We haven't really been given the specifics of how conversion works in DMFA either, only that it requires a living Clan Leader and a blood relation to that clan. Taun's stepson "underwent a ritual" to become a Cubi, so it's likely a bit more complicated than simply placing the convert into their Clan Leader's hand for a few minutes. And the conversion of the Siar survivors into Seme's clan doesn't seem to have been done by Seme herself.

Howeve, the fact that Fa'Lina was left permanently without a clan following Hizell's genocide implies that a living member of that clan is also necessary, otherwise she'd have been able to adopt one of her children's relatives from another clan into her own.
