Title: Chapter 5 is up and ready to kick your... Talmi
Post by: stiletto on June 15, 2008, 12:10:04 AM
And here we are, with the start of a new chapter, with episode two close on its way. This one is full of madness, I promise. We start with some family madness, and learn that there are some universals in every world. Dads, yea...

Trying to condense these into single topic right now to keep the conversation and flow going. At least until more people start posting in this section of the forum.

For anyone who missed it, look in the bonus section for the week of monochrome pages that answered questions from the readers.

Oh, we get to meet god in this chapter too.

The son's name is Slider. Like those little slider puzzles.

Cypher, Jigsaw, Sudoku, and Slider. Yep, family is crazy.

Oh my god.

That is the coolest family name pattern I have ever heard. XD Kudos to Jigsaw.

Next page is up! Well, maybe not quite yet, but it'll be up in a few minutes and if it's not up by the time I post this, Jig needs to learn to type faster :P

I will forever think that last panel looks like the two of them purring heavily, especially given Meridian's face.

And Breya... sounds like a kind of cheese. Say cheese Breya. Say cheese when you take a picture.

And if this is the attitude they have with their kids, no wonder they join reality tv shows.

And..... here's the bonus page.

I always thought the Cybees were a neat little part of the LR world. They're like... personal assistants so to say (and I'm sure yes, to some, they are in THAT way). Kind of like nannies for the kids, Jigsaw's has been seen in the con pamphlet things.

And oh my, what could be this they're discussing?

"Hey! Look! Listen"?

Also, I'm a little surprised that Sudoku's so... apathetic about whether or not her sister survives. Oo Though I guess the "body bag" comment Cypher made a while back makes a bit more sense, unless he wasn't referring to him being the one to put Jigsaw in a body bag. :B

There's something I've kind of noticed about how Sudoku's been drawn, too. In the pages she first appeared in (http://www.lastres0rt.com/archive.php?arch=comics&page=29), she looked old enough to be in her late twenties. Largely because it looked like she was wearing lipstick. She looks much younger in the recent pages. How old is she, anyway?

probably a strange question but I can not find a definition for "enturbulating."
Is the word spelled correctly?
Title: Re: Chapter 5 is up and ready to kick your... Talmi
Post by: llearch n'n'daCorna on June 27, 2008, 03:13:44 AM
Yes.

Bascially, it's a poke at Scientology, and they prefer not to have their internal vocabulary explained on the Internet. I believe "enturbulating" someone is the process they go through to cleanse the body of the Thetan, which they believe is the soul (I think - possibly mind) of long-dead aliens who inhabit the bodies of every human. Or something. It didn't really make a lot of sense to me, but then, I don't need anyone else to tell me how screwed up my head is...

Of those reputable psychologists who have looked at the process, I understand many of them claim it's all a lot of mumbo-jumbo designed to hypnotise the trainee. I also understand that the Scientologists charge extremely large sums of money for this. Draw your own conclusions...

I think the line "Were off to save your sister from helping herself to her new vampiric nature" would be more appropriate but they don't know that she's a blood sucker.

As much as I wanna see it, and probably will with time, I wanna see the family conversation that goes something like this...
Jigsaw:  Mom, Dad, I'm a vampire...
Parents: :U... :explosion

Only because it seems almost appropriate.

There's a new monster in town, unfortunately it is not the green eyed monster of jealousy. I wonder how Jigsaw will explain the new hickey on her new subordinate... Or is the doctor expecting such an attempt and is prepared for such a move.

Place your bets everyone, place your bets.

The fur will hide any bruising. This is one of the interesting features of a furry community; it's also an interesting point when considering the less savoury side of humanity - if a man hits his wife, the bruise is fairly obvious; if a furry hits his (or her, for that matter) partner, the bruise will be less obvious due to the fur hiding it, and also cushioning the blow...

All interesting details.

On a side note, Jigsaw updated a few minutes late last night. I had to call her to remind her :P (Not that she needed it, but it was fun to poke at her about it)

It's a sign of her inexperience, really.

Jigsaw's eyes change (at this point, at least) with any instance of her "transformation" into her more vampire-like traits -- in this case, to get her fangs out -- and they're often one of the early signs of her transformations, period.

She'll get better about it eventually, but it'll take more time for her to get used to it (and more importantly, tell WHEN she's doing it so she can control it).

The lineart that's just her red irises is a slightly lighter red (well, pink), and the majority of the rest of the image is covered with a somewhat transparent layer of dark blue to make it look nighttime-y. I removed the blue for various portions like the backlighting on Jigsaw's ears, her eyes, and to make the brighter spots of color in the other panels.

If you want it in plainer english, I'd have to get out screenshots.

Screenshots would be truly wonderful, but I get the idea.

Mostly it's a matter of "what colour red?" type thing, which I suspect I'll mess up due to lack of practice. I was actually thinking in terms of colouring Mystiqe's image, and making some of the bits glow in green, as per the example... which I suspect I'll keep thinking about, but not actually do...

And is daisy restrained there?  I can see arm restraints, and I wonder if there are leg restraints also.  Well, leg restraint seeing as daisy only has one leg now.

And what is that beeping sound in the third and fourth panels?

My dislike for vampirism makes me glee in happyness that Jigsaw didn't go through with it.

Though Jigsaw's comment makes me wonder... Are vampires here similar to vampires in Hellsing with Alucard.

I like pannel 2 WTFAID Jigsaw and the last pannel sexy Jigsaw.

bloodwork is removing or inserting blood- depending on the type done it can be mostly painless or very uncomfortable.

a while back i was so poor that to keep rent for my family and whatnot i found a place that would buy my plasma- because it was not whole blood i could donate twice a week, instead of the standard several week waiting period between full blood donations. the process involves drinking a full gallon of water, being sat in a moderately comfortable chair, and hooked up to a machine with a very thick needle inserted into the crux of my elbow, the attendants would almost always get it wrong, have to wiggle the needle around to hit my veins, occasionally have to switch to my other elbow, and then i would watch my blood pass over my chest through a thick straw to go into the machine. once in the machine it would measure a certain amount of blood, then centrifuge it to remove the plasma, and then turn to reverse to cram the red pudding back into my arm, this is the part that if not done correctly can cause severe bruising, internal bleeding, and loss of using your arm for a while. after about an hour to an hour and a half of watching this process (bring a book, staring at your blood is a BAD thing) they finally finish, and attach a bag of icy cold saline solution, which is inserted back into your arm to compensate for the jug of urine colored liquid they extracted from your blood, its a very weird feeling to actually trace icewater as it goes through your cardiovascular system, and for some unknown reason your mouth tastes like rubber. after all that they give you anywhere between 20 dollars and 35 dollars, depending on what day you do it, what time of day, and if you did it twice in one week. spend the next 3 hours or so trying not to use the arm you donated with, or both if they botched the first try, and marvel at how stupid it is to put a bandage around your elbow.

is it at all sad that i would willingly go through that twice a week for a grand total of about sixty bucks a week?

back to the comic.

well, now we know that daisy gave permission, so its not like the relationship is going to be strained beyond the level of "great, now everyone can see i have a hickey".

i really like how jiggy goes from the 'i dont have to like this' look to a happy kitty drinking milk look, its cute, especially with how enthusiastic she is.

and boy, is she enthusiastic, i would almost imagine one morning she wakes up with a potbelly and daisy wakes up a shriveled raisin. burp.

mewl, interesting sound, probably did some damage with that crunch, but the real question is who the corpse is? cant wait to find out.

No, Brunhidden. I really can not believe you went through that. Though really, I would have stopped at the word needle. Nothing's going through my skin.

And now I notice the facial expressions and the increasing enthusiam. So... what got chomped?
Also, the look on her face in panel one? Priceless.

actually i did, for a little over two months. and i HATE needles, always have, severe paranoia of anything that pierces, burrows, perforates, or in any way violates my body.

and i would guess thats the sound of jigsaw snapping due to being shocked, and chomping something such as the trachea or the jugular vein- nothing lethal but probably just a healthy crunch that will leave some serious marks

i know how you feel (and i found it llearch) blood has never been my favorite thing and on top of that to accidentally hurt your friend. it's one of the harshest things to deal with short of accidentally killing them.

I don't mind needles so much, since I've had a lot of experience with them. During 2004 I was fairly screwed up, so I was getting a lot of blood tests taken. By now I've learned that if I get blood taken or tested, I prefer butterfly needles, because they don't hurt during insertion.

I digress, though. The art is really good in this page. I like the expressions - they're a lot more animated than the expressions used in page 83, which kind of irked me. Very nice.

It picked up weak life signs; one presumes there's a standard procedure for gaining attention in case of vital signs being low, and that Gangrel is merely implementing said procedure.

Obviously, said procedure consists of "scream loudly for the fuzz" ;-]

There are times and places when you don't want that to kick in. This is probably one of them...

The polite responce would be "Enough," the fun answer would be "more than you got."

I don't think Jigsaw has enough room to add a subspace storage matrix to her pouch, despite adding near infinite item storage capability those accessories can take up a lot of room.
Though it does bring up the thought of what would happen if she needed to be searched...

Random thought...
I might be slow on the uptake but Daisy and Jigsaw are related!?
I may have ignored the hints and inuendos in the last dozen episodes or so but how are they related?  Did Daisy marry into the family or does Jigsaw have some human in her DNA?
The lader would explain why she's a Talmi vampire when it was stated that only humans could be vampires.

We aren't sure yet. I think Daisy's some distant aunt of Jiggity's. I'm also thinking it might just be a godparent thing. It's obvious that they have some famalial social relation.

I'm definitly thinking it's a bag of holding in there. How else would Jig not feel Gangrel in there? Again, I ask how she forgot about the thing! ... Well, space travel... signing up for a deadly game show... some other stuff... ok, yeah, I'd forget too.

True, but that pouch must be big and roomy and the Jig-stomach-side of it must be really numb or something. I feel odd shaped books through a backpack, Jig certainly must feel Gangrel through a layer of flesh.
Title: Re: Chapter 5 is up and ready to kick your... Talmi
Post by: llearch n'n'daCorna on July 27, 2008, 05:12:51 PM
Difference is where and how it's placed.

On your back, there's a thin layer of flesh over a pile of bones; any nerves in there can get pinched relatively easily. On Jig's belly, there's a) a certain amount of padding, b) a fairly stretchy pouch (go look for a young kangaroo getting out of a pouch; you'd be scared just how much those things can stretch) and c) I suspect a certain, evolutionarily necessary, lack of sense of touch. Some pressure will be sensed, but not much more, since if the baby decides to kick, it's a good idea if that doesn't make mama throw up.

And that's not getting into the effect of fur dampening the feeling; since that may or may not be the case, and it depends on precisely how the nerve endings are laid out. Humans are special that way; we're based more on something that spends rather a lot of time in the water than something that doesn't particularly like getting wet.

Make sense?

:ipod "Jigsaw has an inventory, doo-dah, doo-dah..."

Short Version: Jigsaw has a little inventory that functions as an effective Bag of Holding -- a "Pouch Protector" if you will.  Sound still gets out though (and you kinda want it to -- especially if that's where you keep your phone!)

Long Version: The Physical form of the bag (inside her pouch, at least) is a little semi-circle pocket of fabric that fits inside the pouch and more-or-less "adheres" to the mouth of the pouch, effectively turning it into Last Resort's very own version of the Victoria's Secret Compartment.

For Talmi, anyway.

the wonder of kangaroo reproduction is that they can be a factory- one fetus pops out to use the pouch for part of its gestation which frees up the uterus so the roo can be knocked up again. in full swing a mother kangaroo has one fetus, one preemie in the pouch, and one joey which is probably still on milk and barely lets go of mommy's leg, and the male is probably ready to cram another one somewhere in the mix

I was thinking more precisely how the male "crams a new one in there". Since the child comes out inside the pouch, doesn't that mean he has to stick it in there? Or is it somewhat different than that, and I'm forgetting something?

its only about six inches ot the pouch, but for a wrinkly naked preemie thats a tough climb

although the ability to pause a pregnancy must rock so much

all of this super breeding is the reason why kangaroos are a pest in Australia and considered very large rats really. a hunter i spoke to about wild game said he once went to Australia, where you are allowed to shoot all the roos you want, provided you eat what you shoot. he had rooburgers coming out of his ears.

to elaborate, lets take a family of Talmi, one that for no particular reason named all their kids after balls, at the beach

heres beach, why did she just dump a bucket of ice down her shorts? to keep the drinks cold of course! on a hot beach one should never be more then arms reach from a cold beverage.

look over there, volley seems to be flirting with some cute college boys. she always had a lot of luck with boys, and they love her bikini. in high school she had seven kids, earning her the name 'clowncar'

and little ping, mischievous little sprite just filled her pouch with water and a surprised fish to dump on her brother golf who is sleeping in the sun.

golf.... has pouch envy, and thats one of the lesser reasons he is messed up

madmann, one presumes that generating the image and moving itself around chews through a hefty amount of power.

Not to mention the storage capacity; it's not like you can use the network, since it won't always be in range.

I find it mildly interesting that it's been more than 3 months since Gangrel was last charged, though. That's a fairly hefty battery right there; certainly knocks any of the current mobile phone batteries into a cocked hat...

Even so, that's still a heck of a battery life.
I used to have a pager that could run for a month on a AAA cell.  The Psion series 3 could run for about 72 hours solid on a pair of AAs.  This was 10 years ago.  I'd be horrified if there wasn't a substantial improvement in however many centuries away Last Resort is...

Oh, yes.

On the other hand, note that Gangrel started itself up from Corpse Mode back into full life mode by, uh, itself. Or herself, if you want to anthropomorphise a computer; personally I find they hate that...

This implies that in CM, information networks are shut down, but there's still some monitoring of the local situation, for some unknown trigger. And when out of CM, sufficient computational power to locate and connect to power supplies if necessary; note that she's chosen to charge herself back up - even a standing program to check for power if battery level is below x and then charge self is going to use a little power; depending on how the power is tapped, that could well take a bit of juice to locate, too.

That's more than your pager ever did. And phones talk back to the network; this is why even when they're asleep, they have worse battery life than pagers, which just listen, mostly. I think.

From what I can see, Gangrel is behaving more like a laptop - and a highly sophisticated, adaptable, and user-friendly one at that - than a phone. Not that the difference hasn't been getting less of late, but there are degrees of change in what Gangrel is doing - and the other two, for that matter - that we aren't anywhere near building. Take, for example, the conversation between the other two PDAs; the content implies that they're aware of things that their owners aren't, and filter the information as needed; decision trees like that are serious horsepower, and (going back to the original point) suck juice like nothing on earth; people are surprisingly parallel, and doing that sort of thing in hardware is Not Easy.

Lots of interesting things going on, though, and I agree - in a couple centuries, battery life will have improved enough to scare the bejesus out of your average 20thC tech. Picture a battery the size of an AA that can power the east coast of the states for a week...

I had a watch that lasted for 7 years without changing the battery!

And considering she was quiet all that time, most of her systems were probably shut down, and then reactivated in some sort of emergency fashion as her battery was reaching critical levels. That or she got bored. There must have been a high degree of shut down, since she didn't hear people talking all that time, even at the end when she started shouting.

I usually get the fairly cheap casio watches, the watch gets lost or falls apart before the battery dies.

Yes. My point was, she still had to have something turned on to trigger the restart - even if just a battery monitor.

In comic 91 Gangrel the little green android seems to about the size of a large doll but she fitted inside a fairly small pouch, is she collapsible or shrink to fit or something?

I think the "pretty green girl" is a hologram.

The actual unit behind it all is fairly dinky, or so I gather; sort of like a closed phone. Jig might be able to enlighten further.

I'm gonna stick with the rationale of the "extradimensional pocket" Jigsaw has. I'll try to leave room to explain it a little better in-comic later, but the whole explanation goes side by side with explaining "vlinking". (Spoiler - the "V" is for "Vector")

As for the actual size, Gangrel is approximately 1' from head to toe, which only makes her "slightly" larger than a Beanie Baby in practice (and about as stuffed as one as well, since she needs the flexibility to move her joints) -- small enough to fit in plenty of places anyway, in other words. (The measurements are a rough approximation of where her head would come up to if I had a real-life model sitting on my shoulder.)

Title: Re: Chapter 5 is up and ready to kick your... Talmi

the answer is the litrium battery- its kind of slightly radioactive in a safe and controled way, the degrading of the litrium inside produces electrical power directly. the battery generates a steady and constant flow of electricity, needing no recharge, but has a half life of ten years- thus every ten years you loose half your power, but then its probably best to get a battery that originally supplies 3-5 times your power needs and say the battery has a 30 year life

to be in the 12 inches tall area and have that much processing power nand movement capabilites those things might be bigger on the inside (vector manipulation).
That being the case it would be easier to replace the batteries with a fusion cell that has a minimum active life of 20 years.  No need to recharge or replace batteries but it would probably not be economically fiesable.

most likely it has a normal battery which is recharged just like ours today in addition to a very tiny reactor cell or litrium battery- mostly to slow down how fast the battery is used, or if turned completely off slowly recharge it.

My vote is that you add onto the info on the cast pages and add more charactor info so that we can see/read more information on who's who and what they did.

not to mention put a spoiler warning so that people like me will read the cast pages first, even if there is no spoilers.

It would be nifty if the cast page eventually listed all of the executioners and criminals by team and some bios were added for the Vaeos.

The eventual idea has always been to at least have at least all players + the Vaeo Family listed, as I consider them the main batch to actually worry about. However, cast images (while quick) still take time so there's a bit of a guessing game there as to how long that should take me.

Right now I'm just trying to think up something a little more immediate to help reduce the apparent confusion -- there's the Wikifur (http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Last_Resort) page, but that's only so much.

In all fairness, you'll have a hard time finding a Paladin Retriever anywhere on earth, considering they're illegal to own / breed / sell on the planet. Most of this is due to the snobbishness of the Westminister / AFC / Purina Kennel Club, as they insist that a true dog not only does not have scales, but also does not eat other dogs.

On more civilized planets, Paladin Retrievers are not only perfectly legal, but your average small yappy dog is reduced to the role of "Feeder Mouse", and in your average "alien" supermarket aisle, you will find the cans of dog food just across from the cans of dog.

Ah, so it was scales?  I wasn't sure - my initial guess was that it was armour.  On the assumption that he/she was a guard rather than an animal, I was going to ask all kinds of questions about the race history.  That's kind of moot now  :3

well in the universe seen here i think it would be hard to walk into a grocery store and not find someones uncle frank in the butcher case- species would probably determine if they are horrified, horrified that someone of clan Hmor would be sold for such a low price, or buy a bit for the BBQ tomorrow

the paladin retriever really tells me alot about the universe here- it tells me that humanity and other species have commingled for quite a while and some ideas have traveled from species to species. most likely another race had a kind of yodeling frog to fill the role that humans have dogs, seeing how superior a pet which is not a frog and does not yodel would be, the pet caught on and was later improved.

now, just imagine how they react to Piranha Pomeranians

its kudos though, lesser authors would have populated the universe with creatures such as 'hogmonkeys' and 'altorian winged chipmunks' just to make every planet earth with slightly tweaked animals to give it a different feel. it irritates me when someone writes so that every animal is an earth animal preceded by the name of a different planet and give it a freaky super power

The "Paladin" part of the name came from the thick, armor-like scales they have on their legs and spine. (Oh, and the whole "will hunt you down and BITE YOUR HEAD OFF" part of their stereotyped personality. Paladins are not known for being open to negotiations after all.)
