Strauss does have legitimate concerns with how many times she's investigated fraud on this very subject, it seems. It's entirely reasonable she'd be skeptical of the claim that this time, Jakob actually has made the groundbreaking breakthrough. Although, while she does seem to be coming around to realizing that, yes, Jakob has found the real deal this time...

...can't help but feel drawing attention to the fact that Daryil can just blow off this entire thing if he were so inclined is not really helping Jakob's case. "And, what would you say, if you WERE in fact a fraud just like everyone else? Are you suggesting we just stand by and let you get away with it?" This actually seems to kinda relate to how in DMFA, Biggs has made the observation that Furrae is actually kind of a shit place, where singular individuals possess such an obscene amount of direct power that they can ignore any form of consequence from anything not on their level.

Yeah, this scene has had a lot of rewrites and tweaks, not least in light of subsequent DMFA revelations.  Realistically you have two things which need to be kept in tension, as Strauss will point out in the next page.

Jakob is correct in that the Achilles heel of the Tri-wing is that they are dependent upon having a clan.  Therefore, storming in and threatening to massacre clan members is not a threat you want to make lightly because Daryil may perceive it as an existential threat to himself that needs to be Dealt With.  And while we know that such measures are unlikely to be as heavy-handed as those previously employed by the Dragon race, the fact is that Daryil is a newbie when it comes to being a Tri-wing, and nobody, not even Jakob, knows exactly how he is likely to behave in the face of such a threat.

Meanwhile, Strauss is also correct in that even Daryil must accept that he can't be given a free pass, as she will shortly put it.  (Did you want spoilers?  Because that's how you get spoilers.)

As to that, you will have to ask Merlin.  Strauss does appear to be moving into lynx territory.

It probably wouldn't help that air of tension that he's a newer tri-wing and as a result has a bit more tenuous of a position to begin with.
