So, uh, what is a Furry? I've been here a month and a half or so and I have no clue as to what one of these is, much less what being one entails. Is it a guy who refuses to shave? A girl who refuses to shave?
As with pretty much every other topic I've created, I have no idea where this is supposed to go, so mods, if you move it, my feelings won't be hurt.
But can someone answer this nagging question? *looks hopeful*
Well, i think its an animal that has human characteristic (Talking, bipedal, clothing) while retaining animal characteristics as well (muzzle, fur, tail). Thats what i figure it to be.
actually thats an 'anthro', as in 'anthropomorphic'. this basically means any combination of human and animal, regardless of the proportion. for instance buggs bunny is an anthro, so is the egyptian god osiris, the big bad wolf, and anime catgirls
a 'furry' is usually a derogatory term, used for 'those kinds' of anthros.... you know the ones

I hated that CSI episode.
I, myself, generally consider a furry to be anyone who's into the fur/anthro culture that has a fursona of some sort themselves.
this is probably one of the only threads on this forum thats furr free, i am impressed
I don't think there's a set definition - the line that dictates whether someone is a furry or not is very thin, from what I've seen. However, Urban Dictionary has some good definitions, believe it, or not:
Quote from: UrbanDictionary.com
There is no one single definition of what a furry is. Even within the furry fandom, people cannot always agree on just what makes a person a furry or not.
Some would argue that to be a furry, you must think and talk like one (i.e. use furry specific words and phrases). Even if you go to conventions, wear a fursuit, draw the art, writes the stories etc but don't talk using furry lingo, you're not a furry. Basically, someone that may walk the walk but doesn't talk the talk.
Others would argue that even liking anthropomorphic creatures makes you a furry. You may have no idea the furry fandom exists or have ever heard of a furry convention, let alone any of the websites; simply liking 'anthro' critters makes you a furry.
The way I see it, if or if you don't consider yourself a furry is a matter of personal opinion.
As with any hobby, most furries are normal people just like anyone you'll meet at work/school or going to/from work/school or anywhere. Then there is the small percent that are hard core fans and have taken what for most is a hobby and perverted it (sometimes in an all to literal sense).
As is with so many other things in life, the few that take it too far tend to be the loudest. The silent majority are often forced into silence by the loud majority for fear that people will label them as being in the same class as the minority that have perverted it.
One unfortunate side effect of the internet and the relative anonymity that some sites grant their users is people are able to engage in activities (even if only on a virtual level) that they would never even consider doing in real life. An example of this is trolls of message boards that say things to people they'd never say to them in person. I think a lot of the stereotypes associated with furries are because of this.
In conclusion, as with any hobby, there are some furries that have taken it too far and/or perverted what for many is a fun harmless hobby.
Well I think Haz's answer pretty much wraps up this whole convo.

Haz has found a good - if lengthy - definition, but here's my attempt to give a simple overview.
Basically it can refer to a person or a fictional character.
A furry character would be someone like Dan from the DMFA strip - part man, part animal. Like a werewolf, or the Khajiit race in Morrowind, Oblivion etc.
'Furry' as applied to a person refers to someone who thinks furry characters are a really neat idea. In the media, it usually refers to people who takes this to, shall we say, extremes.

Bloody CSI...
Something I've been wondering about just came back to mind.
I'm fairly new to the furry fandom, started into it with Second Life a little over a year ago. In SL there are all kinds of retards who show up in the furry sims spouting off about 'fur fags' and such and being general douch bags. Did this large amount of hatred for furries exist before the CSI episode? Before CSI I hadn't really heard much about furries other then traces here and there of what seemed to me to just be some thing I wasn't into and didn't bother learning about or looking into (Kinda like Germany, never been there and don't know much about it other then a few things from conversations and the news)
Basically if I didn't know much about furries before the CSI ep I'm wondering if the CSI ep is what caused the 'pandemic' of furry hatred to escalate to higher levels then it had been (I'm assuming there was still a small group of 'blaaaahh fur fag) idiots out there before hand)

Outer Fortress it is.

Fursona. That's a word I hate. Why, dear lords, do people feel the need to state, in the word, that it's a furry persona. Is that any different from taking a persona? Does being a furry make it any differnt from being a drow, as an example?
Grah.

personally, I've always thought that furries are perfectly normal, and don't understand why people are so weirded out by them.
But then, I also always thought that running hither and thither, and climbing anything vertical was perfectly normal, and can't understand why people are so weirded out when I do those constantly, either.

There's the Vanity Fair article, the various spot news stories (sensatinalist covering the latest 'fetish' as opposed to objective stories... but what else should you accept from the media? They show what people want to hear.)
There are a lot of points in popular media that combine to a pretty big negative image, and fewer points of the more normal stuff.
As we covered in my critical thinking class, it's the media paradox: the rarer the event, the more it's covered. The more something is covered(and mroe emotionally engaging), the more common people think it is.
In my experience, furries are pretty weird and some are as bad as the media makes them out to be. If you want to think otherwise, and believe that they are taking facts "to the extremes", then you're only fooling yourself.
I know a lot of awesome people in the furry fandom, most of them are pretty normal and draw clean art. But, honestly, despite whatever it is you want to tell yourself, the furry fandom is a sex driven fandom. I've run into the weirdest fetishes that I've only found in the furry fandom. And I've run into several creepy people at cons.
Furry is weird.
And yes, a lot of them are THAT bad.
I find the fandom in general to be a lot like high school was. You gotta find your own group and stick to them. Unfortunately, this causes quite a few outcasts, as it were.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that. I have quite a few friends on SL that are awesome and indeed normal. Then there are those random weirdos whom I see running around the sim nude with rediculously oversized realistic penises that flop about and even 'drip' *shudders*
Not to mention just about 90% of the furry population there seems to be gay for some reason. I'm one of about 7 male furs on SL that I know are straight or atleast bi, the rest all seem to be flamboyantly homosexual.

... you mean you didn't know?
That's ok, baby. We'll shatter your world some more later.
I can't believe it didn't occur to me that they might exist in real life as well as SL. They're kinda horrible in SL but atleast most of them actually look like children there, in real life I can't imagine how horrifying that must be. I keep visualizing man fae with a lion's head and diaper :<
Now normally I'm not one to judge any group based on their actions and such. I mean I have gay friends (even went to a gay bar for one of their birthday parties, fun story), fur friends (SL, here take your pick. Even thinking about hitting anthrocon someday), friends that are way too into bondage (Don't ask), you name it. But honestly... WHAT THE FLYING FUCK IS WRONG WITH THOSE FREAKS?!?!? There's a freaking limit between weirdo and seek psycological assistance. In my opinion THAT is that limit. Arrrrgh!
There have been quite a few horror stories about baby furs. Whereas I usually don't care what people are into, as long as they keep it to themselves, a lot of furries(with all fetishes, not just baby furs) tend to like to shove it into your face.
Cons can be especially bad, because now they're surrounded by people who encourage their behavior. Which, in itself, is pretty depressing.

Actually, it'd be pretty easy to become mainstream these days with furry. All you have to do is declare it a lifestyle choice, while donating money to the ACLU. Then, get a bunch of the 'GOD HATES FAGS' people to protest you and then you'll suddenly find yourself with a powerful lobbying group composed of Moveon.org-ers (and Mumia supporters by default) which will declare that anyone who objects to your lifestyle is biased and a Nazi.
Then Islam will declare jihad against furry and the world will be destroyed in the resulting battle.
At least, that's my plan. >:3
Oh... and vore is the best! :mwaha
I've been in a lot of assorted SciFi / Fantasy fandoms, including things like Star Trek, SAG (Medieval recreationists) and various comics and animation groups, and I've gone to a LOT of cons. I've been going to furry cons for the last six years, from Tacoma, Washington to Philadelphia and in between, and I feel that I have to say something: Of all the con-goers, the furries are the MOST NORMAL.
I think what it is, is the fact that - compared to fans of anime, or Star Trek - furries aren't obsessed by just one franchise or creation. Plus, the actually tend to CREATE a lot of their own art, which means they have more of an active brain. Yes there are a few weird ones, but I'd put it at less than 1% (still means like 20 of them at AC, I guess). But at the slightest hint of a problem,of any kind, there will be a bunch of people coming to rescue you. And yes, for some reason, there's a higher proportion of gay and bi types. But there is definitely a very high number of friendly, likeable people at furry cons. And if, like me, you're not gay, you'll notice there are a lot more females than in other fandoms.
A few people wear suits, but they stand out - they're like team mascots or amusement park characters. It's maybe 5% max. They may be fans of DMFA, or Jack or The End of Things or whatever, but they dress and act like anybody else. Something happens when you meet someone who is a fan of the same comics you are - it's like meeting an instant friend - like you've known them all your life.
I'd recommend going to a con to anyone. I've never had so much fun in my life.
But there are still babyfurs.
Now, if we could somehow kill them and get away with it...
Hmm... biology could help there... a little sprinkling of MRSA...
*Charles is hauled off to jail for terroristic threats*
No one told me the babyfurs already had a lifestyle lobby! :<
Since the clockwork mansion is the first (and so far, only) place I've encountered a furry community, I have to ask another foolish question; what is a baby fur? That a term I haven't come across yet.

I've had fun at cons, and have met a bunch of awesome people. But I've also run into quite a few people that were less than enjoyable.
Okay upon looking at Zina's link I'd like to semi revise my earlier statement. Diaper furs are freaks! I didn't know the individual name for them. I've met a couple people around SL who played younger avatars but they act normally. The diaper furs are the ones that horrify the shit out of me. I ran into one that had a realistic diaper that they 'did their business in' and had all this coloured gas and leaking 'liquid' when they apparently went to long without changing. Add to this that they were wearing leather bondage gear and, well you get the idea :erk
If that's the kind of stuff the ones in real life do then oh my freaking gawd!!!
Babyfurs are to furries what furries are to the rest of the internet.
As to the general question of what is a fur, I've always thought of the concept as humans who happen to be other species, and are not allegorical.
Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, & al. act like humans, but they're still fundamentally just talking animals who walk upright. Furries are not.
And Aesop's animals are allegories for human behavior, so they don't count, either.
But Bullwinkle does.

Haha, no, you're cool.
Of course, if you give half a glance at the sort of banner adds that come up when your popup blocker gets disabled(don't ask; the brain bleach, it does nothing), you might notice that... pretty much every fetish has a group of adherents outside of furries.(aside from the ones that specifically require furries, of course, though even then...)
That's not to say that the majority of adhenrents for any given fetish isn't necessarily primarily furry, just that not all of them are.
From some of the discussions I've read regarding furry and gay, there seems to be an inordinately large number of gays in the fandom because of two reasons:
1: The fandom is pretty accepting, somone who comes out as gay is or atleast feels 'safer' doing so to the furry commmunity than they are to the rest of society.
2: Both declaring yourself furry and admiting you're gay ahve a certain ammount of 'coming out' involved, and someone who's openly gay may be more likely to admit to being a furry.

It has come to my attention that Danny is infact a Dani, because there's no way in hell any male would ever tell a woman NOT to expose her chest.
Ahem... I for one would never tell a woman to expose her chest
You're gay.
Yes but you didn't specify straight males you said any male and for that I qualify
That was funnier than it probably should have been.

I could probably stretch this out by siting some of those 'Duuur gay men aren't real men duuuur' idiots, but I hate those people so it'd kill the joke, instead I'll simply kill the joke by way of making a needlessly long sentence about why I'm not going to continue the joke.

okay now your just being silly
*giggles*
*Bows* I try.
Furries are OK until they drop the dramabomb. Then, they become awesome and unintentionally hilarious.

I dunno... how can we be sure you're not actually XXy with a reciprocal translocation involving the SRY gene region. In that case you'd be mainly femael genetically with a lil bit of male hanging on the end of the other X! ;)
NOTE: That type of translocation is documented, but it always results in female-dominant hermaphroditism. :P

The quickest way to their heart is through the ribcage.
Stomach. The ribcage is fairly solidly constructed, and takes some effort to go through. Sliding up under it can usually be done with a bare hand, albeit you need strong hands...
A little evidence demonstrating one of my theories on vores, at least those who are 'preyish' types:
Vore mice? (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071213/ap_on_sc/japan_fearless_mouse)
These mutant mice would throw themselves to predators! So you see, vores are mutants. Unfortunately, it's not exactly a very useful sort of mutant ability... but great for self-initiating population control. :B

That reminds me, the Hilton is now hiring actors for the upcoming Star trek convention in august... It seems like it would be fun, and other than the shooting I heard about in 2005 I haven't really heard any other horror stories regarding the Star Trek conventions.
I have nothing against furs, furries, whatever. As long as they keep it private, s'all good. Yes, this point has been made before. Deal with it.
What, you mean so long as they don't tell you? :B

I'd like to know what you mean by keeping it private exactly. Do you mean know letting it be openly known that they're furry? Or just no random fursuiters humping outside the mall?

i think the point is more along the lines of not rubbing it in peoples faces
sure, your a furr, but you don't have to RP nonstop in ways that constantly remind people you have a tail, urinate on trees, and yiff with random lifeforms. unless you are on a... muck? is it really called a muck? that sounds wrong somehow
sure, your into vore, but you don't have to make every conversation into a meal. discussing it while its topical or while it is funny is encouraged however
sure, your into some other freaky fetish, most of us can quite happily have you as a friend and know you have that fetish so long as you dont make an ass out of yourself by bringing it up every five minutes. fetishists can have conversations about video games and movies just like the rest of us
*munch munch munch...*
Om nom nom nom...
*munch munch munch...*
Mmm! Pretzels!
*more vore conversation! The poor innocent pretzels! :<

Yeah but then you have to clean the dishes, wait till they dry, then get all the preparations for food, then actually cook the food. I dunno... I think the ribcage is much more effective.
*A nice, dignified dinner scene, the man and woman are sitting opposite a large table full of food*
