Title: Which species from dmfa would you like to be?
Post by: silentassassin on July 22, 2008, 12:39:33 AM
I would personally be a mow.  :mowmeep Why, the same reason amber made this comic, pure insanity.

I don't know. People probably expect me to say Kangaroo Rat, so instead I'm going to say Cubi Kangaroo Rat. I'd love to be something that damn powerful and cute looking! I could even do Jyrras' henshin pose and still look cool pulling it off! And since I could shapeshift, I could become anything I wanted.

I need help. Someone get me help.

Wait, do you know something about the Insectis that we don't? (Wait... *slaps himself in the head* DUH!)

Going back to my first incarnation of my character, back before I picked a color scheme or a name, I woulda been a were, but I think I would be my current character(orange tabby feline), as a being.

I kind of revealed my logic for my choice in my post up top: Jyrras looked totally badass as a Cubi. Plus, I wouldn't mind the ability to pull off fashion miracles like what they can do. The shapeshifting thing would honestly just be a bonus. And if I was a Cubi, I'd want to be the kind who could get a charge off of writing for someone or being an actor, mainly because - for all of my insanity - I really am incapable of hurting someone unless I'm pushed way too far.

IIRC the number of active 'Cubi forum members can be counted on both hands.  Though that still might be too many for some people...

Anyway, in my case, it's the whole 'eternal youth' deal that fascinates me.  Shapeshifting is cool, but being able to remain about 25 for centuries on end without having to eat or sleep is a very alluring vision.

Actually, they do have 'predators'.  Leaving aside their own infighting, there are Dragons and Beings out to get them.  And I think the reason they are practically an endangered species is because they don't breed like crazy...

For the curious, we ran a character poll in late 2006.  The results are here:
http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,1462.0.html
...in short, there were 52 respondents, yielding 8 'Cubi, 15 Beings and  a miscellaneous collection of others.

My first impulse would be say Cubi, for reasons already stated, but considering every man and his dog wants to be that (aren't they supposed to be rare?) I'll say 'Were' instead be a being when you want, turn into a different animal when you want and still have access to magic without the long lifespan (something that could be a burden if your friends aren't as long lived, think what Dan's going to have to go though) oh and you could freak people out by turning into a human.

I think it's fairly obvious.

But if I had to choose another for an alternate avatar, I'd go with Gryphon A, or possibly a Being or Demon. As for species, other than jackal, I... think a kangaroo, flying fox, or ring-tailed lemur. Or even a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.

Well, here's Boko (http://www.mabsland.com/Boko.html). She's from a side comic to the main DMFA comic, and it's canon status seems to be uncertain. She's a Nictarl, but I don't exactly know what a Nictarl is. Any help?

Fear the unnecessary double post... edit when possible.  But yeah, that's the one.  There doesn't seem to be any info on what a Nictarl is, but I've e-mailed Amber about it so I suspect that I'll get an answer someday.  You know..hopefully in a year or so.  She's busy and stressed though, so maybe 2 or 3.

Much like several of the "older" (I use the term loosely) forumites, I have had an incubus alter-ego for use in RPs and such. However, in these circumstances?

Fae.

For some reason, the thought of any character being able to do that fills me with fright. Are Fae actually able to do that? I mean, I know they can do some scary frightening stuff, but can they actually will people out of existence?

All of a sudden I had a vision of Jyrras obtaining this power, and slowing going into full mad scientist laugh...

A tough question. I wouldn't be a cubi. Not because they aren't awesome, or overly popular, but that given my luck, I wouldn't be something that awesome. I'd probably be a being. While that's also been used a lot, I'm kinda one of those people who isn't really strong, and may or may not be good at magic, if there was any in this reality. Given that, I'm left with my obsession with playing video games, and building things.

EDIT: I didn't post a animal the ebing me would be because, really, I wouldn't mind what I am.

They prefer the Retcon fae power, where they can delete anyone as long as they're not a main character. The paranoia and promotion fighting raised among the lower cast members is much more satisfying.
As for me, if we're going with applying real life traits to races, I'd end up an Angel with Cubi-ic(cubic?) soul stealing aspirations. I fully enjoy the idea of a race of chessmasters(some only rising to Smug Snake status, but those can become politicians).

My understanding is that they are indeed able to do that.  It's probably just a spell which anyone who has the right skill and powers can cast.

I'd be a Fae of my current fursona (a white-and-golden tabby). Fae have:

Almost unlimited power...that I want.
Fanciful home realm...that I like.
Fun, and colorful, with still emotion....something I like.

So, Fae for the win. :3

Likewise, I see the cubi as having a lot of stuff built in from the start, but a good bit of it is stuff that other races can do if they're willing to work at it for a long time(minus the usual failings of trying to do it secondhand, of course).

To the topic maker: I suppose you mean race.  There are hundreds of species of critters in Furrae, and I doubt Mows are sentient.  :P

I prefer to be a Being, as my character is.  Not just because there are a lot of fan-made Creatures, but because the Creatures have all these powers they tend to look a lot more interesting to people.  I always wanted to, at least in an RP sense, prove that Beings can be powerful in their own ways other than just being far more numerous...if at least to add resourcefulness.

Of course it doesn't help if there are trollish players, but whatever.

Anyway.  If I HAD to choose a Creature race to be, it'd be dragon.  Ancient, reasonably powerful without going as overboard as the Fae or the Cubi, and still able to blend in if they have to.  And for some people who know me they probably thought it an obvious choice. xP

I'm perfectly content with being able to change from anthro-bipedal tiger to non-anthro-quadruped tiger.

Although I admit, I  thought about a cubi furson with some background - way back. - Back when it was the in thing for everyone to be cubi.

I can speak for myself, this is still true, mostly. I've been trying to develop a concept around Alex & Miranda that's separate from DMFA (which I'm not going to talk about now), but they still retain a lot of their original 'cubi magic & shapeshifting. Thinking about it, they're almost 'cubi in all but name, and for purposes of DMFA-universe, 'cubi it is.

(Honestly, I joined during the 'cubi fad too (if I remember correctly), but what did it for me was, oddly, the multiple wings.)

silentassassin's got a point, rocket_red1. You really can't have a half Cubi half anything (http://www.missmab.com/Demo/HG02.php), or at least according to what Amber's put up. What you'd end up with is a Panda Cubi, or at least once they hit adulthood. But it's the same thing, really.

Just because the Censor Pandas are skinny doesn't make all panda characters skinny.  They can be whatever they want.

I'd be a Warp-Aci.
Not a true choice available to me but it seems unique enough, and it's very similar to my letter avatar. (Yes my normal avatar is the inanimate object not just a name.)
Honestly you almost could consider them a race, being summoned from another dimension probably hurts that consideration though.
Much greater intelligence then any Mow but we aren't for sure on what happens when they "die". Fly on the wall abilities are always a great plus too. :)
I however would wind up being the sanest of them all and therefore an outcast, not an unfamiliar thing.

Also I'd get to teleport and drop your ass off into the nearest volcano if my master saw fit.  >:3

Eh probably not gonna happen,
Quote from: Demo 101Summoning forth a Warp-Aci is tricky work where the summoner must send out a beacon through a portal of dark mist into the magical realm they exist in. If the summoner is skilled or lucky enough, a curious Aci will respond and attempt to enter the dimension. Passing through the mist gives them their dark form which continues to radiate the etheral energy that actually contains their true nature.

The Warp-Aci have probably all realized that if you touch the rift you will disappear, so only the stories of those who come back could make them seek it, aside from mentioned curiosity.
I do my research and shall shoot down as many potential problems as early as possible.
Sorry to be a kill joy, it's my calling.
Also a snob ass sometimes, that's just fun.

I actually would not go with undead. If I were to be a being, then I'd seek the first Undead and bugger him to he bites me, but if I could have a choice? Demon. Long life, dark magic, get powerful enough you lose the need for food and sleep? Get very powerful and longer life, and a chance at nigh immortality? Oh yeah, I am so on that.

For those that actually choose Fae... you have no idea what it is like to live forever.  Everything mortal comes and goes, it becomes so much that you no longer care about anything... that is what it is like at first, but eventually you learn to play the game.

Plus, fae are unstable... cracked... because of the wild, dynamic nature of a force always in flux, magic.  So close to it means you become very much like it.

However, it is what I will always be!  So... who wants banana cream in the face.  *loads launcher... in orbit*

Maybe that's why Fae eventually choose death: at some point in millions of years, you're going to get tired of it all. That's actually a little depressing. Imagine poor Mab... knowing that Dan and Jyrras and Wildy and Aleksi and Lorenda and every last on of her friends is going to die within the next few thousand years, and there's really not that much she can do about it. I mean, I guess she could magically prolong their lives, but I think that eventually they'd have to ask her to stop doing it... I'm sorry, I'm actually tearing up a little bit... excuse me...

You know, that may be the best explanation I've heard for the Fae's problems so far. Of course, it's probably come up before and I wasn't here to see it. They're as chaotic as a down feather in a tornado. And if it makes you feel better about yourself, sure, I'll take a banana cream pie.

My personal theory: none of them have the attention span long enough to get that bad. Alternatively, Fae might simply catch others acting like that and be able to stop them, or a Fae might even choose to die when it realizes that it is getting to that point. On second thought, I really have no idea.

theoritically, fae all could have gone the way of the joker. just so long ago that nobody is left in who remembers it except for them. they probably didn't go joker in furrae, but remember that Rose said fae cross between different planes of existance and Furrae is just one of the ones they tend to pop into.

in theory, fae have been and done everything. good, bad, evil, naughty, morose, incoherant...like azlan said, everything is old hat to a fae.

and don't you wonder just a tiny bit if all their whimsy is just for the sake of their own amusement?

oh, and if i had to chose an animal species for my undead? white rabbit, as a tribute to Frank from Donnie Darko. and also Harvey, my Urban Dead character.

Mythos (not taur) with four arms, sharp broadsword blades for fingers and a plate armor hide tough enough to not easily be sliced through by said blades. Tail is a metal whip with blade canards. Bonus if my fur or carapace is an array of spearheads or daggers designed specifically for death by impalement. Bigger bonus if I can find someone to roll me down a hill into a densely populated city street.

Alright.

This thread is probably a bit shorter then the last time it was visited.  Discussion got a bit heated, and over the top.  People were extremely rude.  Other people were extremely distracted.

In order to preserve the actual discussion that was going on quite happily prior to that, I've split off the other thread, and moved it to the Mine.  Feel free to go read the fighting there.

Additionally, I noticed a few things.  I will also be posting a reminder in the rules thread, so that no one has an excuse for not seeing this.  Additionally, I suggest that members read over the rules one more time, to make sure they are up to date.  A few things to note:

    1) "Nitpicking" is highly discouraged in the DMFA forum.  It discourages people from
posting, and makes the posting atmosphere extremely negative.  When the mods
would rather clean the bathroom then read the forum, somethings off.

    2) Although we appreciate the sentiment, please do not correct other posters.  That's
what we're around for.  We have a fairly large moderation staff for a reason.  If you
feel you must do something, PM us here on the forum, IM us on AIM or Yahoo, use the
"report a post" function, etc.  Additionally, you can refrain from feeding the trolls.
That's really what they want, in the end.  If you ignore them, its no fun.

    3) I know people won't always get along, but do try to be civil guys.  This is the PG
section, and it should be treated as such.

That's all for now, enjoy your regularly scheduled thread.

Also, I'm giving a 48 hour ban to anyone who tries to start the discussion on humans or "cubi- good or evil" again.  If you have any questions, PM me.  I'm around this weekend.

But seriusly, thx for getting us back on topic, it was starting to irritate me.  Well, lets see if someone can find a race that hasn't been said yet...

Personally id like Fae or cubi, their vast abilities and lifespan give so many possibilities, though if it came down to it, id be happy as just a normal being.

Human.

Although seriously, if I were to be some species other than what I actually am, probably a Were. They don't go around parading who they are, but they're stronger than beings and have magic to boot. Shapeshifting is kind of a bonus, but that would kind of reveal what you are.

Animal species? Komodo dragon. Nothing like a stupidly giant lizard to chomp down on your enemies. :D

Much as I love cats, foxes, and lizards....it would seem as though I'd just be blending in with the crowd if I chose any of the three. I'd honestly love to be an Angel fennec or water dragon. Though..a ring-tailed lemur Cubi would be fun, too. I mean..really. STRIPED WINGIES!! o=

However, my Avatar/Fursona is, and will always be, a being.

Ahahahahahhah! You're kidding me, right? Like this type of question needs to be asked?
...
Waitaminute... Wrong place. People don't know (or possibly care) about me. I guess it does have to be asked in case I haven't made it obvious already.

Dragon.

Yep. There it is. And especially in the case of DMFA. Due to these quotes from the Demonology page on dragons.

"57,822, Balorie is considered a very young dragon" - My kind of lifespan!
"The dragon race is likely one of the oldest and most powerful races in the land of Furrae." - Instant plus.
"Dragons are powerful, smart, and unfortunately in most cases, very aware of that fact." - Forget "unfortunately"
"Dragons have quite a few strengths. Powerful magic plus the ancient knowledge of how to wield it combined with their own bodies natural defense... a dragon could easily take on an army of beings and even a few creature forces if it so chose" - One word: Score!
"As far as physical weaknesses go, dragons have none" - Double Score! (albeit it goes further, but still)
"However due to their egos, most of them have a weakness against games and riddles." - You know me all too well!
"Also most dragons due to their age get eccentricities about collecting (or hoarding) certain items. If someone has an object a dragon desires, they almost always have a distinct advantage." - Like I couldn't just TAKE what I want?

Heck, if this counted half-breeds, I would push some Cubi into the mix. Just because I'm that big of a sucker for power.

Okay that would be intresting. But you'd probably have the cubi or dragon dna crush one ending with a dragon or cubi.

I thought Amber had established that Pyroduck is by far the exception and not the partial rule. After all, it seemed as though Abel's reaction to him without Pyroduck being identified by Fa'lina for him to not be all hate hate hate on. Of course at this point Abel still will hate Pyroduck, just more in the way Dan hates Abel.

Well, personally, I like the idea of being a Human-'Cubi. Why? Well, for one thing, you get shape-shifting capabilities and wings, which means that you can hide them, which would be useful to prevent people knowing you are a 'Cubi, as well as have a much easier time keeping them clean(I mean, feathers can't be easy to clean, and would probably get knocked out fairly often if you weren't careful).

Now, obviously, a Human-'Cubi would be able to take any form, but in base(human) form, the Human would have a much easier time swimming than a furry of the same size(I would imagine that once fur gets soaked, it would become a horrible drag), and flying would always be a plus.

Eating wise, as it is explained in the comic, a 'Cubi *can* eat, and younger ones do, but don't have to, which I would imagine a definite plus.

I would also imagine having a few extra tentacles morphable into extra limbs would be useful(extra hands for holding things, reaching up and using them to pull you up into trees or other hard to climb structures, and using them to cut things, just to name a few) - Yes, I realize that it would take extra concentration to do multiple things with the extra limbs, but for simple tasks like holding things, it wouldn't take much.

Passive mind reading would be definately handy, and active mind-reading would be something good to learn about, even if just to learn how to block other people from doing it to you. Dream-surfing would probably be fun, so that's a plus.

Now, sure, a 2000 year lifespan(without eating souls) might seem short, but its pretty long, realistically. Obviously, one might be able to figure a way of cheating and getting extra energy without eating souls(See: Tapewolf), which would increase that(Personally, I like the idea of being able to absorb 120V, 60-cycle electricity without having to use some special machine to convert it into another form, like Tapewolf figured).

I don't think I have forgotten anything; At midnight, my mind sort of wanders.
-----------------------
Related:
In the DMFA universe, I think a good occupation for a nicer 'Cubi would be as an Adventurer, like Dan - You run across all sorts of magic, travel and such, and people probably are going to be less likely to realize you are a 'Cubi as an Adventurer. Plus, if you do, you will have some training in the field, from your experience as an Adventurer

Quoted For Truth again. Plus I'm not too much of a fan of the Fae in general, even if they have some great story-related opportunities. I just hate how they use Furrae as their personal playground (at least, that's how I interpreted what Rose said when she said "Dragons and Fae are only there (in Furrae) because breaking it won't ruin the big picture") and their general invulnerability. Which is a good thing if you are a Fae, but my inner RPer twitches and shrivels up like an over-dried raisin at the idea.

I have loved the concept of Dragons since I was very small I even remember disliking the knights in the old stories because they would kill the Dragons.

Actually, Amber has mentioned that Fae souls don't work the same way as other race's souls.  (See here if you're interested (http://clockworkmansion.com/forum/index.php/topic,2720.msg113258.html#msg113258)).  In fact, I seem to recall her saying that some races don't even consider them to be alive (in the conventional sense) though I'm not sure I have a reference for that one.

Good lord my topic is still going! Also, so I don't get called out for not sticking to topic. Yes, a dryphon would be quite interesting.

Actually, I was pretty disappointed to hear that Gryphons apparently can't produce hybrid children with Dragons, because I do agree that a Dragon/Gryphon child would be amazingly awesome >:3

I envision a dragon with feathered wings, sort of like this...
For those who are fortunate enough not to know, that's Saphira from the movie version of Eragon. A dragon with feathers on its wings.

I can actually envision a Dragon/Gryphon hybrid... and I'm not good enough to draw it. Curses!

They put feathers on Saphira in the movie?!?

...I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering what else I've heard. I'm so glad I never watched it.

Love the books though. Getting started on the new one soon ;)

There's a new one? What's it called?

I mean, I read the first two, and frankly, while they're ok, they're nothing to write home about. I hate leaving a story half-finished, though.

Brisingr. Or something like that.

Literally half-finished... it is in four parts now, I think. I don't follow it, so I'm not sure. Let's see, off the top of my head: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Empire. I think that's it.

Hmmmmm I'm gonna change what I wanna be. I wanna be a warp aci. Sure I'll be a slave to a cubi but gravity will no longer mock me. I willbe able to accomplish my one goal in life, to eat pudding while floating.

I'd be a Koala! So, being. Unless you can be a cubi Koala... I'd definitely be that. Being able to haunt other's dreams and shape-shift... Just damn awsum.

It looks like 'Cubi can be anything that a Being can be.  For example, if you have a Being-Cubi pairing, if the child is born a 'Cubi, they will take the appearance of the Being.  A Koala 'Cubi would certainly be possible.  Even if it wasn't, for some strange reason, you could surely assume a Koala form if you so wished.

To be honest, dreamsurfing and to some extent shapeshifting are just cool bonuses where I'm concerned... the lifespan and the fact that eating and sleeping are optional is what I'd sign up for, if I could :3

But the pudding would still be affected by gravity, so you'd kind of end up on the ground anyway.

I WANNA BE A FAE.
Just because, I wanna know the secrets of the universe... >:

They're probably very disappointing.  That, and you don't get a real soul... I'd pass on it myself.

You kidding? Super-awesome magic powers, the ability to reshape the world around you, a practically infinite lifespan...

Though the lack of a real soul is kind of disappointing.

But think of the fun you could have! D:

To be honest, I think it's a little OTT.  A lot of the good things which I've done, in games, programming and life in general, happen because I run into limits - which gives me a drive to break or circumvent them.  If there are no limits, you don't have much in the way of goals.
I still think the 'Cubi skill/ability set is the one which gives you tremendous scope to play with, while still having enough limits in place to make things interesting.
Failing that, I'd probably make an interesting Demon.

I'm not really sure actually. I need to re-read everything to get a handle on all the races. But I'm one of those silly people who make up their own Mary-Sueish race and character. At least I'm honest xD Why are you all looking at me like that? Put that turkey baster down!! I don't taste like chicken, honest  :U

This is true, but the question as asked is "Which species would you like to be?".  Creating a minor character of that power level is one thing - making your own personal avatar that powerful is, IMHO quite different.  I wouldn't even want to RP as him, let alone be him.

Making him become that powerful was not a design decision I took lightly.  From a writing point of view, he needs an awful lot of quirks to prevent him from becoming an unstoppable Deus Ex Machina, and an awful lot of soul-searching and running the idea past other people took place before I committed myself to it, and occasionally I still regret doing it.

Nonetheless, Daryil is a rather amusing character, in a rather amazing storyline.
Not going to lie, even with YEARS of practice coming up with stories, plots, and other various things, I wouldn't be able to come up with something like that, ever.

Have you ever thought of writing a book?
-----
ONTOPIC: I'd probably end up crazy-awesome, like Daryil.
As a Fae, I know I'd use my powers to cheat at game shows. I'd probably end up a minor player in the grand scheme of things, but I'd enjoy life while it lasted. ^^

Besides, Their wings are awesome o-o

Not as such.  With the possible exception of the music, I've always been better at modifying existing ideas (often beyond recognition) than creating my own from scratch.
