I missed this, but they're moving the server.
**EDIT**
QuoteOkay, move is going to happen in about 2 hours or so.
That is, now.
QuoteThere will be some interruption in service, since I need to halt everything while I do a final sync to the new machine.
Also, this is a secondary host I'm moving to. The initial choice I made... well, I put in an order, and 36 hours (and 2 emails) later, I still haven't heard a word from them, so I went with another, cheaper option, who was MUCH more responsive. We'll see how this works out. Please give me until 10AM CST, after that, if there are any problems, let me know. I'm real curious to see how the performance on this new system is.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. I quoted them because if the server hosting them went down, a link wouldn't work >:3
Ok, I know that now. Thanks! :D
But why should Comcast get between the browser and the server to tell you "can't be found"? Browsers can do that on their own, can't they?
Comcast is evil. You should all know that by now.
Actually, Verizon does the same thing. By transmitting their own message when the domain name or IP address is unable to be reached, it provides the ISP with an opportunity to send additional advertising to the end user. For example, they can forward the request to the search engine of their choice.
This has caused some problems. Imagine that I create an application that sends an HTTP request to www.missmab.com once an hour. Failure to get an HTTP response would mean that there is a problem with the server or a network problem preventing connection to the server. By providing their own "not found" page, the ISP prevents such diagnostic software from functioning correctly. I also some discussions questioning the legality of such actions since it is not compliant with the internet specifications.
Such reasons are why I use OpenDNS as my DNS provider. http://www.opendns.com/
Time Warner/Road Runner Cable started doing something like what Comcast did, but for a time they allowed you to opt out of it. So, I decided to use OpenDNS instead of RoadRunner as my DNS provider. Much more reliable and less downtime.
When my daughter went to Temple University (Philadelphia, PA), the ISP for her apartment building had one DNS server (I believe that it was in Colorado) servicing buildings scattered all over the country. As you can imagine, response was abysmal. I reset her computer to use the Temple University DNS server (after first checking with the IT group at Temple) and everything started working reliably.

How would I know anything about something I've never used?
I have Comcast, but I keep getting a Firefox "problem loading page" error rather than Comcast's "don't mind us, we suck" error. Normally Firefox tells me it can't load a page when my internet is down, but it's just missmab.com, all other sites are fine :/
I am sadded.

What, you've never heard somebody say "Comcast is evil"? I find that hard to believe
I'd be hesitant to say that Comcast is evil compared to other ISP's. Now if you said sloppy and prone to cutting corners, I would be more likely to agree.

Update 08:45 CST: The Planet just told me my server will "probably"
be setup in 2-3 hours. The move to this new VM won't even be done by
then, so if that happens, we'll just move straight into the physical
machine. Keep your fingers crossed.
QuoteXepher.net is currently experiencing problems.
Sorry for the trouble, but I'll try to have it back up ASAP.
Apparently this new host simply can't handle the load, so
I'm moving us to a new one again. It's going very slowly...
Update 06:41 CST: 25% transfered. This is also stupidly slow.
I think it may be better than the first, but not a long term solution.
Update 07:30 CST: 30% transfered. Frak it! I'm buying a physical server.
Update 07:44 CST: Physical server on order with the planet.
Dual core, 4GB ram, 2x250GB disks, and for less than this VM.
I'm told it usually takes about a day to set that up. In the
meantime, I'll try to get us limping along on the VM.
Update 07:50 CST: Email is likely going down soon, and we'll switch
to partial service on the new system, with websites coming up as they're
transfered. Email will be the last to come back on last, to avoid
any lost messages.

Right. As far as I know, the status message is only displayed if you view the main page, i.e. the root of the website. Trying to retrieve other pages will just result in a 'file not found' error.
I'm getting the same message Tapewolf is getting; using Firefox with DSL through Qwest. I like the information I'm getting about it a lot better than some random 404 error message. ^^
Ditto here, but I'm using Time Warner.
Not to derail the topic or anything, but...
QuoteDual core, 4GB ram, 2x250GB disks
Forgive my lack of knowledge on web hosting, but... Is that it?! Is
that powerful enough to be a server? It seems kinda... Low end by my standards... (Heck, I've seen gaming rigs with more processing power. Then again, gaming kinda
uses all that processing power and then some...)

Well, I'm no expert but I think you'll find that xephernet is spending most of its time on disk I/O, caching and network, so the CPU is probably not your bottleneck.
Also it's probably a rack-mounted system with some kind of SCSI array, which tends to add an extra zero onto the price tag.
Well, it also depends on the speed of that dual core CPU.
And rack mounted system with some kind of SCSI array? What about with something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402) Well, at least having a bunch of HDDs attached to it, anyway... (Seriously, I'm curious. I might want to branch out into this.)

If it's a typical 1U rack, the whole thing - motherboard, CPU, power supply etc. - has to fit into a space slightly less than 40mm high.
However, looking at what The Planet do, it looks more like he's renting one of their existing machines (which again, is probably either a 1U or 2U rack).
https://www.theplanet.com/servers/Default.aspx ...it's probably one of these packages with an extra upgrade or something like that. As for what they actually look like, they don't seem to be saying.

Update 12:45 CST: Failure! System wouldn't boot. I've ordered KVM so
I'll have full console access. Soon as they get that setup, should be
about 60 minutes work still, then syncing. I did manage to sync about
20% of the user data in advance (before I crashed it) and it goes
REALLY fast, so that's good.

Still not there, but almost, it seems.
I wouldn't be surprised to find they use either IBM or Intel Blade servers.
Darn things are bloody near indestructible once they are configured properly. :)
I haven't been able to get on for 2 days, and now the server's down? DAMN YOU INTERNETZ, WORK!!! :crying

I am now getting a yahoo search result from using my book mark for DMFA. It tells me there are 19,800 search results for www.missmab.com, but did not bring up the web site, nor the progress report I was previously getting. :(

It just means the DNS entry is probably no longer valid for Xepher.net controlled domain names, missmab.com and the like.
DNS entries take awhile to circulate so if they have been down long enough with absolutely no updates, the web-page literally disappears from the internet.
But fear not, I would suspect it to be restored soon. Though it may take a little bit for the new entries to recirculate to the DNS server you connect to.
More information on DNS for those inquiring minds out there. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System)

It depends on where the error is, really...
If the failure is that the DNS contains no records for the requested server, then your ISP can return a record for their search engine/add server, which will recieve the URL you used and tailor ads to that. If they are doing their job properly, they return an error that the specified domain or server cannot be resolved for.
If the failure is with your connection to a server, then you ether can't reach DNS or can't reach the requested server, and Firefox times out and returns an error.
And, of course, there is the well known 404 when the page you request does not exist on the server (and a few other error messages that can be returned from the remote server if you are able to reach it, assuming they are not set up to redirect you to a custom error page)
