I use my own site for avatars, but I also use Photobucket for other stuff and it hasn't let me down yet.
The maximum avatar size is 175x175, but if it's wider than a certain amount (like mine) you'll get scrollbars if you're watching as guest.

Provided you're registered to both, they both work fine. And registering is free and easy, so it's your choice.

From what I understand, imageshack appears to drop the images after a while.

That might be a misunderstanding, however, as that -might- be just in guest mode, and if you register, you can work around that. Like Tapewolf, I have my own server, though, so can't give a lot of detail about usage.

As Gabi says, either will work, provided you pay attention to the limitations of the service itself, and the avatar image size restrictions on the forum.

That's how it works. If you're registered, it won't drop your images. Unless you drop the cookie that kept you logged in and forget to log in again before uploading the image.

If you need it for safekeeping, Photobucket. If you just want to upload something quickly, Imageshack.

Hard to believe that a few years ago, something as simple as hosting an image wasn't that easy.

Thanks everybody, I think I'll stick with photobucket for the moment.

Its true the image hosting was hard not so long ago, but a decade or so back only a small percentage of people could even access the internet, like mobile phones it took off in a way nobody could have predicted.

Yes, it got complicated when free web hosts stopped allowing remote linking. I still have a few images hosted on Geocities with their extension changed to TXT from that period.
