jpg)
3. A later page, under automatic flash
Full quality(1.67 megs) (http://robbiethe1st.ktserv.com/images/IMG_2437.jpg) | Low quality(263k) (http://robbiethe1st.ktserv.com/images/IMG_2437-s.jpg)
Now, most of you will want to do things larger if you print your own copy, but for me, I have good eyes, and well, printing a book takes quite a bit of ink!
If anyone needs, I can upload the pages required to make your own... or you can grab the scripts to do so from my topic in the art forum. :P
Unfortunately, my file-uploader doesn't like the 1.7-3.0 meg page-sides I tried to upload, so if I do upload the files it will be through a new and interesting method, forcing me to learn something new!

Tailsteak has heard from her recently. As far as I know, she is waiting to attempt the border. If her origanal plan is holding, I think she is waiting for paperwork before attempting it.
Tailsteak says that they are planning this one a little more, so there most likely won't be as much or, or as dramatic a problem if one occurs.
Sheesh, people give the US all sorts of grief for not allowing illegal immigrants free access to our country, yet Canada is even anal about letting its own citizens back in.
Typical liberal hypocrisy!
Liberals always telling us to walk to work and stop leaving lights on when they have monsterous gas-guzzling SUV limos and private jets that release more CO2 in one trip than the average family car does in a year and mansions that use more electricity than some small third-world countries! Liberals who preach for wind farms and then complain vehemently that they can't build them in Massachusetts because it'll spoil their mountain view!
And even worse, now we can't sell home-baked pies in NJ because they're arbitrarily decided that it's a health risk! Without any data at all on the incidence of food poisoning compared to what you usually find at a typical fast food restaurant (in various such establisments I've had food poisoning over a dozen times, but never from anything I myself made.)
Yes, what Mab must endure is just another part of the liberal plan to micromanage our lives until we're too weak and depressed to put up a fight when their Scientologist masters enact their plans for world domination. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!! >:O

I'm more upset about the thought policing and telling me that I'm performing hate crimes towards the hispanic, black, homosexual women by offering to hold the door open for them.
Or by saying "hispanic, black, homosexual woman."
That, and they want my money. Could the government get out of my back pocket for one second!? When a person on the street does it, it's called "stealing." When the government does it, it's called "taxes."
Or "supporting your country."

What happened the last time she tried to cross the Border? For those of us not in the know... :)
They found 4 kilos on her
4 kilos of purple pixy-stix! Can anyone say "sugar high|? :rolleyes

Since when? Why's holding doors suddenly a problem? :<

When that happens, I respond, "No. *My* parents taught me manners." Then I let go of the door and walk away.
Don't worry guys, we still have her. We'll post if something happens.

I'm not a girl, and people always hold the door open for me.
I frickin' hate it when people hold open the door. Especially when I'm not really all that close behind them, and have to either continue walking at a normal pace and leave them holding it open for 20 seconds, or break into a run for their amusement. I want to murder them and set their pets on fire when they pull that.
But instead, I just continue walking at a normal pace and leave them holding it open for 20 seconds. *sigh*

Which is all I'd ever expect, if I held the door for you. I'm doing it because I'm polite enough to hold the door for folks, not because I expect you to appreciate it. If you do, good. If not, that's also good.
As DarkAudit said, I do it because of -me-, not -you-. And that means I'll hold the door for anyone, regardless of gender. It's just who I am. *shrug*

Are you talking about the Democratic US congress, which has the
lowest congressional rating in recorded United States of American history, or do you live elsewhere?(and the public thought a Republican congress was bad.)
Because technically speaking, the Judiciary and Congressional branches both have more power than the Executive branch, and both of them are largely Democratic at the moment, not Republican.

Exactly -- it's about the person holding the door open scoring social points. Not running to the door lets them score more, running to the door lets them score more of a different type -- it's lose lose for the person getting the door held open for them. The only way for the victim to win is to pretend that you weren't actually going through that door anyway until they give up, but that's a little too petty even for me. I don't care about the points enough to inconvenience myself by going to a different door, like I should if I wanted to win.

Believe it or not, some of the people holding the door open aren't looking for social points. If I'm going through a door and see that somebody is behind me, are you saying that the proper thing to do is to slam the door in their face so that they have to open it themselves?
The person having the door held open for themselves is truly a self made victim. Their perception of a slight is based on their own erroneous perception of the motives of the other person. In fact, I have often found such a reaction based on the idea that they wouldn't hold the door open for smebody else. Since they view themselves as decent and they wouldn't hold the door open for somebody else, anybody who holds the door open for them must be doing it for an indecent reason.
Hmm I usually hold the door open for people. In my little town wich is apparently a city but i'll always see it as a town by the time you actually open the door the person is through it and your walking away. However if they even attempt to speak to me they get a death glare. I do it because it doesn't take that much time and just because i'm nice doesn't mean i want to talk to them. Unfortunatly they can't seem to grasp that even though i'm wearing a t-shirt with big letters that says "anti-social-that means go away."
I like that shirt.
Also, have fun on your vacation Amber.

Interesting tactic...i suppose thats one way to get an easy meal.
Raist quote.
(I may be more messed up in the head than usual right now. I've just decided to quit attending my weekly Bible study.)
I stopped doing anything bible related years ago by my will. The only times I did i was dragged there. I don't like persistance and nearly everyone in my town has perfected it...I need to move to a different city.
I'm not stopping because it's Bible-related, I'm stopping because it's fairly shallow. For the past 3 weeks, I've gone, and gotten nothing out of it. The lessons were stuff I already knew, or failed to pay attention to, the songs were selections only the song leaders knew, and there are people there I would just rather avoid.
If I keep going, that's just false worship, to me, and false worship is worse than hardcore Athiesm.
I don't like worshiping it sounds so... controlling. I prefer to just keep it in mind but not do any events with it. That way your still in the general group but you don't have to deal with anyone else. Besides everything in there is past the only things worth knowing are the things to come...or at least thats my opinion.
Heh, in our church we have very deep discussions. There's a regular sermon for about half and hour to 45 mins, rarely a full hour, at around noon and a simple little worship service, but in the morning we have a Sabbath School class, which often gets into very deep stuff. And when I was younger and had more time, we'd sometimes meet after church to discuss things further. Some of those group discussions lasted 6 hours! I like intellectual debates. :)

Try and find one that skews older, probably to those who are out of college and are looking for intellectual discussion. If they start singing songs, get out. You can find some groups that have a hardcore intellectual bent, but it will take some looking. Some denominations are not known for their intellectual rigor, so you may have to look to other denominations. Good luck.
