Hey, Ma-Ti was a borderline Mind controller... in that old ep where Wheeler was thrown into the future, he saw Ma-Ti using his powers to make rich folks give alms to the poor. They just keep him as the weak one.

Kwame can bury you in a landslide, Wheeler can burn you to a crisp, Linka can blow you away, Gi can drown you... but Ma-Ti? Ma-Ti can get you raped to death by a White Rhinoceros.

Does anyone consider the side effects? They have Captain Planet flying through the air above the water, leaving a lovely big trail where the water flies up on either side of his path.

Except that, well, the wash from that is going to erode the sides of the river, have a deleterious effect on the local piscine population, and generally do nasty things to everything in sight.

Mai-Ti always worried me. I know he's become a joke in recent years, but as a child, I had a lovely illustrated book of science-type things. From putting two and two together, I soon grew a worried respect for Mai-Ti's power, because I was convinced that he had the ability to turn your circulatory system inside out without even so much as damaging your skin. That terrified me. I had nightmares about it.

I stopped eating Coco Pops when they ran a "Planeteer's Ring" free gift thing in case my sister got Heart and artery-pwned me.

So you worried about your internal organ's being inside out... But not about having your face melted? (Sorry, just couldn't resist :P.)

I was always most afraid of Wind. I thought that Linka's power could in fact transport you to another world, possibly inhabited by munchkins and wicked witches. I wonder where I got that idea...

Heart was always my fav ring. Being able to essentially communicate with all the animals and gather them onto your team was always a nice thought. Of course, they never did let him use his full potential in the show, just like Beast Boy from Teen Titans.

Besides, Sabretooth is just a reskinned clone of Wolverine.  All he needs is a few more snikts and bubs...and maybe the trademark goatee, and he'd be the evil twin.

That said, any evil twin with a well trimmed goatee can only be killed by being pushed into a vat of molten something. This is a universal truth and for that very purpose, I always keep a zippo handy in case I need to molt something. Yes. Molt. It's a new verb for us all to enjoy.

My Saturday morning cartoon knowledge is weak, but wasn't Captain Planet the one where the villains wanted to harm the planet for no apparent reason?  The evil guy would say something like, ``Our factory is dumping 100 gallons of toxic waste into the water every day.  I want to increase this amount to 1000 gallons!''

One can only imagine what the board of directors would say to something like that.  None of the Planeteers scare me.  What really scares me is the thought that someday, I'd meet one of those writers.

My recolections of the cartoon aren't that great, but I believe that they wanted to do things that were poluting because it was profitable, and they wanted to do it dirty because they were @******$ and wanted to bait the captain planet team.

*has strange desire to see legend of zelda ripoffs featuring the female lead... Linka's awakening and wind walker*

Generally speaking, the more poluting an outfit is, the more profitable in the short run, because nothing's being spent on controling or containing toxic waste.

*Has another random thought whereby the Ninja Turtles would never have been created if the cap had been in that world, because the ooze would have been cleaned up.*

Well, I specifically remember something that looked an awful lot like Captain Planet where the eco-villains didn't ever mention anything about profits or expenses.  A World Below Us has Sly Sludge zooming around in a pollution-powered submarine.  Really, now.

As you mention, that's only true in the short run, because a large portion of the industrial waste is actually quite useful if you reclaim it.

I think my brother and I got to watch half an episode of Captain Mullet: the pilot episode!

Our parents came down, watched for a minute, and said "OK, that's stupid.  Turn it off."

some fifteen years later, a friend of ours was talking about how he and my brother always wanted to watch Captain Planet when they were younger, and interjected "Though in retrospect, all that show did was breed tiny eco-terrorists."

He didn't last very long - only the one episode IIRC.

Okay now I feel GEEKY that I remember CP more than anyone else in the board.

There was an old ep that I liked... it was when Linka went home back to Russia and her brother died from drug abuse it felt weird to have a death in the show.

Loot N. Plunder, Duke Nukem and Doc Blight are the only ones who actually make sense in that show as villians...

And Unless Im mistaken Cap Pollution made a return bout during last season when the show was pretty much a parody of itself with the cheesy puns and all.

Don't feel bad, King. I still remember a lot of the show, just not enough to talk about it intelligently.  I don't have the kind of memory for that.

However, to make you feel less geeky, I will divulge that my brothers and I all made our own Captian Planet shirts and rings, and even owned all the action figures at one point (they probably still have them somewhere- they're packrats).  I was always Gi.

I'll hold up the memory of the alien guy-entity whose name I can't recall (he was touted as the antithesis of Gaia) who proceeded to tempt the Planeteers with alternate versions of their own powers, greatly enhanced. Everyone went for them except Ma-Ti, and they had these neat metal gauntlets.

Using their powers required adding "of CONQUEST!" to the end of the usual elemental shout. So Kwame was like "Earth... OF CONQUEST!"

Those powers were cool, damnit.

From a storyteling standpoint CP wasnt supposed to be that much of a parody when the series started... You can still hear a sense of belief of the characters in their world but by the "New" adventures Cap... well... they lost their heart. Especially Cap himself.

[geek]

CP is such a wasted character... the herald of the Earth Mother should not be defeated so arbitrarily. Many of the pollution that he is weak of are built of the elements from the Earth itself. Why should he be weakends by an Oil Spill when he can dig for it just fine on the ground? And dont get me started with Hitler's hate weakening cap.

[/geek]

And maybe its just me but is Verminuous Scum supposed to look like a Stereotypical bad Jewish Caricature? Or am I just looking at 4chan too much?

Yeah, if you've ever seen the Nazi propaganda film The Eternal Jew (there was a bit about it in the special features on the DVD for Fritz Lang's M--I don't make a habit of watching Nazi propaganda), Verminous Skumm looks very familiar.

Oh, that is fantasticly hilarious.  I'm trying to imagine any way to win a war in Europe by using nuclear weapons.  I suppose it might have helped them take Stalingrad, but I'm just remembering the fallout drift patterns from Chernobyl--any nuclear explosion anywhere west of the Urals would probably cause mass death everywhere in the German-occupied territories.

Well to be fair, Captain Planet was never all that hip to being realistic so much as making a highly opinionized point.

There was an episode where a guy intended to kill off all the elephants in Kenya for their ivory and had them in a big holding pen.

Though Captain Planet was the first cartoon to ever tackle the issue of AIDS. (That episode consisted of one of Wheelers basketball friends having AIDS from a blood transfusion and the Ratlike guy spreading hate-rumours to make everyone scared to even be around him cause they thought they'd get AIDS just by touching him)

Hey, Family Guy may have been late, but they tackled AIDS too!  *sings*  Youuuu've got the AIDS!   >:3  I thought I had AIDS when I was 6.  I watched the evening news, NOVA, National Geographic, and 60 Minutes too much to be healthy for a grade schooler... and was a serious hypochondriac.   :B

Suddenly I'm very tempted to see how bad the fanfiction for this can get...

EDIT:  :<

Oh it's there at www.fanfiction.net look up tv shows it's there you could go to the m rating there but hey that's up to you.

Anywho I saw some episodes of Capt Planet many years ago and I can't remember the episodes but I know this it ran on cable for a short time till they got wise and take it off.

I remember those action figures and the rings that goes with it with the words on it very cool.

I know for a fact that there is a vid game of it for the Nintendo system way back in the later eighties and early nineties if I recall.

By the time the show was canceled it was pretty much a dying dog that had to be put down.

which was a good thing considering the 90s had the habit of making things... EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEME!

Ah, now I remember why I think CP was such a pity...

Alan Moore's "Swamp Thing" pulled off what I was expecting out of the Earth avatar motiff.

NJ has its own version... The Toxic Crusader!   *note: It's not too far from reality, if you've seen some of the people we like to call 'Browns Mills Finest'.  Lots o' inbreedin.  :B

To this day I still find it bizzare they tried to make a childrens show based off one of the hyper gory, boob laden troma movies.

could we anytime soon expect a television series or movie based off of either Too Much Coffee Guy or Poison Elves- both of which are thoroughly disturbing compared to 'normal' comics and would probably translate interestingly considering the way they translated the above comic.
