Additional subsystems:
SYMBIOS 53c8xx SCSI controller (running two 1998-era scanners)
M-Audio Midisport 4x4 USB MIDI bridge controlling synthesizers
Edirol UA5 USB audio interface
M-Audio Transit USB audio interface
Korg Triton Ex

Hotrodded Mac Mini

DAW
Chassis: Dell System 325 (circa 1989, hotrodded to take an ATX motherboard)
CPU: AMD T-bird 1GHz
GPU: nVidia 6200
RAM: 1GB
Disk: 2x200GB PATA
PSU: 230
OS: Windows XP Home SP2
Additional subsystems:
Terratec Phase88 Firewire audio module (8 channels of 24/96 AD/DA)

....this machine is only used for digitizing multitracks.   Mostly it acts as a stand for my monitor.

ROM workstation
Chassis: Dell Optiplex 575

GPU: S3 Trio
RAM: 16MB
Disk: 32MB Solid state
OS: DRDOS 7.03

Additional subsystems:
ART EPP-2 EPROM programmer

...I also have a Toshiba Portage 4000 which I use for recording work (all my music is 'performed' on this), that runs Kubuntu 7.04/32.

Finally, I have an EeePC 701 which I take when travelling and otherwise use as a quick way to check DMFA in the mornings.  After the mess of trying to colour Project Future at AC with only 512MB (accidentally pressing 'CTRL-D' would duplicate the image, exhausting the memory space and killing GIMP), I have upgraded that to 2GB.  The EeePC runs Ubuntu UNR 9.04

Well, it's not so much hell, it's just that my first one is partitioned with 20 gigs doing absolutely nothing, and my other has 10 gigs just lying there. I can't believe that I didn't notice for 6 months that i was missing a total of 30 gigs :S

I did something like that when I was looking for space to install W7.  I had to delete the extended partition, make it bigger and recreate all the contained partitions exactly.  It was a bit hairy, but it worked.

About a year and a half old and still fast enough to do what I want it to do, but neither Windows 7 nor Windows Vista have impressed me as not all of my hardware works with it. The software doesn't work right either but the main problem is a POS network gatekeeper app that my school makes me run and often doesn't work right even with Windows XP.

And at least two more cases that don't have operating systems at the moment. Oh, and another couple of laptops, which I haven't bothered to do anything with...

None of those last set are currently working, though, so...

No offense, but this seems a bit underpowered for the stuff you have plugged into it. Just sayin'...

Now get a laugh:

1996 Compaq Deskpro 4000/6200

  • Pentium Pro 200
  • 128 MB SIMM
  • 38GiB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7
  • 38GiB WD400JB
  • Ensoniq 1371
  • Voodoo3 PCI
  • 120W? Compaq PSU
  • Debian Squeeze

2005 IBM/Lenovo ThinkCentre M51 8142-Y2M

  • Pentium 4 3.20 HT
  • 512MB DDR1 (planning to expand)
  • 76GiB Hitachi
  • 465GiB WD5000AAKS
  • Integrated Intel GMA900 (planning to get some lower-shelf PCIe card)
  • 230W? Lenovo PSU
  • Debian Squeeze
  • Rarely used XP Pro

There are also PIII-800/384 and Duron 1.3/256 used by other members of the family, and a bunch of unused 95-96 boxen.

I don't need top of the line hardware. I need hardware that's reliable and will still be functioning after many years.
And I still hope I'll get that MicroVAX 3100/98 one day.

sda1 is the W2K system partition.  sda2 is the boot block.  sda4 is Mandrake, I think, sda6 is the main linux partition and sda7 is the linux-32 install I keep around in case I need it, typically for recording Morrowind videos.  sda8 is Windows 7.

sdb1 is DRDOS.  sdb3 and 5-8 are also DRDOS.  Maybe I should collate these into a single partition since I'm mostly running DOS stuff through DOSBOX nowadays, but old habits die hard.  They have been imaged from disk to disk using DD for about 10 years, so why break the habit?
sdb9 is the linux data partition including but not limited to /home.  sdb10 is... actually, I have no idea what sdb10 is.  It's not on the mount list.  Guess I'd better find out.  Anyway, sdb11 is the Windows data partition.

Whoa, man! I have one dead partition, but i know what's on it. :)
The only other extravaganza is twenty cylinders of unpartitioned space just after the first 5 GiB of the 400JB. "Buffer space" to the sides of a single logical bad sector. Prolly a MHDD erase with remap would fix it... but erase isn't a fun thing to do, and everything's living happiliy as it is for a few years now.

PS. Something you might be interested in: Seems that last version of VAX/VMS that supported 11/780 and 11/785 was 5.4.

EDIT: Nah, HP removed the more recent installation supplement PDFs. It's 6.2.

GPU: ATI 4870
PSU 750 Watt
RAM: 8GB off spec DDR2-1066
Sound: Some manner of asus xondar dx card.
Monitor 26" 1920x1600.  FULL OF XTERMS!
Disk drives:
1 TB (storage for research).
750 GB: Windows Vista (not used all that much anymore.  May repurpose).
500 GB: Various Linux installs, mostly Ubuntu.

I have bits and pieces to build two more computers, would if I could think of a reason too.  Got a dying Apple laptop, screen and battery are about to go so I may replace it.  If I did I would probably install Vista on that as well and then just use the main system for Linux stuff.

That is interesting.  I was kind of wondering when they dropped support for it.  Finding out when Oracle dropped the original VAX architecture was also kind of tricky.
