Absalom grinned at the fox.
"Go stu---"he began in a faux-cheery voice, before remembering that this was not home and he could not afford to get in any kind of trouble here. "Hm."
He settled instead for scowling at the fox before continuing  on his way.

The minor situation in the shuttlebay defused itself to the chagrin of a marine major, though he and a small detachment personally escorted the guest, guards and Major Kanzoria to their respective quarters.

The group passed by the training room and the Major caught sight of a familiar duty uniform and stopped.  He turned on his heels and entered, "Ah, Special Forces!"

Benjamin, who had been watching Romulus in his daily routine of training came to immediate attention, being the one closest to the door, he made the call, "Atten-tion!"

The few other crewmen that were also there came to attention.

The Major looked over Benjamin, "You are Special Forces and under ISF operational doctrine, you fall under ISIS jurisdiction as needed.  I may have need of your unit in our rather unique mission.  Now carry on, I did not mean to interupt you from your..."  He eyed the Wing Chung training dummy and gave a snicker, "... training."

Back in the shuttlebay...

"Commander McDuff?" A young ensign called out as she ducked her head into the shuttle to look around, "maybe he fell asleep?"

Vulpecula IV - Absalom's leave

The local fox would have persued the issue, if it were not for one of the Revelation's other mecha pilots, a fox, and his lapine friend grabbing Absalom and ushering him off.

"Sergeant, funny running into you here!  Let's go have a drink!"  Master Sergeant Orlo chimed in as he swept him off towards the bar district.
"Ha ha! The fun has been doubled!"

The Raptors assigned to Maj. Hadem and Lt. Jeico shot out of the launch tubes and out into the void.

"Ok 'Cool Hand' lets hit that first waypoint, should be a quiet patrol but keep it tight, pirates have been operating in this area for decades." 'Viper' radioed to his wingman as they angled out and away from the Relelation.

"Two" Kal sent back to let Dom know he'd heard edging his LAM at little closer to his lead.

"Revelation, Aces Flight of two hitting first waypoint now." 'Viper' tight beamed to the cruiser as they changed heading to their second waypoint and settled in for a long patrol.

marco was walking rather calmly. he didnt really have a destination but he thought a walk might do him some good. he walked past the fighter hanger and glanced in at iyori working on her fighter. he paused and noticed she was covered in oil and greese from head to toe. every now and again she spat vile tasteing motor fluids creeping into her mouth into a can she sat beside her for that reason. marco kept walking on. after a while he found himself outside of a large window. he turned and stared into the void. never ending cold and dark. in many ways it was familiar and yet he dispised it, but none the less marco couldnt stop stareing...

Romulus never stopped hitting the battered old training dummy. He did open an ear to hear what the Major had to say. He rolled his eyes as the Major mentioned unique mission. He heard the Major's little snicker when talking about training. Romulus lets a sly smile past his lips as he continued to hit the dummy. As soon as the Major and the group walk passed the room Romulus stops and walks over to an open area in the room. He then starts to practice serveral different Martial Arts forms including, Maui Tai fighting, Tai Kwan Do, two styles of Kung Fu, Drunken Boxing, Wing Chung, and Ninjitsu. He looks over at Ben while going through the movements.
"I guess those are gonna be the guys to talk to when this thing is done. Hell maybe if you bring them back something to study they'll let you transfer"

Commander MacDuff was unaware of the disturbance outside the craft as he was, once again, absorbed in a simulation that pitted his capital ships and fighter forces against the enemy. He had been fixated on the screen of the pad he was holding in his wings until a voice calling his name brought his attention back to the present.

"No, I'm not asleep." He said as he rose from his seat. "Please excuse me, I frequently get carried away these days..." The ensign smiled as they both exited the craft. "That's all right. You would have been held up outside anyway. There was a... misunderstanding involving the security forces."

"I see. Well, if you could point me to the nearest lift, I believe I need to speak with the Captain." MacDuff requested.

After receiving the directions, the Commander made his way to the bridge. He hoped his meeting with the Captain would go smoothly. While reviewing what he would say in his mind, he thought of how being First Officer would be different...

Benjamin nods, "That was Major Yuri Kanzoria, the most dangerous being alive some say.  No doubt he and the ISIS relations bureau foster the myths about their top operatives, but still, he is better an ally then an enemy."

INARI Class Cruiser, Revelation - Bridge

MacDuff arrives just in time for a brief introduction before being spirited off with the Captain to the Tactical briefing.

Like all fleet wide virtual conferences, it is held in a secure, encrypted construct in hypernet space.  Multitasking is a must as a participant is required to monitor the "public" room and their private room(s).

The public forum is where the battle plan is hashed out.  The Sphere is largely a huge mobile base, it is not heavily armed, certainly it does not possess any "super-weapons".  The primary plan involves penetrating the sphere and carrying out both fleet and ground actions within.

The alien control systems and vessels, which are largely autonomous AI's, are highly susceptible to telepathic interference and can be severed from their central control units if said control units can be contained by powerful psychics.  The special alien guests just happen to be extremely powerful psychics, currently controlled and restrained by special jamming devices, the bells on the foxes, developed by ISIS engineers and researchers.

The enemy does not expect the lesser races to be able to mount an attack on a sphere and as such the design is not especially tactical in layout.  Entrance to the inner space of the sphere is controlled by a single, giant gate structure.  Penetration of the gates will be handled by the "frontal attack vectors."

This part of the plan raises objection from Vice Commodore (ISF rank Captain) Ashaen Zunier, Lycan commander of the Battlecruiser (classed as a frontal assault vector in the ISF Navy) Tarnyar, "So you vould sacrifice Lycan blood to achieve your aims, General?"

Pausing the simulation, the General turns to regard the wolf with a warm smile, "not at all Captain Zunier, a whole squadron of ships specifically designed for this role will be aiding your wing.  The Zenith and Paladin class Assault Vectors."  At the General's nod a layout of the look and basic capabilities of these two ships is displayed.  "The squadron awaits our arrival at the muster point..."

Captain Zunier hammers the virtual table with his fist, "zo zhe Raillphen Star Guard has been producing these ships in secret, failing to share this advanced technology with the Lyca... rest of the Federation's people.  Quantum discharge cannons and this new super laser design based off of Lycan spinal laser technology."

"Captain Zunier, as I stated these ships were specifically designed for this operation!  Might I add that your new Novas are built with weapons technology proprietary to your military.  Might I also remind you that we are fighting, together for the future of everyone in our home space!"

Captain Zunier backed down, but he did not relent his position.  The meeting continued with more strategy.

In one of the private rooms specifically for the Revelation and her new scout fleet, the Admiral and General held a separate briefing for Morgan's crew and ships.

"Captain, this star map shows the path your fleet will be charged to scout.  Your ships are acting as the forward locators, our enemies do not suspect that we are sending a fleet to intercept their force, likely they are not even aware we know they are coming."  The vixen admiral was very sure of her words.  "You will be using Ixiah to sense their approach.  As we are not sure which path they are taking, we have two scout forces searching."

The general jumped in at this point, "as was mentioned in the main briefing, they are powerful psychics.  Ixiah's sister Reiya is acting as a receiver and amplifier.  If either of the two fleets picks up the sphere, she will know before you can send conventional communications and since those can be intercepted, we are relying on the psychics to relay the details.  If the enemy is alerted to our plans in anyway, our mission will be considerably harder."

The admiral brought up the star map again, "the territory you will be scouting through is relatively unexplored.  It is possibly home to space pirates and even alien reconnaissance forces.  If you come across alien outposts of any type, you must destroy them... capture them... whatever you deem appropriate.  In addition to the escort carriers for fighter power, we are also assigning you a troop cruiser with a full regiment of mecha troops to use as necessary.  You will need to coordinate operations with the colonel assigned to command those troops as he will be your ground operations commander."

"Any specific questions captain... commander?"
"Ha ha! The fun has been doubled!"

"I trust that your faith in these psychics is not misplaced." MacDuff said. He was somewhat unconfortable with the idea, but trusted in his superiors. "Such things are far from my area of expertise..."

The Commander straightened. "I will increase ground operations training with the fighter squadrons. I have no further comments."

"Are there any estimates on the size of the alien naval force accompanying the sphere, and what are our orders on the encounter of any such force?" Morgan paused and considered renegade forces and alien outposts. "Are we authorized to use Ixiah for the purposes of gathering intelligence from any alien outposts on the exact path of the sphere or hostile fleet movements, conducting psy-ops for ground forces and for determining in advance the approaches of hostile craft; be it renegade or alien?"

Of course, he realized, that this is a bit too trusting of something that most people would not believe; but he is never one to question the validity of anything until after testing. Nothing else. He told himself internally. "Nothing else, ma'am, sir."

The admiral nodded at the responses and concerns of her subordinates, "we understand your concerns with placing so much trust in an untrusted technique, but it was effective in the past.  Still we are also relying on boosted range Mass Sensors to detect an object that massive moving through 'hyperspace'."  She paused to flip through a virtual clipboard, "As for the estimate on the size of the naval forces accompanying the sphere, we have an estimate equivalent to a system fleet, about half our size.  It should not exceed our own fleet size at its maximum potential size."

The general addressed Morgan directly, "you are authorized to utilize Ixiah in any capacity you see fit, unlike his sister he is considered some type of warrior among his people... some type of psychic knight or such, his explanations are... difficult to understand and chaotic... so I'm not exactly sure how that works.  He seems to 'like' us and has been very helpful, but do not let that lull you into complacency... if confronted with others of his kind or those that consider themselves his masters, he may turn on you.  We've found him to be trustworthy, but he may have little choice."

"Now if no one has any further questions, you are dismissed from this private conference and as the strategy meeting is winding down, I suggest you catch some sleep.  The fleet will be jumping to the staging area the day after tommorrow at 0500 to link-up with our last fleet components.  Your scouting group will proceed on mission at 0800 from the staging area."  The admiral closed her virtual clipboard and stretched, mental fatigue is a bit more obvious in virtual environments.  "I think I shall retire for the moment and catch some rest."

The two Raptors Glided into the bay.  After they setdown on the recovery pads the bay pressurised. Kal and Dom shut down the LAMs and climbed from the cockpits, signing them over to the support crews they headed to the debrief.

Steping out of the debrief, Kal set off to his quarters only to find a Dear John letter from Tanya waiting in his electronic mail. Now in a rather foul mood he headed down the marine's gym. After taping his hands up he headed over to one of the speed bags and began to pound on it.

A salute, just before the conference closed, then he opens another secure link to the bridge and addresses communications-- albeit making sure that MacDuff heard him, "Please advise Major Kanzoria, any ISIS officers and Ixiah; of a meeting at 0800 tomorrow." He pauses, and quickly amends, "If possible with the latter."

Morgan then turns his attention to MacDuff. A stern look-- perhaps of appraisal, then he spoke. "Sorry. No time for pleasantries, Commander MacDuff. You, as well, will be attending that meeting as I need to address matters with the escorting carriers with you. If there is no other inquiry, you are dismissed." Tomorrow is going to be a long day. Now, where is that stress ball?

"... If there is no other inquiry, you are dismissed."

"None, sir." MacDuff replied. "0800 tomorrow." The second phrase was directed at no one in particular, but was intended to reassure both the captain and himself that he would be on time for the meeting. MacDuff exited the briefing room and headed for his quarters, intending to catch up on some work before taking the admiral's suggestion to get some rest.

His thoughts dwelled on the ISIS personnel and that Ixiah character everything depended on. He wondered how one could interact with a wielder of psychic forces - or military intelligence personnel. He still wasn't quite sure what to expect, having just been assigned to First Officer. On top of everything, he might be involved with ground operations, another field he was unaccustomed to. However, the commander was determined not to slip up during this assignment. Aside from the obvious personal reasons, the fate of a vast group of soldiers and civilians alike could potentially be affected should anything go awry during the operations.

I'll have to write a scenario for fighter operations in atmosphere... account for mechanized troop concentration, possible orbital bombardment... and maybe 'psychic ops', though I don't think anyone's ever tried to account for that variable...

The communications chief nodded, "aye sir."  He opened a channel to Major Kanzoria, "Sir, the captain has established a meet at 0800 tomorrow.  You, any of your officers and the one called Ixiah are requested to be in attendance."

The major displayed no emotions, "Lieutenant Kudo and I shall be there, I'm afraid Ixiah is still trying to adjust to the distance between him and his sister and he is not feeling well.  I will have to decline to have him in attendance at this time."

"understood sir."  The Comm chief closed the connection and opened one to the captain, "Major Kanzoria and a Lieutenant Kudo will be in attendance, but he declined to include Ixiah, sir."

"You might want to save some of that for the battles to come. I have a feeling we're gonna get into some pretty big stuff when we get out there. I'm interested to see what they have for ground troops myself. Get a chance to see how they measure up to us. Aye, Ben?"

INARI Class Cruiser, Revelation - Conference Room

At 0800 the next day, the meeting was scheduled to happen.

Major Kanzoria and Lieutenant Kudo were early enough to already be seated and waiting for the captain and commander.  The poor sergeant assigned to the room, was already run ragged by nearly unreasonable morning beverage requests from the two ISIS officers.

Major Kanzoria was an atypical coyote in all respects physically, except for his olive green eyes, somewhat extra bushy tail and his very fox-like markings.  Something about him made it neigh impossible to determine his age based on appearances, he seemed to be relatively young, but his rank and manner belayed any assumptions along those lines.  His uniform also shows many campaign ribbons and approximately 10 + years of service bars.

Lieutentant Kudo was different, obviously young and lacking in field experience, he possesses no campaign ribbons on his uniform, only has single 5 year bar for time in service recognition and his attire is perfectly neat, clean and polished.  His species is feline, cloud leopard to be exact with typical markings.

Absent from this meeting is Ixiah as the major had conveyed earlier yesterday.

Lingering outside the closed door into the conference room is Major Atkinson, he seems to be waiting for the Captain.
"Ha ha! The fun has been doubled!"

Commander MacDuff arrived at the conference room right on schedule. Slowing slightly as he approached the door, he glanced at the major that was waiting outside before entering. The two officers already present and the commander looked each other over as MacDuff took his seat.

For the time being, no officer present showed any signs of initiating conversation.

He kept walking, as he spoke, towards the room. "If you'll excuse me."

~Outside~

The major saluted briefly, "with all due respect Captain, I'm not nearly that petty, I was just concerned as I was not informed of it and they do not need them.  I'm well aware of the classified nature of things, I afterall have higher security clearance then you do sir and far more connections.  My concern now is with the physical condition of the 'guest'."  He paused to clear his throat and handed Morgan a report, complete with holo-references, "he shows physical injuries consistant with severe beatings, now I know ISIS holds special dispensation orders allowing their operatives leeway to complete missions utilizing any methods, but certainly this is unnecessary as the cooperation of these aliens has already been assurred."

He paused and tapped his finger to his forehead, "one other thing sir, I would suggest meeting with Colonel Nexx, he is the ground operations commander for our expedition and he has more information on what operations Intelligence expects us to undertake... he'll likely be more revealing then Kanzoria."

~Inside~

Major Kanzoria stared at the *closed* door leading out for a long few moments and smiled, he then turned to Commander MacDuff, "Commander, your ship really must stock more spring sprig white darjeeling tea."

The lieutenant twirled his cup, "and a proper arabica coffee would be good as well Commander."

... Spring sprig white darjeeling tea... proper arabica coffee...

The commander had no clue what variety of tea the major was talking about, but he did have a passing acquaintance with the variety of coffee mentioned.

"Well, I'm not exactly the ship's cook," MacDuff began. "And I don't know about you, but I gave up on coffee – and caffeine – a while ago. I found it to have more detrimental effects than desirable ones..." His voice trailed off.

He thought he had heard noises from outside the room, but the door made, well, a better door than a window. Hoping his anxiety wasn't too obvious, he glanced back at the other two officers. MacDuff wished the meeting could start soon...

Before the captain entered the room, Lieutenant Kudo was making notations in his notebook that seemed to perfectly coincide with everyone of MacDuff's fidgets, pauses and small bouts of anxiety.

When the captain entered, the lieutenant made note of the time and recorded it in his book.

The major smiled in a genuinely cheerful fashion, far too cheerful for this hour of the morning, "Ah the pleasantries, I so do love this part.  I am glad to be welcomed here Captain and I wish to thank you for the tea, but as I have requested from your subordinate, I would like to have your galleys stock some spring sprig white Darjeeling tea.  Very nice ship you have, your staff is very benevolent in their demeanor and towards their fellow beings, too bad the universe is full of dangerous creatures, harmless as they may appear for the moment, but a darkness lingers at their souls."

"Yes and some fine arabica, this robusto is a little too acidic."  Lieutenant Kudo remarked.

"Yes, well enough with the small talk.  I imagine you wish to discuss our tactical mission.  As it stands we are hunting the hunters, our primary mission is determination of the sphere's approach.  However we have 3 to 5 secondary objectives.  The first is a pirate sweep of sector 3301.3, any pirates found are to be neutralized.  The second to fifth objectives involve checking each of the energy signatures represented on this star chart,"  The major points to his portable holomap, "as indicated in these locations.  We are to neutralize enemy presence, if any, in these locations and gather intelligence.  For these missions, I have been authorized to utilize your special forces teams to secure information and enemy assets."

Lieutenant Kudo smiled, "we won't be able to just nuke these sites from orbit, we'll need to bombard defenses and make planetary landings.  Our troops are not to attempt holding actions at enemy installations though."

With only the token glares at the fox vanishing into the distance, Absalom happily joins the Master Sergeant and his friend where they get joyously drunk and enjoy themselves immensely.

Which is what would have happened if not for a small and rowdy group of crewmen from one of the Lycan ships.

To make a long story short, a Chief Petty Officer incorrectly insulted the sexual preference and promiscuity of the Master Sergeant.  The Master Sergeant kindly corrected the Chief and offered to buy him and his friends a round of drinks.  The Chief declined by pouring the other sergeant's (the lapine friend) drink on the floor and punching Absalom.

A small bar altercation ensued.

Master Sergeant Orlo laid a full on punch into the Chief as he yelled, "that's for calling me a homosexual tail-raiser!"

Orlo was many things, but that was not one of them.  He was well groomed, fastidiously neat and sensitive... which gave many the impression he played for the other team, but in actuality he was just well raised and taught.

Sergeant Dixon smashed a bottle of wine over the head of one of the petty officers, "bloody lousy waste of a good merlot."

This lapine on the other hand, well who really knows... he makes it so hard to tell as each day his actions and mannerisms change with the winds.

The meeting continued, merely specifics about their objectives, which is to say that details were scarce.  The only thing that intelligence has had to go on, regarding the second to fifth objectives is that the energy signatures match the alien emanations.

Both Captain Summers and Commander MacDuff get the impression that the ISIS Major believes he is in command of the operation, and to a limited extent he is.

[ooc: briefly utilizing Morgan... sadly I'm not sure how he would react in this situation.]

Morgan nodded patiently as he reviewed the holomap.  "We will sweep sector 3301.3 for pirates and then move onto the first alien site.  If you have need of the Special Forces, you need only request them and we will dispense them as necessary.  You will need to defer to Colonel Nexx to coordinate ground actions, I will be meeting with him and the ship COs after we are finished here."

Morgan paused briefly before wrapping up, "Commander MacDuff, Major Kanzoria, do you have anything further?"

Major Kanzoria merely smiled, "No, not at all Captain Summers."

"Commander MacDuff, Major Kanzoria, do you have anything further?"

The Commander shook his head and replied in the negative.

After this, he took the opportunity to brush down some of his ruffled feathers. He hadn't learned many more useful details in this meeting either. If there were more of these kinds of meetings, he was going to be even more flustered than usual, which was not a good thing considering that the Major and Lieutenant themselves were nearly impossible to figure out, but appeared to know exactly how to ruffle his feathers – both literally and colloquially speaking. MacDuff sighed internally, and decided he would go to his quarters and wash up a bit after the meeting was over.
