I thought this was very informative and clears up many of the myths.

They were just nuts

So, no video game involvement, no online goth group, no cultist mentality.  They were just a pair of lunatics who went unrecognized for what they really were until it was too late.

This is why parents should ALWAYS invade their kids' privacy!  The parents need to find out which of their offspring is going silently insane BEFORE said offspring go on a shooting/bombing rampage.   :P

Besides, I have always taken the stance that it the parent's home, it's the parents rules.  You don't like it, live out on the street ya little parasites.   >:3

You know...I really don't see how you can joke about this subject.  How anyone can, really.

The only thing I do agree about is the fact that parents should be a little more involved in their kids' lives.  Not so far as privacy invasion though.  Case in point, my parents trust that I don't get up to anything stupid, and I honor their trust.  It's just that a lot of parents these days seem to want to not blame themselves even though it could be partially their fault that some things happen.

Another case in point, in my own neighborhood: bunch of kids hang out together.  All but one swear like sailors.  Their parents also swear that badly.  Obvious problem: kids pick up things from their parents.  But, what do the parents do?  They blame the only kid that doesn't curse in front of them.

Just like what they did with these kids before.  As far as I've heard, I've heard blame being cast everywhere but the parents.

People are stupid, that's just how I see it.

Third case in point, thus: this subject is years old and should just be left alone.

i'm personally mystified about how the parents couldn't notice their kids accumulating a small arsenal of weapons, or the fact that those things would cost a fair bit of dough.

Dragons, it's what's for dinner... with gravy and potatoes, YUM!
Sparta? no, you should've taken that right at albuquerque..

You bring up two items.

1. Have you ever kept something from your parents? I had numerous privacy stashes, and my personal space was well respected. It is not too difficult to perform this feat. The article mentions that one of the boys was charismatic enough to say what had to be said when he had to say it. This does not necessarily mean he actually did so, or did so with the intent to cover a supposed true, sinister nature. But it is a possibility.

2. The article concludes that money was the single-most limiting factor. They could have done much more if they had the dough, which they did not. One of them worked a minimum-wage paying job, and the goods were bought with that.

Virtually every one of your conclusions is a possible one. Whether it's a sad neglect of parenting, or something else.

I might add, they both had cars by then, not any car, one had a BMW and the other a Honda. So I wonder if they weren't spoiled as well, spoiler parents tend to be really ignorant to their children's grouth

hiding a number of armaments, ammunition and home-made explosives is considerably harder than hiding porn under the mattress, I assume

That was kind of the point of the report.  They weren't particularly 'into' anything that led to it.  They were just crazy and no one noticed.
