Title: [Costuming] Scythe Finished
Post by: thegayhare on October 26, 2007, 10:05:06 AM
Well I'm working on an AC costume

Just for fun I decided on the Death of Rats as a character
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnQh6QoRuBM

so I started working on my head

here are the steps I've taken so far

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/848853/

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/858332/

steps I haven't photographed yet include the fact that I've added the front incisors (I used the front of a dental floss package to make the teeth),  I've redone the lower jaw to look more antomicly rat,  I've added all the reinforcing rods, and I've mounted the eye LEDs.

I'm just trying to figure out what to make the whiskers out of.  I've got some Wires that might work but thats a last resort.  I want something with a little bounce.  I'm thinking of using weed whacker line

so what do you folks think

My first thought was optical fiber, actually (which is most likely similar to the weed whacker thing). They'd already have that pale/semi-transparent gig going on, and they might be rigid yet bouncy enough. No idea what the price point is or if it'd actually work, though. Like I said: first thought.

That aside, you've picked an interesting and ambitious project! I hope you succeed :)

yep thats the plan.  but I want to finish the frame completely before I start that.   Mainly it's the whiskers, inner eyes, and molars.

then it's paper mache and paint time

i would suggest pipe cleaners for the whiskers, they would be about the right stiff/bouncy level. the challenge is finding some long enough, but most craft stores should have them cheap in bulk

I disagree with the pipe cleaners, It would ruin the effect.

Use Fishing line.

AC is kind of strict about weapons and weaponlike things.  A foam scythe might be okay, but definitely not a real one...

I don't think omega was reffering to the Adams Family real scythe, as much as a prop scythe that can be piked up at Spencer's or the Halloween Store.

As I understand it they probably wouldn't like that either.

I actualy have a real farm scythe I'm going to grt a few pics of me posing with it

but no I'm not going to use foam since Rat and Death's scythes are suposed to glow blue and be so sharp you can see threw them I'm planing to make the blade out of a clear plastic with blue LEDs to make the blade glow

Oh yes indeed... infact it's a tad loose so I'm thinking of adding a bit more padding.
all of which is very odd since I actualy have a very large head.  But I tested every step of the way to make sure it all fits even with my glasses on

so am I actualy.  I'm suprised by how well the build is going since I didn't have any plans to go by

PS I'm hoping to have a few pics uploaded later of me wearing it tonight.  Even though it's just the frame so far it looks pretty good.

the only thing is I've hit a small snag since I can't realy go any further until I find something for the whiskers.  Tonight I'll be putting in the nasal cavity and molars. I can't add the final touches to the front of the raw since I'll need access to the snout for the whiskers.  I have one interesting Idea for how to anchor them though.

For the nasal cavity I was thinking of making a small felt sack that would be inside the muzzle right where the nose hole is,  so it'll be dark.  what ever whisker material I use I'm planing on anchoring it inside the nasal cavity and then threading it out threw the frame.

Fishing wire works great for whiskers, and you can usually  get the rolls inexpensively at various thickness  up to 1.5 mm from Wal-Mart
Title: Re: Costuming project
Post by: thegayhare on October 28, 2007, 04:58:54 PM
well I'm hitting wally world this wensday so I'll look into it.  I've got plenty of ling round the house but it's just to thin

hopefully the 1.5 mm would be think and stiff enough to give it a little bounce

I figure 6 whiskers should be enough 3 to a side,  any more would look a bit crowded

thats a bit to much,  I'm not sure if I could pull that off anyway since my hands will be in big latex gloves.  I guess I could do something I could bite to pull but I'm not sure how it would look.

sorry to do this to you folks I just need to blow off steam and If I do it here it won't get back to my sis

(rant mode)

Now all week I've been asking my sis if she would take a picture of me wearing the frame.

It would have taken all of five minutes but each time she says yes she will and then blows me off.

so I wanted to take 2 maybe 3 pics one of me wearing just the head and regular clothes  and one or two wearing the full reaper get up and the old farm scythe out side infront of the trees.  This morning at oh... 10 am I asked her some time later maybe around twilight  (it would look better then rather then in the bright sun shine) if she would be willing to take the picture.  thats all she had to do hold the camera.  So we are both doing housework all day.  So around 5 pm the sun has just started going down I gather everything together and go up to ask her.  "Do I have to do it right now?"  "no but soon I was hoping before it's too dark."

So then to help things along I go up to help her move the last of the heavy stuff she needs taken care of.  after 20 minutes heavy lifting on my end she says she needs to take a break so she makes her self a cup of tea while I wait patently. 45 minutes later it's pitch dark outside and she comes up to me and says "Oh by the way I'm ready to take that picture when ever you are."

Am I out of line for being a bit pissed off by this?  I mean I've been asking for 5 minutes of her time all week.  It's a little thing but it's the only thing I can't do by myself.

It's just so frustrating, trying to deal with her.  I've got to bribe her for the tinest little favor and then I'm lucky if it actualy gets done, and she acts like I'm nagging her to do the impossible.  But if she wants anything I'm expected (nd more often do) drop everything to help cause she's my sister...

gah

Next time she asks you for help, tell her "sure, just as soon as I get this done" and keep it up until after she wanted the task completed.

Make sure it's a task that she can't do by herself, that she wants done, and that you're not going to get too upset about her not getting finished.

Results may or may not include what you're after, but you can bet she'll be aware you're pissed.

anouther slight update.  on the tail this time.

also the mask has gotten a bit heavy after the paper mache applications. It sits much better now but it also presses onto my glasses it's not bad though

I'm hoping to start painting tomarrow

there has been a set back in the scythe department,  unfortunatly the material I had on han cracked and splintered as I cut it so it's no use.

how ever I found this stuff called freindly plastic It's plastic pellets that you can melt in hot water and they then become maliable so you can mold them or press them into a mold.  I figure I can get some make a scythe blade mold (I can even make a gap for the leds to sit) and have the perfect glowling scythe for the  death of rats

I've been debating that myself.  I figure my paint marker would do a good joband it might make it look better but I'm not sure.  I think I'll do a test up near the belt peice. it'll be under the robe anyway so it's the perfect place to test the looks

Cool!

.. I was thinking, if you get some fiber-optic threads, you could run then down the blade - leaving the end of the thread somewhere on the edge of the blade, and thereby making a point of light there...

That might impact on how clear the blade needs to be, no?

thats a good Idea llearch but the only problem I run into is I have no Idea where to find fiber optic threads on the cheap.  how ever I do still have plenty of that 50 pound test fishing line  I'm going to try a second test to see how well bundles of that would carry the light through the blade

I ran a new small scale test
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/889248/

the third image is a new test with half the block run threw with fishing line the other side has a plastic tube  the plastic tubbing give the best results and I'm hoping with a little tweeking and If I can find tubing that fits compleatly over the LED I should have a working plan for the scythe

sorry for the repeat postings

I've updated the tail

and I've started working on the scythe blade

thats the blade form I've put together
It looks messy but all the tape is on the outside so the hot glue will only contact the laminate which I can pull off as it solidifies.  You might notice a small box inside the form owards the but of the blade thats the box that will hold the embeded LEDs

well I got a 50 pack of glue sticks... and I'm still short on needed material

a new small scale test proves that the new glue(which is clearer in stick form) dries just as cloudy so I'll still need to run tubing threw the blade form.  I also think I can recycle the materials I used to make my small scale tests.  basicly I'll chop them up fine and add that to the molten glue as I work it.

Also I got two small fans (one styled after an Ipod, the other styled after a flip cell phone) the I fan will be worn under the robes I had to glue an arch of plastic canvas over the intake fan so the robes won't get caught in the suction.  I also cut the back off the flip fan I mounted that inside the mask with some velcro.  I tested it and the fan can barely be heard outside of the mask but it's quite loud inside

I'm thinking of changing my lighting scheme for the scythe.

since Christmas is coming up I had a thought. I figured I could find a sting of blue battery operated Christmas lights.

like these

http://www.littlebrightlights.com/site/1435548/product/AC-100B

this way I can embed a string with several lights along the blade to make a nice bright scythe with out the diffusing I'm having with the current set up.

the only problem is I've got to find a set of these lights.  I figure I might hit walmart to see if I can find a set cheap.  if all else fails I could order them but that could be pricey

what do you folks think?

I don't see why not.  the blad will be the consistancy of hard rubber, and it sure won't look real.  not all cloudy and glowing blue.

but anyway I plan on asking on there forums once I have something to show.

In scythe news I've found a good handle.  on one of my recent walks I spoted a young white bitvh.  now something had happened to this tree since about 3 feet up the trunk it suddenly bent at a 90 degree angle.  I checked and it was stil green under the bark so it wasn't dead, but it's trunk was twisted and cracked and it was being choked by creepers so I figured it would be soon.  Today I went down with a hacksaw and pruning shears.  It's currently about 8-9 feet long so I've got some trimming to do.

this part should be easy just got to peel off the bark, tri, down all the branches, and sand it nice and smooth

well mini update folks.

according to my talks with the Dorsi Irregulars Sgt. Steve I've learned I may be allowed to carry the scythe.  they say definitely for the fursuit parade, and I'll be able to have it on the con floor if I peace bond it some how.  I've already got plans in that area.  But final judgment will have to wait until after they see the final product.

anyway as I said last time I found a 9 foot length of tree trunk.

Today I took ten minutes with a jigsaw and trimmed it down
I cut it down to size and trimmed off the branch ends
(http://freemyimageadult.com/ims/pic.php?u=2458WhIyq&i=38659)

Then after about an hours worth of work with a knife I finally cleaned it down to the wood
(http://freemyimageadult.com/ims/pic.php?u=2458WhIyq&i=38658)

next steps are sanding it smooth and staining

I had to order the lights threw the mail so it cost me a bit. I wish I'd known the batter led strings were linkable before hand I'd have ordered two.  It would have looked much better.

but it still looks good

I'll tell you one thing though that hot glue is aptly named.  I pulled away from the mold to quick and a big gob of hot glue fell from the tip onto my thigh.  I almost screamed it hurt so much.  Instinctively I swated at it and smeared the scalding glue across my leg.

It was pretty bad

Slight update... with the use of a cranky and ancient power tool I was able to fit one more light into the blade

cheesy how?

Is it the faux leather. the blade shape or size?

the blade looks kind of clunky, the lighting is okay, but the shape of the blade seems damaged in someway. Again, I'm sure the picture doesn't do the scythe justice.

You should varnish it or something, the way the wood is light like that is kinda naff.

Hey TGH! Guess what!
I just bought blue, battery-operated lights at Dollarama on Saturday!
There's the confirmation. Too late perhaps, but confirmed.

Coolio on your finished product TGH, great work was put into it, I can tell. *(regardless of posted updates)
