As mentioned, the school is facing an army, so this is only a holding pattern.  It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, especially since they've effectively declared war on the gryphons as well.
Dog seems strangely enthusiatic about the prospect of winning... If the school is good enough, they may be able to drag it out long enough or suck up enough resources to make it uneconomical to win.
