As far as I can tell, most clan founders seem to have tri-wings, yeah. Pretty sure those that have tri-wings are just incredibly powerful cubi.

I have heard that tri-wings usually seem to hide their third-wings.  It occurs to me that the dragons might want them all dead, though it's just speculation.
