Title: A music recommendation
Post by: Azlan on July 20, 2006, 09:00:41 PM
Tastes most definitely vary, but for those who appreciate metal, I recommend you check out  Black Stone Cherry (http://www.blackstonecherry.com/) .

Kentucky, who would have thought?

Not bad at all. The vocalist is interesting, which is always a good thing, and could help them in the long term. They seem to be able to play as well.

Indeed, the ability to play is a lost art... it died at the beginning of the 90's...

I also recommend Black Label Society (http://www.zakkwylde.com/).

I just bought Red by King Crimson today, in a narrow decision over Discipline. Starless is a wonderful track.

A good choice, but I can see how that might be a close decision.  Ah, so much music and so little money...

I was searching for that forever. My local music place stocks lots of Crimson, but not Red for some reason (Or for that matter, Court). I'll probaly get Lark's next, unless I get some Mahavishnu Orchestra first.

Red, is it?  I first got hold of Starless via Napster, to hear the 'tron introduction.  Unfortunately the person who uploaded it called it 'Starless and Bible Black'.  So I went out and got that album.  It was shit* and didn't have Starless.

My anti-walkthrough for the Ultima game 'Serpent Isle' is called 'Starless and Bible Black' in honour of the song which does not share that title.

*'Fracture' was good, and one or two other tracks.  I liked the ending on one of them where they run out of tape and you can hear it coming away from the heads, but it was still a waste of money IMHO

*EDIT*
Bill, I hope you aren't implying that you haven't got 'Court of the Crimson King' ;)

The main singer in Black Stone Cherry reminds me of the singer for Pearl Jam. In other words, pretty good.

A few I've found are DragonForce, Dark Moor, and Vanishing Point. I don't know what it means, but DragonForce is classified as Speed Power Metal, Dark Moor as Classic Symphonic, and Vanishing Point as Symphonic or something. They're all great, but I think I like Vanishing Point most of the three. :januscat

I really should go out and get some more KMFDM. WWIII was a wonderful album.

... and more Garbage, and probably see about some Dave Brubeck, and Concord Dawn, and Fat Freddy's Drop, and the Run Lola Run soundtrack, and Pitch Black, and...

... what? :-)

A friend of mine gave me a copy of Court, in dreadful quality. Not bad, though Moonchild is something to forget. Anyway, bought Larks' today. Easy Money is a wonderful track, as are the two parts of the title track. I was going to get Brave by Marillion, but they didn't have it.

By the way, to make an actual recommendation, I uh, recommend Echoes by Pink Floyd. No, kids, Comfortably Numb isn't the best PF song  :evar . They never made anything like this again, though Animals and WYWH came close.

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can

And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks and no one tries
And no one flies around the sun

Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Lyrics don't tell the tale, though. Get this. It's on the underrated "Meddle" album.

Bal Sagoth, my man.  Six albums of.. stuff.  I call it 'fantasy-metal' because most of it is set in this weird universe they've invented.
Most of the time they don't sing, they narrate over the songs, it's really weird.

My favourite album is their second one, with the stupendously long titles.  It's called "Starfire Burning upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima-Thule".  The title-track reminds me of the game Serpent Isle, wandering around in the freezing snow, trying to invoke strange rituals in ancient ice-bound temples.
Probably my favourite track on that one is "As the Vortex Illumines the Crystalline Walls of Kor-Avul-Thaa" which has a fantastic keyboard orchestration bit in the middle - and lyrically it's like the Banes ritual in Serpent Isle as well :)

http://nice.purrsia.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=79;t=002600;p=1#000020

Their current album is 'The Chthonic Chronicles' which is pretty good stuff.

*EDIT* Fixed spelling of the sixth album.

Now listening: Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime

Argubly the first prog-metal album ever. Sounds a tad dated now, but Geoff Tate is the best metal vocalist I've EVER heard. Just listen to The Mission, for God's sake. (Use the player here: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=3564)

QuoteThey'll say
My mission saved the world
And I stood proud
My mission changed the world

I recommend Radiohead. Good band.
I don't know what they're up to nowadays.  Like many people I lost interest when 'Kid A' came out. 'Lucky' is among my favourite songs though.

The other day I heard "Pantagruel's Nativity" by Gentle Giant for the first time.  I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like it before.  Ignore the first 30 seconds though.

Threshold have done some quite interesting prog-metal.  'Into the Light' on Psychedelicatessen has some nice moments, particularly the weird reprise at the end where the signal breaks up.  Critical Mass has some very good songs on it as well.

I have Pink Floyd's whole collection, and love each and every song. True The Final Cut has alot of weak songs, but I can get into them.

I also like everything Radiohead has done. Hail to the Thief is an awsome album.

Incubus is okay.

It has its merits.  It starts with the end of 'Lilywhite Lilith', which I think is the best part of that track.  'Waiting Room' also picks up at around 3 minutes.. but yeah, most of it is trash.  Somewhat like 'Moonchild' on Court of the C.K.

S&G also have one of the scariest songs I've ever heard. 7:00 News/Silent Night. Amazing.

This is the early evening edition of the news.
The recent fight in the House of Representatives was over the open housing
section of the Civil Rights Bill.
Brought traditional enemies together but it left the defenders of the
measure without the votes of their strongest supporters.
President Johnson originally proposed an outright ban covering discrimination
by everyone for every type of housing but it had no chance from the start
and everyone in Congress knew it.
A compromise was painfully worked out in the House Judiciary Committee.
In Los Angeles today comedian Lenny Bruce died of what was believed to be an
overdoes of narcotics.
Bruce was 42 years old.
Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for an open
housing march Sunday into the Chicago suburb of Cicero.
Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march and the
police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out
if it is held.
King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago Tuesday.
In Chicago Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was brought
before a grand jury today for indictment.
The nurses were found stabbed an strangled in their Chicago apartment.
In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a special subcommittee of the
House Committee on Un-American activities continued its probe into anti-
Viet nam war protests.
Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting
anti-war slogans.
Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial
increase in the present war effort in Viet nam, the U.S. should look forward
to five more years of war.
In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York,
Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single
weapon working against the U.S.
That's the 7 o'clock edition of the news,
Goodnight.

Just burnt some of my favorite vocal preformances of all time on a CD. Included:

Claire Torry - Great Gig in the Sky  (No comment)
Roger Daltrey - Love Reign O'er Me  (Likewise)
Geoff Tate - The Mission  (Amazing stuff on the end of the second verse. Tate was great at slipping in and out of falsetto quickly, see "Revolution Calling")
Jim Morrison - When the Music's Over (Always been a fan of Jim's voice)
Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
Mick Jagger - Sympathy For The Devil (Best RS song  :evar . Perfect lyrics for Mick's voice; full of swagger.)
Ian Gillan - Child In Time

Chosen with the help of the great DigitalDreamDoor.com lists.

Did this track make it onto the album?  If so, I'm getting it.
I'm not sure why they felt the need to lock two A827s together to record it, though - it's fairly sparse, so one would have been quite sufficient. (Assuming it isn't just a video effect like the annoying stick man.)

To be honest, I never considered this Genesis' best album, giving that honor to Lamb. This is a wonderful album though, with only one easly skippable weak spot. Best tracks include Dancing With the Moonlight Knight, The Battle of Epping Forest, and The Cinema Show.

For some reason I never liked much of any music I know is from the 60's. The only stuff I know from before then are really old classical things I don't like.

Some other people/groups I didn't think to make note of before would be:
Yanni (classical/orchestral/new age)
Greg Tuby (same as above but more soothing)

My musical tastes skip around a lot. Mostly, I don't proclaim loyalty to single bands, but I just like single songs, some from almost every genre.

Purchasing Today:
Permanent Waves
A Farewell to Kings
..the latter of which was taped at Rockfield (http://www.rockfieldstudios.com) in Monmouth.  I'm not even going to bother asking how much their sessions are.  Maybe if I get rich..

Now.  Permanent Waves I wasn't overly impressed with.  The first side is okay, and Jacob's Ladder the highlight of the album as far as I'm concerned.  They did a cool live version of Natural Science on the Rio DVD, with a bizarre display of mitosis and elementary particles projected on the screens.

Farewell to Kings is okay.  It's highlight is Xanadu.  The others aren't bad, but I'd heard most of them before so my expectations were a little coloured.  Cygnus X-1, oh, I like the start with that weird echo trick and the ending where he enters the Hole.

My favourite version of Xanadu is the live one on Exit Stage Left as it has a more sensible arrangement on the minimoog.  It doesn't have the sparrows though.
(They did a short version in Manchester 2004.  Practically the entire audience stood up and joined in with the word 'Xanaduuuuuuu.........')

Would you believe that none of the music stores in my area had Farewell To Kings?  :<

I'm really liking PW right now; On some Rush sites, saying that Moving Pictures isn't their best album is a shooting offense. Which is rather odd, since I never got what was so good about Moving Pictures. 2112 and Hemispheres were much better, IMO.

QuoteHILTON'S TEARS OVER HER OWN ALBUM
From World Entertainment News Network
August 22, 2006 7:16 AM EDT

Aspiring pop star PARIS HILTON is so thrilled with her debut album PARIS, she cries with joy whenever she hears it.

The hotel heiress insists her disc is truly great, and can't believe it has been embraced on the club circuit.

But she knows clubbers will only dance to her tracks if they don't realise it is her.

Hilton says, "I, like, cry, when I listen to it, it's so good.

"People love it. Everyone's like, 'Who is this?' I don't tell. Because I don't want someone putting their phone up and recording it and making a ring tone off of it.

"I think when people don't know it's me, they won't judge it. But if they know it's me, then they'll be like, 'Ugh.' They won't even dance." (ZJS/WNWCYA/GES)

Why are some people allowed to make music?

Oh, my god.

Ohhhhh dear.

Now I need a new computer screen.

On a random note, I just listened to INXS's album 'Switch.' I like it a lot, even though I have no clue who the heck INXS is.  'Afterglow' is good... so are 'Hungry' and 'Devil's Party.' Really, the whole thing rocks. The use of the saxaphone was kind of unexpected, but definitely cool sounding.

INXS started 30 years ago.

Of course, the 80's were their time and Michael Hutchence (lead singer) killed himself a decade ago so they've been pretty quiet until their recent stint at reality television (where they got their new lead singer).

But at least INXS is still INXS... unlike some other old bands with only one original member.

Yes, I'm in a Rush impulse purchase mood. Heard Counterparts was by far their best 1990's album, though. And, I've been planning to get AFTK for a while.

For those who like Melodic Metal, try looking up Impellitteri (http://www.rapture.net/impellitteri/) Chris is considered one of, if not the, fastest Shred Style guitar players in the world.

Former Impellitteri Vocalist, Rob Rock (http://www.robrock.com/), went solo a few years back. His latest offerings lack the insane guitar speed that Chris Impellitteri used to back him with, but the vocals are still in the realm of Boston or Bon Jovi.

A Farewell To Kings

I thought you'd already bought that one.

By the way, when you run out of Rush albums, try to get Singularity's first album - it's fairly similar to some of their 1980s output.  Some people call it 'the lost Rush album' :P

The only 1990s one I have is 'Roll the Bones', mostly on the strength of 'Dreamline' after I saw it live in Manchester.  Bought it the following morning in fact.  'Roll the Bones' itself has some charms too, and I like 'Neurotica'.  After that it gets a little patchy.  I guess I miss the analogue synths from the 70s and 80s.

The band 'Blue October' is making me pretty happy right now. Especially 'The Sound of Pulling Heaven Down.'
