May seem like what Pegasus said... but in the end Merlitz and Nitemyste both didn't actually disappear at Lost Lake but Merlitz after leaving Lost Lake to return to adventuring and Nitemyste looking for him. Of course that doesn't make "the kill zone that makes up Destania's family" any safer and especially Pyroduck has a say in this because of the choice he was given by his Phoenix friends...

An example of having a higher Wisdom than Intelligence, he had the wisdom to want to make sure they weren't going to kill an innocent person (especially wise considering how readily available shapeshifting magic is either to learn or to purchase).
