Right, so Danni had some kind of body-modifications done by the Change temple.  It would explain the curious onlookers, and if Ulani didn't approve, it might go some way towards the stony welcome.
My guess would be a sex-change operation, since the other typical thing here is a race swap, and Danni seems to be a normal Caucasian human just like the other villagers.
