-It's a widely-known fact that you do.
-That's a hard one, as the same things don't work on everyone, but here are some ideas:
   

• A cup of milk before going to bed.
     
• Physical excercise.
     
• Slow countdown from a high number, no lower than 100.
     
• Breathing slowly: make sure you spend at least twice as long breathing out as you do breathing in.
     
• Neck massage, especially the top of your neck. You can do it yourself.
     
• If something's troubling you, convince yourself that it's not the right time to deal with it.
     
• Make sure your surrounding conditions (temperature, light and noise levels) are comfortable for you.
     
• Reading, just make sure what you read isn't too interesting or you may get the opposite effect. But it will still help you get your mind off your insomnia problem if all else fails.
     
• And especially, don't get worked up thinking of how you should be sleeping. Just relax.
