One of the world's greats, Sir Edmund Hillary, passed away on Friday, aged 88.

A gentleman and a scholar, the man who had "Sir Ed" on his mountaineering parka, who was singular in being the only person other than the reigning monarch to have his face on an New Zealand banknote while he was still alive, has left us, and we shall all be the poorer for it.
