How do i put my avatar in? I click the button that says i have my own pic then type in the URL, click update porfile, and it reloads the profile page with the url box empty. This is frustrating!

It might be to large; check the size maximum compared to your image.

Yeah that is what happens when it is too large. 150 x 150 is the max I believe.

You cerrenly haven't got an avatar. Remember the 175×175 image size limit
also note that you don't use a irregular picture format but PNG or JPEG (etc.)

Try refreshing after submiting the image for your avatar a few times. It helps.

Did you remember to mark the round checkbox by the "I have my own pic"?

If you don't mark it, it won't be updated.
