Very little, actually.  Most of the current crop of writers are pretty restrained.

Or maybe she knew all along and is doing this on purpose to affect Abel's impression of her.
I'd say definitely. Remember, this is Fa'lina we're talking about: she of the reference posters that messed with Dan's mind. Add in the typical 'Cubi seen-it-all attitude, and... can we safely assume Fa'lina knows how little Abel knows about 'Cubi? As far as I can tell, practically everything she does is an act put on to some purpose, as in the last few scenes of the "Unwilling and Abel" arc.

It's probably a romance novel. ...Pornographic romance novel, true, but still, if they're going to write an entire novel they need to have SOMETHING in it besides the sex scenes.

Since when? ;-]

Quote from: Wanderer on June 22, 2008, 01:12:44 PM
But still, even for a full-sized novel, it's true it would be odd for it to wait what looks like more than 100 pages before getting explicit enough for Fa'Lina to realize what she was reading.

Or maybe she knew all along and is doing this on purpose to affect Abel's impression of her.

Heh. Ok, that seems more likely.

I love how Abel's eyes go shiny again after "waking up"

(looks again) Oh, THAT'S why he looked different. Shouldn't that book's topics be the last thing on anyone's mind right now? Oh, wait... that's why Fa'Lina brought the book in the first place isn't it.

Maybe, although some Cubi may not like that single-minded view of their natures. Though it does seem to be based on the truth.
The Real Myth of Sisyphus:
The itsy-bitsy spider went up the water spout,
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain,
And the itsy-bitsy spider went up the spout again...

Not to mention to put a y at the end of that . . .

Naldru

Actually, I was thinking of the song Chantilly Lace, an old rock and roll classic.  There was a line in there that went "You know what I like".  Well, with cubi, that would be true.  Of course, sometimes you might not want to know what the other person likes.

Isn't Oolong the pig from dragon ball? hmm...

*nods*  It's my favorite tea next to Earl Grey.  There's a Chinese buffet near me that makes incredibly good oolong.  I don't know how they steep it or what brand of tea leaves they use, but it's incredibly good.  It has a sweetish, faintly vanilla-like flavor.  I never put anything in it for fear of ruining the delicate essence.

Contents of the book aside (although on top of all this, I like her reaction, too)...

There's the act in itself of her reading to Abel until he comes out of catatonia.

Stop making me like Fa'Lina so much!  Where's the insane, person-hurting sadist I would expect to find easy to dislike? L:

Since it looks like she becomes Abel's mentor for most of the time he's at SAIA, what's going to be really interesting is when and how she explains to him that the Academy teaches its students how to torture people, murder them and eat their souls.  (Of course we know it teaches more innocuous things too, but those are the ones which are going to freak him out big-time).

It won't be. Abel is in quarantine, remember? Back a couple of strips.

The only reason Ink's tea was flavoured by Dan is because he didn't know how to shield himself.

I don't think it works that way. There's no evidence that mind shields block one's own emotional radiation. Indeed, Fa'Lina's ability to shield her emotions is considered unusual among Cubi... even discomforting.

"filter" might be a better word than "block". I'm guessing, mind, but my understanding was something along the lines of _limiting_ the amount you spread around the local area, rather than flooding everyone in sight.

I could well be wrong, of course. We'll have to wait for Amber to get back to find out... ;-]

I do wonder where Amber got the 'source material' for that story extract. But once you've read one of them I guess you've read them all, can't be too hard to make one up.

The other thing I wonder about is if it ever bugs amber that so much background text gets obscured, this has the positive effect of being a useful device for conveying an idea that is better with less detail, but has the negative effect that some readers will spend an age using image enhancing software to figure out what the words are and then start a conspiracy theory about. I for one think she has a done a good job of it.

I think I have an idea. This is an assumption I think is those romance novels that has Fabio on the cover. I remember reading those and others from the Harlequin novel that my ex lend them to me. I think Amber got that line from those i think or I could be wrong. :mowcookie

<nod> I'm remembering what Abel said to Jyrras when their discussion got around to Dan and what he might be doing with his 'Cubi abilities, accidentally or not.

I've always wondered what kind of alt-text/title Amber would put under these if she wasn't lazy enough to simply number them.

For this one, my guess goes for "God forbid."
