Title: [Art] Mousey Machinations (Updated 11/30/11)
Post by: Nyil on July 03, 2010, 11:54:59 PM
Well, I guess I'll just upload a few things of mine, then!

The first two were colored in a way inspired (read: stolen) from Mab, in that I colored them with markers and shaded them with color pencils. Copic markers and Prismacolor pencils. The last one was just a little fun with the pen tool in Photoshop CS.

Heh, those are awesome, and I like how they all came out.  'Specially the one in the middle. :3  Love the outfit in the first one too.  I daresay you'll fit right in here in the art section.

I love the last one, but then, I'm a sucker for b&w fantastic artwork. Like Frank Miller, for example...

Very nice!

A bit reminiscent of "Code Name: Hunter" in the colouring/shading style.

Hehehe, thanks, guys!

I don't think I've actually ever heard of Code Name: Hunter. I think I might have to check them out, though!

I like the colouring and the linework for all of them. The highlights on the hair are really silky looking. The hands look really good, too.

There's a few spots where the shadows throw me off a bit. The top of the arm in in the first pic, and the light on the legs.

I love your art style, by the way.

Ah, thank you very much! I was thinking the shading was a little odd, myself. I'll keep that in mind next time - I'll shade the sketch before I move on to shading the colored piece just to be extra sure things are working out!

My scanner is broken, which is... why this turned out so very red. In reality, the only red I used was on that cloth. I'm not sure it turned out as well as it could have, though, should I have inked in the outline/folds?

I'm arranging a portfolio for Midwest Furfest, most of which I plan to do traditionally. After about 10, maybe 15 images, I'll do a... less family friendly portfolio, I think.

Another thing for the PG-13 portfolio for Midwest Furfest. Man the rating of that thing just keeps climbing and climbing. Don't worry, nothing past PG-13 will be posted here. Just gotta... let people remember that this stuff is almost, ALMOST NSFW.

He looks mean... if not very well-protected. If he's going to fight in that kind of armor, he'd better make sure no enemy hits him.

A Warrior:
Beeeef Caaake!

The stance of his feet looks a bit stiff to me. Otherwise, the pose is great. That is a kickass sword too, it has a nice balance between fantasy and practical design.

The lighting looks better, too. Using dead black shadows with tonal shading is tricky, though.

IIRC, DMFA canon states that adventurers usually don't bother with armour because demons, dragons, 'cubi, etc. can tear through it with their bare hands. I notice, however, that he is covering his ass. Good thinking. *Sage Nod*

Mink:
D'awww! That is so sweet.

...I'm diabetic you know. This stuff is bad for my health.   >:3

Ach, feet. Yeah, feet tend to give me trouble, though in all honesty this is no excuse - the fact that I know the problem should be enough for me to fix it, but for some reason it's not. Oh well, time for me to do some studies!

I'll put a little more work into the shading - making something dynamic that really pops off the page is one of my goals for the moment, and your critique helps me get closer to that point every day. Thank you for your support!

The bell is only scary when there are cats around - ironically, it was a cat who put it there in the first place, and I just decided to keep it 'cause it was cute. Darned cats....

Your style of art is amazing.  :o  The critic in me looks for flaws that can't be attributed to artistic style, and finds none.

So, I haven't posted in like ages, and since I don't have any commission stuff that I did during MFF, this isn't going to be a gigantic post. I will, however, have art and some music to upload.

This is a full body conbadge - they'll be available soon for ordering, just $15 for full colors and stuff.

Other than that, here's some links to some tunes the band and I recorded on my little $20 tape recorder - be warned, these are mostly just doodles rather than performance pieces.

Conbadge: Damn, those are some very fine hands. The eyes seem super-wide-open... I don't know if that's intentional or not, or just part of your style. The rest of the face and figure has some very nice, subtle, expression to it tho.

Most of your work doesn't have a lot of contrast... that probably has to do with the media, but I figured I'd mention it.

...Those tunes are going on my iPod, by the way.

Oh yeah. I was basically just doing this as a way to see how fast I could get a full color thing done, so when I have to do it for, say, a con, I could crank them out relatively quickly. I plan to at LEAST get some white gel pens for highlight scribbles. I could always do some of that high contrast inking, though. I'd shade with the markers, but I don't have enough colors for that :c

Also, if you like that music, I suggest you check out Baal Tinne - they don't have anything on youtube, but check our their myspace page. Now THAT is some fine music.

Speaking of music, here's another upload of my band:

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4871175/

A few things about this before you click the link:
1.) It was recorded on my $20 tape recorder during practice, and in the first ten seconds you can hear me kick it across the floor by accident.
2.) It's being taken down in a few days 'cause it's just a scrap - you can hear people singing along in it, because we haven't played that set in YEARS and we were all playing by memory

That being said, enjoy! (for the record, I'm one of the fiddles in that - the one you can HEAR)

Fursona bookmarks, thinking of selling these alongside conbadges. What do you guys think?

If you want a bookmark or a conbadge of some sort, just shoot me a PM here or on FA. I'll keep about five slots open.

Conbadges:
Full Body: $20
Torso shot: $15
Head shot: $10
Bookmarks: $15

Prices include shipping and mailing and all that to the US, but don't include lamination since that kaboodle is really expensive. Sorry.

The brown on the left cheek doesn't quite seem to have the dimension that the rest of the cheek has. It looks like it's pressed down (about an inch) compared to the white around it.

Thanks a ton! It's always encouraging to hear that every now and then :)

Ever since I first met Mits, I've always pictured him shopping for fine wine at an expensive, classy liquor store wearing nothing but a utility kilt.

Nothing more.

I find your lingering bluelines interesting, but mostly they seem to give the impression of being unfinished. In an earlier "Sound of Music" posting, it sort of gave the impression of tears.
I like the great range and contrast within your works.  Your vent art freaks me out :|

The kilt looks really off centre, compared to his belt buckle and belly button. His pose seems really stiff, probably because of the limp left arm (his left), and the right shoulder looking like it's pulled up and back.

The shading on the deltoid/latissimus dorsi area looks really convincing. There's a distinct impression of shape and volume. I love the highlight on the bottle, and the vitality in the eyes.

that might be the foreshortening throwing you off, also don't forget that since kilts technically don't have any proper means of anchoring in the traverse, that they are liable to rotate slightly, it also depends largely on the article of clothing, which might have the fasteners/buttons off-centre.

I'm not completely sure that having your avatar in some kind of drug stupor is necessarily a good thing for an ID either, but I can't argue with the artwork.

I like the way you've done the cloth in these, by the way.  Very effective.

Great lighting on the hat! You've skipped out on the large ears you usually make for your characters on this one, but it makes it look more natural   :mowmeep The arm though needs more work. Still- awesome job.

Well, it WAS a speedpaint - basically cram a long process down into thirty minutes, with two layers. Sadly, anatomy is something that will have to be worked on next time. The huge ears aren't gone, either - just stuffed into the hat.
Thank you for reminding me to solidify my fundamentals a bit. Sometimes the basics do tend to escape me.

Yes, but not in the gym, sadly. And probably not in the way you're thinking.

... I didn't see you posting that anywhere, by the way. It's no good as a troll if you don't show people.

Yeah but... I don't want to get banned :<

Banned, sir? For posting your artwork? Whatever grounds would I have to ban you?

Heck, if _I_ banned you for posting art making fun of me, I suspect Mao or Darkmoon would promptly revert the ban. And laugh heartily at me. And rightly so - if I don't have the stones to laugh at myself, I'm in the wrong place. ;-]

I enjoy your speed paints. There is a rough quality to them that I really like. Polished compositions are nice, also, but sometimes seem sterile, lacking personality, almost "cookie cutter" in presentation.

Your speed paints have soul, personality. I hope you continue to evolve your art and share it with us. Thank you!

Thank you so much! There's something so sterile about a lot of really high technique digital art, it's something I'd really really REALLY like to avoid. The cautious sterility is just... lifeless to me. I'll continue to work on improving, so I can inject even more life and style into what I do!

I'm just going to go back to the Brady request for a moment - I LOVE how you did the background on that. I think that, out of your vast catalouge, that might be my favorite thus far.
