That must mean they not only make slaves of people from other nations, but they don't treat them well either.

That seems to have shocked Gadel about Doodle's age.

It's not unusual for feudal societies; marriage at 12-16 and three or four children by the time you're twenty, at least for the "lower classes" (who are lower mostly in their food supplies and life expectancy, really) with old age fairly short and death soon after.

However, it does imply some interesting things about Gadel's assumptions, and what this information will do to them. And then there's the other side of things, to whit, what Gadel has assumed about the age (and hence experience) of the folks she's been working with for the last couple of months. And, as a result, her assumptions that she knows better because, well, in her society, she does know better, simply because she's been educated and they (the peasants; ie, anyone without talent) haven't.

Surprising what education does to people, isn't it?
